[Help] Using a GPS Unit while shooting

I have been a lurker to this forum.

I have done a search in the forum and was not able to find the answers I am looking for. I do apologize in advance if the information is already posted.

Recently, I went on a backpacking trip in Yosemite. I saw and photographed some really cool views. I also had a GPS unit recording tracks.

I have since loaded the GPS data into the EXIF data for the images.

I am trying to find a solution for automatically placing the pictures on a scalable map (such as Google's maps) for viewing by the other participants on the trip. So far my searching and experimentation has only resulted in my being able to place the images in Google Earth or having to manually place the image on Google's map.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not quite sure what you mean here by 'automatically'? Could you elaborate a bit on that?

Mauricio, as you may know, put up a map of some of his walks in British Columbia. (I'll try to locate the thread shortly.)

Ummm, also what GPS unit are you using? And what, if any digital mapping software? I use a Garmin Legend Cx and their MapSource software. That combination can then link directly to Google Earth and display the route and waypoints. At that point, you could just link the photo images to the appropriate waypoints.

Of course, if you pop the $20 for Google Earth Plus, you can directly download into Google Earth, bypassing the intermediate step.

I know you can get from Google Earth to Google maps, but I haven't really investigated that yet, since I've already got the Garmin topo maps.

Or, wait, are you trying to use the EXIF GPS information directly to place the images on a map? I haven't considered that, yet.

Okay, I've seen something on this somewhere. Will try to find it later today (if no one else provides a citation by then).

Only problem is that at the moment, I can't recall if what I saw involved loading the GPS info into the image EXIF or whether it involved downloading the EXIF GPS data to geoposition the image! I do recall something, however, about the fact that EXIF data was not yet as standardized in presentation format (for different DSLRs, in particular) as we might like.

At the time, I didn't pursue it. First, I thought I'd just wait until someone was kind enough to start building simple GPS units into DSLRs. And, second, upon further reflection, I wasn't sure I wanted the GPS information embedded in the photos. I don't necessarily want everyone who may eventually get a copy of some of my images to know where they were taken; this is often especially true with wildlife images. Still, that was just my thinking on the subject.

Oh, as I mentioned earlier, Mauricio's thread can be found at »[Hiking] Widgeon Creek , if you haven't already seen it.

I'm not sure if it's elaborate enough for your purpose, but Flickr has a map feature. I believe they're using Yahoo! maps, though. There are probably other sites that do something similar.

Incidentally, it looks like Justin was toying with the idea of providing this kind of capability here at BBR/DSLR forums about eighteen months ago! »[OT] Pin your photos to a map .

I don't know what became of the idea.

Indeed I did. But as others, after reflection, I decided against tagging. I somehow felt it would make them less special.

In any case, I never came across something that does what you are looking for, but that doesn't mean it doesnt exist.

Okay, here we go! Just plug "EXIF GPS" into Google Search and wait for the answer!

Boy, things have sure changed since the last time I went looking for information on doing this.

Thank you jvmorris See Profile. This is going to be interesting. I use the same GPS unit and software as you mentioned above and have been thinking/wondering about this for a long time.

About a year and a half ago, we got involved in doing a tree management survey in my neighborhood cluster association. We ended up marking and describing over 300 trees and, quite frankly, a good GPS was essential to recording where each of these trees were (it's a heavily wooded community and there were many other trees not of interest). However, once we'd gotten down to about 40 trees requiring immediate action, we found the Review Board wanted photos before approving our recommendations and that was when I discovered that photos could be attached fairly painlessly to Google Earth (Plus, that is).

But it really was Mauricio's thread here that finally opened my eyes to the wider possibilities. Given that we tramp all over Virginia, West Virginia and the English countryside (with its thousand of public footpaths), the "urge to merge" our digital photographs with the GPS information that we routinely collected was irresistable. (Nothing like not being able to recollect where a particular photo was taken a few years later. ) So, hat's off to Mauricio for the nudge.

As time has passed, we've expanded our equipment complement to include not only the obvious (cameras and GPS), but also a digital voice recorder and (shortly) a mini video camera. And so, now we can make personal travelogues!

We're still developing our technique, but I can assure you that there's a lot of pre-planning, and post-processing that we now do in addition to simply going on the walk itself.

One minor point: Synchronize the built-in clocks on your GPS unit, your camera, and your other recorders. Makes things a lot easier.

And, for those in the US, you might want to take a look at this: »backpacker.trimbleoutdoors.com/b···ome.aspx

I've been using a nice program called JetPhoto. It's an easy to use photo editor and organizer that has great Geotagging features. You make sure your camera and GPS are set to the same time and then you just have your GPS on when you take pictures. Plug them both into the comptuer and then click "add gps information". It will download the tracks from the GPS, tag the photos and then create you a google earth file with the photos attached.

The pro version which has all the features is $25.

That's what i use. the nice thing is that it'll geocode .dng files. I can convert my raw files to dng and geocode them. That way after I do my editing the GPS info is already in the jpeg exif.
