Re: Hughes email down?

well...

I emailed tech support about it, but they'll probly reply via my hughes address, rather than the earthlink address I suggested they use, in which case, I won't receive their reply!

Look over my posting history, but I've not had problems with Direcway/Hughes since I repointed and grounded the "installer's" crappy job.

No troubles until now.

But, my contract is coming up soon! and perhaps I'll have an option with that Verizon fiber-optic plan by then!

Wouldn't it be nice.

I guess this points out that, indeed, all those who have proposed avoiding using hughes mail, are much wiser than I.

I guess I'll go back to my old address...

You are right. A valid criticism. Sorry to lean on Hughes a bit heavily, but despite their unwillingness to discuss anything openly they do take notice and respond to adverse criticism when it might affect their revenue.

The problem is not which mail ISP we are using (I don't use Hughes because of their past performance) but that all OUTGOING smtp mail is forced through their servers anyway, which means that regardless of how we receive it, when Hughes goes down for outgoing mail, so do we...

I never got through to anyone using chat. The system logged me out after 50 minutes.

I don't consider myself wiser than much of anyone (unless THEY prove that I am ) but I will say that my 11 email accounts (NONE at Hughes) which are checked every 10 minutes 24/7 are cranking along fine.

A .US domain registered at GoDaddy for $5.99/year and another $5 per YEAR to host the domain at E-Rice.net, even if one only uses the 5 email accounts that come with the hosting package, makes a lot of sense to me...

·HughesNet Satellit..

Bill,

I agree 100%.

I have only one hughes account because HN will not send me news/account informations to my extern account. But they seem to have problems to do that also to their own email accounts.

Never used it in 6 years for any thing else. HN mail is useless...

FWIW, and coincidentally, about half an hour ago I received an email from GoDaddy and they are running a special where one can register 2 .NET domains with them for $5/year each.

Being a domain junky, I just registered a couple more with them, opting for 2 years each for a total of $20 plus the standard 40-cent per domain ICAAN fee. Dunno what I will do with them, but good .COM and .NET domains are getting harder and harder to find. Country-guy.net and country-gal.net are MINE!

Standard disclaimer: No connection to GoDaddy other than as a frequent customer...

Some points that I will tack on to your post mainly because:

1. Your statement is completely untrue. You may be using Hughes SMTP server in your e-mail setup, but most of us with other e-mail accounts do not, and there is not one bit of trouble with bypassing Hughes completely.

2. A lot of us have recommended staying away, as much as possible, from any server that Hughes provides, because they are so inept at running servers.

3. Hughes e-mail servers are not run by Hughes, they are run by Tucows.

4. A number of Hughes e-mail users receive (subscribed) automatic e-mails that originate with my e-mail account. Here are a couple of examples of the sort of bounces I'm getting today:

Reporting-MTA: dns; n124.sc0.he.tucows.com
Received-from-MTA: dns; mail.arcatapet.com (63.161.122.34)
Arrival-Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 16:20:04 +0000

Final-Recipient: rfc822; xxxx@hughes.net
Action: Failed
Status: 4.4.7 (delivery time expired)
The bounce occurred within seconds of the send.

and

Remote MTA n168.sc0.cp.net: network error

- SMTP protocol diagnostic: 554 Transaction failed

Reporting-MTA: dns; n124.sc0.he.tucows.com
Received-from-MTA: dns; mail.arcatapet.com (63.161.122.34)
Arrival-Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 20:20:52 +0000

Final-Recipient: rfc822; xxxx@hughes.net
Action: Failed
Status: 5.3.0 (other or undefined mail system status)
Remote-MTA: dns; n168.sc0.cp.net
This last one was to someone with 4 e-mail accounts; 3 are working, only that one fails, according to the user. Of course it is her primary account that is failing.
