schlouf: As far as i know, keeping static ip won't be possible since it is using a different network. Like most of the service, when you change provider you get assigned a static or dynamic ip from your new provider pool. About cable modem, i think videotron is leasing their modem with their packages. With us you can own one for 75$ (Motorola). We always offer 10% of on all prepaid account and would be pleased to deal something with our longtime customers who would like to switch. Would someone signing up with your cable offering ever have to deal with the Videotron civil servants at all ?
Are IPs given to your customers part of a videotron pool, or are they your own ?
I would appreciate very much an explanation of how packets are routed , and whether the customer gets DHCP leases from the videotron servers or from your own DHCP server.
Also, is the modem provisioning done by you or by videotron, and do you have any say on the provisioning (filters etc) ?
Will you be allowed/able to activate modems that used to be with Videotron ? (eg: customer abandons Videotron's mess, keeps his modem, goes DSL, and then moves to you ?

| Re: Electronic Box now providing Cable Services hello jfmezei_
If you signup on Cable 7 Mbits with Electronic Box you don't have to deal with videotron at all unless there is a trouble ticket or for the initial installation.
IPs are part of our own pool.
I have to verify for the DHCP. I will get back to you.
Actually we are selling the Motorola modems. We have to activate them in batch so it is not like DSL that you can buy any modem and it is plug and play. It has to be configured in the CMTS of the node. We plan to offer different modem soon to give our customer a choice of quality modems.
Probably but i have to double check on this one.

So, if there is a problem, I call you and then have to call videotron ? At that stage, do we the customers deal with the entry level drones at Videotron ? Or do we get a boost to speak to some of the few folks who actually know how things work there ?
When you say you have to activate the modems in batch, if I were to give you the cable ethernet address of my modem, couldn't you activate it ?
If I would have to buy your modems, are those modems "videotron" modems you just resell, or do you get them directly from a distributor/motorola ? In other words, do you have any say on what features on the modem are enabled and disabled (notably, customer side access to modem config to check the modem's status, a facility that was disabled by Videotron on its modems when I was with them and which caused me so many headaches and hours wasted).

1 edit | Re: Electronic Box now providing Cable Services jfmezei_ thanks for the quick reply.
If there is a problems everything is done through Electronic Box support center. We are dealing directly with Videotron helpdesk with trouble tickets. You don't have to deal with the 'drones'.
When i say we activate in batch it means Videotron is restricting access to a limited list of devices. We need to send them the informations regarding our modems so they can allow them in their network to exchange data with the CMTS. If you were already a customer of videotron in the past and own a cable modem sold by videotron we might be able to reactivate it since it was pre-accepted before in their list. At this stage the whole process is pretty new to us and informations are not always clear with videotron.
What i am still waiting is informations regarding the ARRIS telecom voip cable modems. They are not part of our allowed list as a wholeseller but what happen if a customer already own one and want to switch. I am still unsure if this is your case.
We buy modems directly from authorized distributors but videotron is giving a list of allowed models that will work on their network. It means you will have access to unlocked models. Like i stated, it is not like DSL that you can buy any g.dmt modems and be ready to surf.

| > nyt: how can they update with locked firmware ?
When a cable modem is turned on, it requests its configuration. The configuration include amongst things, the allowed speeds, and various filters and many parameters that are "secure" (cannot be set by the customer) as part of the DOCSIS standard.
This, by itself, does not change he firmware of the modem, but does change its operating characteristics.
However, in the case of the cable modem I had/have, Videotron told me that they were perfectly capable of remotely upgrading its firmware without user knowing it or user intervention.
Whether Videotron would update firmware of modems used by non-videotron customers is another question. The fact that videotron is restricting which docsis modems it will allow is perhaps an indication that it does want to retain ability to upgrade firmware of any/all modems on its network.

Tell me something - you said in a previous post that if I keep my Arris multifunction modem, I would not be able to get service with you guys? A couple of questions for diskace - btw, it's really cool that you take the time to answer here and that might be a major plus in my ultimate choice:
- Are there any cable modems that are NOT compatible with EB? - How long will it take from the phone call and the service subscription to the line activation. Being a former Videotron user, will I just need to plug my modem in and that's it? My Videotron connection will be cut off on October 10, when shall I call you?

| Re: Electronic Box now providing Cable Services Hey mike, i hope it will help you make a decision in your ultimate choice
There is a list of compatible modem, not a list of NOT compatible modem. Rickkins posted most of the recent one that are compatible (docsis 2.0).
A transfer is taking about 48-72 hours. You can call tomorrow when you have time and place a delayed order for October 10th.
If you prefer, leave me your number in private message and i will call you back ASAP.

And if i go with your company do i have to sign a contract of 1 year like videotron ??? And im going to buy a motorola surfboard 5100 is it the the best for your internet ??? thanx for you answer.
Cordialement, DiskACE
