SpeedTouch 780WL Typical Wiring
Hi HireMichael,

Well, only Thomson can be held responsible for the
design choices they make, the ISP switching method
i described previously didn't please me either but
it could be worst, actually.  The TP-Link TD-8610,
for example:  i gather from quick readings that it
was able to have its FirmWare trimmed down because
the manufacturer offers external applications with
it but i can imagine it's not always convenient to
make changes in this way.  TekSavvy is only guilty
for not knowing every single unit on the market in
and out so that they'd save us some frustration...

I may be starting to understand what you wanted to
say at the begining.  Lets now see if pictures are
really worth a thousand words, using that above...

One problem with your SpeedTouch 780WL is that the
WiFi antenna must sit in quite a totally different
part of the house and it's nowhere near where Bell
likes to put their demarcation boxes, right?  It's
quite usual to find the later in a basement while,
on the contrary, the average occupants will prefer
to live upstairs...  I must confess your alternate
wiring configuration attracted my attention but it
isn't clear to me why the two filters must mave so
much distance between them.  By choosing a unit as
Thomson's ST780WL you traded WireLess connectivity
for a noisier DSL signal.  I believe this setup is
OKay until cross-talk turns it into a nightmare...

The solution would be to move your SpeedTouch next
to the demarcation box and to add some WiFi relay.

Anyway, stacked filters as shown here work fine for me:

Addendum

If a 2nd WiFi unit is no good option then consider
drilling a hole right above the demarcation box so
that you can make lengths the shortest possible...

Hi Bicephale,

BTW, current status is that my DSL has been perfect for the last 6.5 days (since midnight Mon Jul 27).

Yes, that picture pretty much represents what I have now, except that the splitter is at the inside distribution point in the garage along with the first DSL filter. The actual Bell demarc is outside a few feet away from the inside distribution point.

I'm not sure what you mean. Currently the Speedtouch is on top of my entertainment cabinet next to my TV, my Linux MythTV/Asterisk box, my Videotron cable modem, a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT (for cable modem), a 7 year old 2.4GHz DSS wireless phone and a new DECT wireless phone.

Happily there is no evidence of interference between all these devices. Currently the wireless on the Speedtouch is disabled so I can reboot and mess with it without affecting the rest of my network. I'm using the wireless on the Linksys DD-WRT box instead.

I considered putting the Speedtouch in the garage at the internal distribution point, but came to realize the temperature and humidity extremes in the garage would be bad for electronics.

Why would wireless make the DSL signal noisier ? Wireless signal getting into the DSL/PSTN line ? I haven't heard of that being a problem. I see no evidence of that in my current, or in any previous setups.

Regards,
Mike.
