Actually, you only need to forward port 3389 in order to use Remote Desktop (or Terminal Service in Win2000). And you can also change the port number in XP. Microsoft has a knowledge base article about how to change port number.

Have you successfully got it working while only forwarding port 3389? I know when I tried it I couldn't get it to work. When I forwarded port 4908 is when it started working.

Yes, I have it working here with just 3389 to my desktop as well. I did have to apply the update to fix remote desktop failing to connect. It was very intermittent until I applied the update from the windowsupdate site.
