| Phone light goes out
Hey guys,
I've been having a significant problem lately. Over the past few weeks, the phone light will just go out on my adapter randomly. I don't know what it is that makes it do this, but obviously when it does, i have no dialtone. I reset my modem, router, and adapter, and it comes back on again without fail, then after a coupel days it will go out again. My router or modem never goes out, just the adapter. Any ideas?

| I agree. It has to deal with your router dropping the IP address of the phone adatper. That's why when you reset everything it works again. Try assiging the ip address of the phone adapter you your router assuming you have a router with QOS. You can find the ip address of the phone by dailing **** and entering 110#. |

1 edit | I'm not familiar with the netgear but most routers have a place that you can assign a static IP address and tie it to the MAC address of the unit.
This board may not be the place to get support on your router unless you just happen to run across someone with the same setup.
I'm running a WRT54GL with Tomato firmware so unfortunately I can't help you, sorry. |

| reply to Tim618 Log into your router. On the left-hand side will be a list of functions. Select "LAN settings." On that page, about 1/2 way down, there is an option to set a static IP address for all or any of the devices connected to the router. Select that option, and then select your ATA. Assign it an IP address outside of the range for IP addresses that the router will dynamically set. I think Netgear's default is 192.168.0.X - with #1 being assigned to the router - and a range up to 10 or 20. So pick 192.168.0.25. Hit the refresh key and reboot your ATA. |

| For the echo, try lowering your FXS Port gain (incoming and outgoing) to something lower. I lowered both my settings from -3 to -6. There is also a tick box called "more echo suppression" that you could try.
With respect to losing your phone light, have you tried sticking the ATA in DMZ to rule out firewall issues? |

| reply to Tim618 I don't think its my ISP... although it could be. I have good signal and speed, etc.. I do have a viatalk ATA.. When it happens it also kicks me off aol instant messenger as well.. but as soon as it says connection lost, and i click connect, it reconnects right away, but i have to cycle the modem, router, and ATA to get the light back on. |

What is your broadband and what is used for the networking ... ie is it cat5 hardwired or wireless? cable , dsl, fiber or wireless? Are you still with Windstream? |

2 edits | reply to Tim618 yep, windstream is my ISP, DSL... I have a wireless router, but i am wired in with all 3 ports plus wired in with the ATA, all wiht cat5 cable, the only thing wireless is my laptop. Hope we can trace this down...
Could it be my router? modem? or ISP? Or all of them? eek... this could take a while! |

1 edit | Well, since your IM dies, that's telling us your losing the internet ( if its hardwired ). Your review is pretty negative on your DSL ... so not sure why your surprised that would be the issue
I would suggest you look in the Verizon DSL forum here on BBR as they have tons of ideas and tech tips on things to try and find the cause of the disconnects.
Quickly, you need to do a process of elimination, first try only one device directly to the dsl modem, if that still has issues, then its the dsl line or modem not the router. For DSL debug, make sure you disconnect all the devices on the phone line, other phones/faxes/filters to see if its one of them. Another is if you have an alarm in the house, that can be the cause. You can login into the dsl modem and check the line status and error logs ... but enough , this is NOT a VOIP or Viatalk issue for sure and for more help work with your ISP if your stuck, thats what your paying them for |

| reply to Tim618 my DSL is much better now that i have had a tech work on my line about 4 months ago. I have a new modem, got it 3 months ago. I have no fax, etc, plugged into the line at all. I have no filters because i dont need any because i only have the phone cord for the phone plugged into the ata, thats the only thing hooked up to the "house" is the phone cord to the ata, and the phone cord from my directv, is also hooked to the ata via a splitter. Ill try giving them a call an see what they say. |
