| reply to GreatPumpkin The above graphs show some slight packet loss in a couple plots. Can some one tell me how serious this is and if this is corrected in hardware or software (Win XP).
My connection was unusable at night before the ticket work was done. Now I can use the net again at night...yes!
How may have tried any online gaming at Prime Time??
Very good improvement fron a couple days ago. |

Charter seriously needs to work on their communication from Louisville to the local offices. |

| reply to GreatPumpkin I believe what was done has helped a lot. I logged ping return times from 7PM until just a moment ago and basically see no variation. No doubling of time around 9:30 as usual.
Based on Jerm's theory, which I admit roused my suspicions, I tested to speakeasy.net as well my co-lo. 90-92ms to Speakeasy and 34-39ms to the co-lo (which has a direct AT&T connection in Atlanta so short number of hops). So really, little to no variance it would appear.
If this holds for weeknights as well, good to go... |

4 edits | reply to GreatPumpkin Was not able to get on long at "Prime Time" but did a couple tracert to Yahoo and things looked and "felt" much better. I just went to a few websites and checked my mail and like I said...it "felt" much better.
I saw that the Kingsport was jumping around but average was a lot better. No modem recycles either or dropped connections.
Pitch--I am glad you got a hold of Tony also (thanks). Lets not leave IsdnWolf out either, nice of him to keep us informed and his help and work was much appreciated so (thanks). As the "Pumpkin" said in this thread, we are lucky to have Wolf on the job here in East Tennessee.
I will do more testing (and post pingplotter), but first impressions are good. |

Load up 2142 and every server in NA is GREEN Of course the real test will be on a non weekend night. If it's this good Mon-Thurs then I will rejoice!
Of course it took a whole different approach to get some results, so I'm glad I got through to Tony and got this ball rolling. |

| reply to GreatPumpkin I live in the Kingsport and haven't noticed any connection problems in the past few weeks. To be honest though most of my internet usage is between 9pm-1am for gaming. However, I got off work early tonight and been having all sorts of dropped connections from STEAM and even just surfing web pages (i.e. reading the previous post in this forum). E-mail seems to be moving fine though. I just selfishly hope this "fix" did not screw up my connection. Maybe it didn't since I'm not normally on this early but if you guys have been experiencing the latency that I had today for the past few weeks then I feel for ya. |

Everything went through last night. Our engineer in Kingsport added some interfaces and rerouted some traffic. Things seem to be a bit more balanced out.
Tonight during peak we will see how things hold out.

I do not know much about DSL...never had it myself. My son had RoadRunner in Florida and had DSL for a while. He liked it (the DSL). I also know some one right now that has DSL in Knoxville (used to have Cox I believe), she also like the DSL. I think I would give it a try if the "fix" does not do any good. I wish I had the DSL option but for now I only have Charter and dialup as an option.
I did not even bother trying to get on the net last night, I did not need the frustration.
I did not see a post by IsdnWolf so I assume the ticket was not taken care of yet??
Bigroot-I have no idea why a tracert does not work for you, maybe some one here can help. |

They have a free version and a std version that is a 30 day trial. See if that helps. Jerm: Well traffic shaping is bad for those using Charter if they give us second class service. I hope Charter does care and does something about it if that is the case. I can see your point though that it could be used for "GOOD" causes. I tried ping plotter and it says 100% packet loss. Ive also turned off my firewall. I get the same results on my laptop and desktop. |

Actually no Net Neutrality at this point is only a concept, and is not bound by any law. Would Charter get upset? Who knows, I don't think so they seem to not really care that much as long as you pay the bill!
Traffic shaping isn't automatically bad. In fact it can be very useful to give "everyone an equal slice of the pie" when bandwidth fills up. Unfortunatly it can also be used to discriminate and determine "who gets cuts to the front of the line". Right now for some strange reason Speakeasy seems to get that privilege. |

1. It would "seem" Charter would be just as upset as we are if what you suspect is true?
2. This shaping "IF TRUE" is not legal right??
3. This is very interesting and wonder how the fix Mr. Wolf mentioned (ticket in per posts on this thread) which should be done Friday night...and what effect this fix will have. (I had high hopes and now I have to wonder).
4. Mr. Wolf..can you please give us your thoughts on this? |

| reply to GreatPumpkin Alright everyone - need your help here :)
I think this situation is bigger than any of us realize.
I looked back through this forum at all latency problem posts in regards to AT&T and Charter and noticed "this" kind of latency pattern happening over and over again.
Now charter_hsd provided another piece of the puzzle in this post: »[HSI] AT&T problems
AT&T appears to be using new routers from Avici which are intended to (more or less), traffic shape, according to their website: »www.avici.com/products/
For example just take the first sentence: "Today's IP networks are required to deliver more than simply best-effort traffic"
-----------------------------------------------------
My theory thus far: AT&T is shaping the traffic they get from Charter with these new Avici routers. All our regular (ie consumer grade) traffic during peak times is being given low priority, but some destinations/routes are specifically prioritized (ie Speakeasy, yahoo in some cases).
How can we prove this? Well if your nightly pings are shooting up, ping Speakeasy and show us what you find in relation to your "normal" traffic. |
