Re: Slow mail servers?

I've been encountering the same delay/time outs when checking my email.

I have noticed that if I compose a message and hit Send/Receive in Outlook, it still handles outgoing messages with ease. But if I only open Outlook to receive messages, it's almost unbearable.

Re: Slow mail servers?

India, HA! Who else is there to get a response from?

I hadn't called tech support in more than a year, and did last month fed up with inconsistent service. Needless to say that was a waste of time- I could explain further but it'd need its own thread.

When I called sales I told the representative that 'I called tech three times looking for help, and couldn't find someone smarter than myself'. He laughed, and gave us crazy upgrades free of charge.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the SPAM recently might be slowing down some servers. I am so pleased to know that I have so many relatives that are sending me e-greeting cards!

System wide issue from what I can see. They are Yahoo's servers so good luck when you call AT&T to get the issue looked into.

Let this be a lesson - Never tie your e-mail to an residential ISP.

ISP = Internet service provider. Not mail provider, not software provider, not virus protection provider, not SPAM filtering provider. I count on them to provide me with access to the 'net. Nothing else.

Yes, good point. Yahoo webmail is still working normally for me. It seems to be a POPmail problem. You would think they would push POP service, since it should use fewer of their resources than web service, but maybe we are a niche group.

I switched off web mail to POP a while back, because of security and portability issues. You could go to gmail. They aren't tied to the ISP, but they still have those other problems. I also run a mail server on my Linux box, but then you are screwed if you lose DSL or if your server conks out. And you have to worry about Sendmail from time to time. (Possibly the world's scariest software.)

So there's no perfect solution.

Still slow as molasses here in New Haven (Westville section). Getting very frustrating since it's been like this since Tuesday.

Mail service continues to remain slow and/or spastic. Sometimes can't connect to the mail server, sometimes it's slow, sometimes it gives me error messages.

It was fixed for a short time yesterday but I'm seeing it again this morning. For me personally, it does not warrant an escalation to the DIRECT forum. It's system wide and the right people have been made aware of the issue.

Re: Slow mail servers?

Still slow this morning for me as well. I can send mail without a problem but am getting errors on the incoming email. For the last several days I didn't get an error, Outlook Express just took a long time, about three minutes, to check incoming email. Sometimes it hangs and Outlook would simply say Error with no message. I have verified that the server settings are correct and checked them against the ATT DSL email setup information off their website.

This morning, I am getting this message occasionally. I've blocked out the email name.

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'email_name@sbcglobal.net', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

I am getting slow responses as well to the mail servers.

Wonder if they are doing it on purpose so that we have to check our mail by webmail to see all the pretty ads they have? Wouldn't put it past them.

My problem seems to be just time outs trying to get my mail. And it doesn't happen to all my email accounts (I have 7 to check since I am the only one with the computer ATM.)

Re: Slow mail servers?

It seems like it's only the sbcglobal.net email accounts that are having this problem. I check an old snet.net account. That one worked just fine retrieving (spam) emails.

All mine have the @snet.net domain (and have been migrated to Yahoo). Of course if you are using the old, old SNET servers, you probably aren't having this issue.

The snet.net email was migrated over years ago and is currently using the pop.att.yahoo.com and smtp.att.yahoo.com servers that my two troubled sbcglobal.net accounts are using. Strange how the snet.net email address doesn't have incoming email problems but the sbcglobal.net ones do.

Re: Slow mail servers?

All my Snet.net mail accounts are having the same issue with a delay receiving, and another SBCGlobal account I'm responsible for is also having issues. 2 of the accounts are on F811 and the other is on F831.

YES..I'd say last few days at least..occurs on both my PCs which are different OSs, AV, and running different versions of OE.
"Live Chat" with ATT last night was fruitless..they want me to re-install OE even though sometimes I receive email OK and sometimes not. They also tried to blame it my AV and firewall which I disabled as a test..made no difference. They dodged my direct question about the POP 3 server until I asked the 3rd time..they responded it was fine...(sure it is).
