| reply to W4DRA Re: Evdo Tweaks and Tuning
DAVE: It looks like you have the EVDO card right in your computer, right? Mine is in an MBR Router and so my connections to my workstations come through their individual network adaptors. Would that change the DrTCP settings?
I've done a boat load of testing and can't seem to improve much over what I have, and it varies from unit to unit. Right now all units are set to 128480 and the rest of the settings are per suggestion of tweak testing. Also, since speed tests can vary greatly even from one to the next, it's not easy to see if you've made an improvement or not.
I was playing around with my panel antenna and pointed it to a tower further away but I'm getting a cleaner signal and data transfer rates have jumped from the 400-700 range to 700-1000. I think this newer tower has multiple T1 lines whereas the former one had but one T1. Just a guess based on performance. -- Franklin CDU680/Assent MBR400 combo, CAY1912 panel antenna, Millenicom, 4 XPPro stations, Mozilla everywhere. |

| reply to hitman_001 To those that travel alot and want to use a HA close to your location you can change the Primary address to 255.255.255.255 and it will locate the nearest HA to your location. Be sure if you do this to define an HA address for the Secondary HA, otherwise you will not be able to communicate if the nearest HA is not working. |

| reply to Black05Hemi HEMI: OK, I'll give that a try, but after a lot of tinkering with the RWIN, I keep coming back to 26280. I'll give it a try and do some speed tests and post the results as soon as I have a chance...this next week is going to be a busy MF for me.

1 edit | reply to Derfdog said by Derfdog :Would it be possible/good idea to set the Primary and secondary HA to different cities in the same areas or different areas? Do HAs act like DNS servers? IF the primary falls off the network then the secondary takes over? If that is the case then it might be better to point to different areas, so for example my primary would be Roachdale but my secondary might be Relay, MD. The reasoning for this is that if a primary goes out it might have a cascading effect on the surrounding area(s)and by pointing to a secondary HA that is in the opposite direction (but as close as possible)you'd still have connectivity. The answer to that question is YES. I have my franklin set up to use Atlanta's Area 7 Secondary (.77) as my primary, and Kansas City's Area ? Secondary (185.77) as my secondary. I've noticed each time I connect, it will occasionally sync to ATL, and occasionally sync to KC. Not sure what causes the variance, but it just picks one and runs with it.
So the answer is YES, it is possible to pick two different areas... I picked mine based on info I read over regarding the fastest HA's in the evdoforums thread. I figured I'd try one from each of the fastest ones reported, it yes, it works. Now as if its a good thing to do or not, only time will tell. Remind me in about a week and I'll let ya know if I'm still cookin with it. -- Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say. Who is Ron Paul? |

| reply to Derfdog That is an EXCELLENT question, one I've wondered about myself. I was thinking of setting one in KC and another in MD, since these two seem to be somewhat better than others. Then I noticed that the gateway address was in MD, even if both of my HA's were in KC, so I switched both of them to MD, but I'd like to know the real story.
Can anyone here shed some light on this? -- Franklin CDU/Assent MBR WBB combo, service through Millenicom, 3 XPPro stations, Mozilla everywhere. |

| reply to hitman_001 I set up both my Primary & Secondary HA addresses to Roachdale IN, and I am getting good response times. Reading through this topic and some of the topics in the Sprint forum about loosing connections got me to thinking (a dangerous thing in itself)... Would it be possible/good idea to set the Primary and secondary HA to different cities in the same areas or different areas? Do HAs act like DNS servers? IF the primary falls off the network then the secondary takes over? If that is the case then it might be better to point to different areas, so for example my primary would be Roachdale but my secondary might be Relay, MD. The reasoning for this is that if a primary goes out it might have a cascading effect on the surrounding area(s)and by pointing to a secondary HA that is in the opposite direction (but as close as possible)you'd still have connectivity. Got other questions too but that is enough for now. -- Sprint Novatel U727, Centerbur OH |

Here's my speedtest today. I'm located in Puerto Rico and my HA is KC. The KC HA seems to give me the best results. I suppose the higher ping time is due to the satellite uplink from PR to stateside, but the up/down speeds are quite acceptible.
BTW, my RWIN is 26280. I've tried all sorts of other values, including the 65535 value posted elsewhere, but the one I'm using seems to give the most consistently high results.
The main issue here is staying connected. I'm in the middle of two towers and I have 2, 3 sometimes even 4 active pilots. I'm waiting for 3G to send me a replacement pigtail for the broken one they sent, so I can hookup my panel antenna (CAY1912) and see if isolating to one tower cures the disconnect issue. -- Franklin CDU/Assent MBR WBB combo, service through Millenicom, 3 XPPro stations, Mozilla everywhere. |

| reply to hitman_001 I just wanted to add that changing the first HA value in the dialog box (not the primary or secondary) on a CDU-680, it will do nothing for you but deactivate your equipment. It caused me some frustration to get it working again, and also caused someone else to send their brick back to Millenicom. The OP might want to add some stress to their instructions - that folks should only change the primary or secondary HA. |

The latency really is killing me for online gaming. This last one is odd. Download speed is not that bad but the latency is just not usable. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am running vista 32 btw. I don't know where you are located but I'm on the East Coast of Virginia and my HA is San Jose, CA. I can change my speedtest server site and I don't see where it makes any difference.

| reply to hitman_001 Can someone here please provide the specifics on changing HA with the Sierra Aircard?
Another poster above MJWALFREDO asked this question and I don't see any answer to it yet. The original poster stated that his changes weren't being saved, and it was unclear as to which profile got changed and how. PLease, someone help on this? |

| reply to W4DRA On this end I am getting awful performance and have been getting inconsistent service for months. It just seems to drop off for no reason. Latency goes through the roof. Funny thing is I usually keep the device in the same location and for no reason the signal just seems to drop off. In the same location for days at a time I have signal in the mid 80s consistently then for several days at a time the signal drops off and is all over the place. I called support and they swapped out the device with no improvement.
Its almost as though the tower goes into a low power mode or something and the signal just drops off.
Today my latency is crazy high and I have changed my HA to where I usually get the best performance and then back to default with no improvement. I am using the usb sierra device and have tried using scm and through my topp global router same problem. Anyone have any ideas? I am using a wilson trucker omni with no cable extension.
This is kind of a pain. |

| reply to netwire I think they must have fixed the problem. Mine has been doing better for about a week now. But sometimes it times out on a test or webpage loading. I can deal with that though. I can't deal with speeds less that half advertised on up and downloads.
OH BTW, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all who read this...

| reply to hitman_001 Area 7 must have issues, becaue I changed my HA to Area 2 and I've had nothing but good speedtest since. With Area 7 I'd see down to 79kbps with a high of 400kbps average. Now I'm getting speeds like this constantly:
Download Speed: 1211 kbps (151.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 223 kbps (27.9 KB/sec transfer rate) -- Dell Inspiron 6000 (x1), Dell Inspiron 531s (x1), PowerBook TI 1GHz (x1), Emachine W3506 (x1), Home-made AMD 2600+ (x1) =+=+=+= Connected to the web via Sprint EV-DO Rev. A
