| pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow My mail server is pop.att.yahoo.com
I have been experiencing very sluggish mail downloads for a couple of weeks or more. Often cannot get anything to connect.
Is anyone else seeing this, or is there a better server to use?
Thanks Bob | |

| Re: pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow ATT Internet has had problems in Calif. for over 24 hrs. Some websites will not load, including Yahoo (AT&T's email service). I can get access via Charter.
A call to AT&T today resulted in recording saying that users in the '805' area 'may have internet problems' unit 'noon'. Well, 9 hours later, still no Yahoo access (or DSL Reports - Using Charter to get online).
No word as to why? Perhaps it's related to data-mining overload in SFO.

Disabling SSL on both smtp.att.yahoo.com and pop.att.yahoo.com incoming brings speeds back to normal, watch that your ports are also get changed back to 25 for outgoing and 110 for incoming.
I'll try going back to SSL everyday until they are fixed. -- Patrick in IL.
I changed to the non-SSL ports and can now get email.

| Re: pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow I just switched to ATT from another ISP a couple of weeks ago and I thought the same about using SSL. I have never used SSL before for email (I use it with my newsserver though) even during a previous stint using PacBell. As you said, they only give the information for using SSL which gives the impression that SSL is the only way email will work. I am now wondering why they want us to use SSL? Not that I am the suspicious type but ATT doesn't have a good reputation for customer support and service.

| Re: pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow You need SSL email for security when you are traveling and accessing your email account across a networked owned by some other provider. This conversion to SSL email access goes hand-in-hand with the new free wifi access and their iPhone sales which can use wifi connections. Frankly, AT&T should have had SSL email access when they first offered wifi, but better late than never.
If you only access your email from your home DSL connection, then you really don't need the SSL protection.

Some people have just switched back to the old servers when these email problems started and the email works on the old servers, but there are also reports here at DSLR that indicate that the old servers are also having their share of access problems so this isn't something restricted to the new servers.

I will wait to hear if/when the SSL server is back on line and also try the SSL settings every once in a while to see if they are up again. It would really be nice if ATT could let us know (not by email!) when the problem has been fixed. Tech support can't help. I once played with them for four days of no connection to the internet only to find that the whole area had been out; but tech support didn't know about it. And I don't know of any "status page" that would let me know about problems. The only one I found says that email is working normally. So it is up to the individual to fight his own battles.

| David,
Thanks for the reply. I probably did not make myself clear, so I will elaborate on the problem. I have 6 att/Yahoo email accounts. One is the primary account used by my modem as my User ID. I do not use this account for any other purpose. Two of the accounts are used for list servers and an additional account is used for craig's list. I use Thunderbird v1.5.0.12 as my email client and it is set to automatically download from the above 4 accounts. One of the remaining accounts is used as my ebay account and the last account is used as my general purpose email account. Thunderbird is set so that it does not automatically download from the last two accounts. I use Mail Washer Pro 5.3 as a spam filter and it is set to automatically monitor the account I use for ebay and the account I use as a general purpose account. It is set to check for new email every 60 minutes. I can also have Mail Washer check these two accounts at any time by clicking on the Check Mail button. I have Mail Washer set so that if sender's address is on my blacklist or on SpamCop or Spamhaus or the email satisfies one of my filters, the email is automatically deleted off of att/Yahoo's pop server. If the mail gets through and I then blacklist the sender, the email is marked for deletion and is deleted when I click on the button to cause Mail Washer to process the email. This means that Mail Washer must re-establish a connection with att/Yahoo's pop server. Recently, both Thunderbird and Mail Washer Pro have been timing out. Additionally, even if Thunderbird or Mail Washer do not time out they have been taking much longer to establish a connection. Once a connection is established it appears the mail download occurs at normal speed. The error message is that a connection has timed out or a connection could not be established. Although I did not make see a relationship earlier, the first indication of a problem was that after directing Mail Washer to delete the email that had been marked for deletion, Thunderbird would down load the same mail when I check these accounts. Although, I had not experienced this problem in the past, it is now clear that Mail Washer was having trouble connecting to att/Yahoo's pop server to delete the mail that had been marked for deletion. The pop server for all of my accounts is pop.att.yahoo.com @ port 995 and the smtp server is smtp.att.yahoo.com @ port 465. Both Thunderbird and Mail Washer Pro are set for SSL connections. The problem is intermittent but has been getting increasingly worse. If there is more specific information you need let me know.

| Seems to be an ongoing problem. Two of the three computers at the house use OE6 and work so-so (very slowly sometimes) with the new settings. The third machine uses Outlook 2002 and will receive with SSL setting after a long delay, but won't send with the SSL setting at all. Hope this is just 'growing pains' with ATT/Yahoo. On home and office Windows XP machines, with both Outlook 3000 and Outlook Express, we get different error messages each time. Called AT&T customer support... After the usual "disconnect the router" and "remove and re-setup the email account" my problem is "escalated" to second-level support.
The support guy tells me that it's a problem with Yahoo, which provides email service to AT&T and that he has sent a trouble ticket to Yahoo. He says he's telling most people to change back to their settings that AT&T has been urging us to change from - In other words, change back to the non-ssl address.

| I started having the problems with att.yahoo on Aug 1. I still have my old pacbell.net accounts. When ATT first advised of changes two months ago, I updated to the new SSL pop/smtp settings in Outlook 2003. No problems until Aug 1 - then no receiving email on my main or sub-accounts. ATT tech support first said my profiles corrupted; deleted; rebuilt multiple times; same problems.
Today, ATT acknowledged a problem - said it was specific to Outlook 2003 having problems with SSL. I pointed out that my Gmail settings work with SSL in Outlook and that my ATT settings worked fine for two months. ATT still blames MS Outlook.
My solution? I set up my Gmail account to send/receive from my ATT acct. Log into Gmail. Go to Settings. Go to Accounts. Choose Get mail from other accounts: Enter your ATT email address and pop info; be sure to use correct SSL POP port 995. Gmail will send a verification email. Once done, set up Gmail to enable POP. Then I set up Outlook to use my Gmail account and deleted the ATT acct.
I am now receiving my ATT email in Outlook via Gmail. I can still send from the ATT account, but I'm likely to completely migrate to Gmail. What's great is that I can still receive email at my old ATT/Pacbell email address for anyone who still has the old address.
Hope this helps some others...

| Well, a big caveat to this "solution" which made it unworkable for me. Gmail's spam filter cannot be disabled - so you still have to use the web-based email to review spam. I have a well-trained and accurate filter that I use via Outlook and I don't trust Gmail's filter to rely on it. Nor do I want to have to load/sync all my contacts with Gmail to ensure that they're on my Gmail whitelist. Back to the drawing board regrettably.
Even without the new SSL settings in ATT/Yahoo, I continue to experience slow or errored downloads. And ATT tech support are, as someone else pointed, out liars - and the one I had today was downright nasty.

| Re: pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow Hi, me again. So, as I stated above, my Gmail solution wasn't workable, due to Gmail not allowing anything from their spam folder to be downloaded. Well, I found a workaround.
After setting up your ATT/Yahoo account to be picked up in Gmail, do the following:
Download and install FreePops. In Outlook, set up a new email account using these settings:
Name: Gmail Spam (or whatever you want) Email address: YourGmailAcctName@gmail.com?folder=spam Incoming Server/POP: localhost Outgoing Server/SMTP: localhost User Name: YourGmailAcctName@gmail.com?folder=spam Password: Your Gmail Password
More Settings: Outgoing server requires authetication Advanced: POP3 2000 (do not check SSL box) SMTP 25 (do not check SSL box)
Save these settings. Now, Outlook should be able to download your Spam folder from Gmail and you can process your own Spam.
If this works, be sure to add FreePops to the StartUp folder in Windows, so that it is running when you try to open Outlook.
All very convoluted, but at least it avoids ATT/Yahoo servers and allows you to control/filter your own spam without having to log onto Gmail.
BTW, ATT & Yahoo suck a**. Good luck all.
