"THE COMPANY
JOI Internet, a Hawk Communications LLC company, was a national Internet service provider headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. JOI Internet focused on providing the best quality Internet access at the best possible price to individual subscribers and small businesses. JOI Internet provided easy-to-use Internet access by offering customized software, reliable network facilities and responsive customer service. JOI Internet had grown dramatically since its formation in 1999. By 2005 JOI Internet was one of the largest ISP's in the country. JOI Internet invested millions in its voice and data network.

In 2005 Hawk Communications LLC decided to focus on next generation IP services instead of Internet access. Hawk Communications LLC decided to form a new division, JoiPhone, to utilize its existing network and other resources to provide VoIP (Voice Over IP) telephone services. JoiPhone was conceived under the same principle "Best Service at the Best Price".

The company is more than 2 years old and their rating at the site posted by prestonlewis, is a 4.0 out of a possible 5.0.

Just understand that with most companies, 'two lines' = 'two numbers' = 1 'real' number and one 'virtual' number. Joiphone techsupport confirmed that to be the case.

I'm fine with the principle of 1 real number and 1 virtual number, which means they'll share the same vm box and overall features - but I wish they wouldn't say 'two lines' as I believe that's misleading.

I'm not saying people shouldn't try them, they seem to have many happy customers. But if you dig deeper, you'll see the "company" has only been in VoIP for just over a year. Before that, they were a different type of internet company that suddenly shut down (to switch to VoIP; they were a web hosting internet service provider) and refused to refund customer's pre-payments. They have provided services (prior to JoiPhone) under the access4less, access4free, Hawk Communications, and Joi Internet which they sold to Earthlink in 2005. They announced the sale/close of business of April 20, 2005 and ceased their former operations on May 20. One month's notice to their former clients. Here is their old web page before switching to VoIP: '»www.hawkcommunications.com/index.asp'

At $14.95/month, it's unlikely they'll be a profitable VoIP provider. Along with their prior change of direction from one aspect of the internet to another, I'd worry if I were a subscriber of theirs.

But everyone has their own opinion. I'm only trying to provide some facts about their history, as I have done about P8 and some other VoIP providers. Good luck for those who choose to use them.

I guess since the Sunrocket fiasco most people will hopefully be wary of investing a large sum of money in a prepaid plan. However every new company needs people to give it a chance, especially if what they offer is what someone is looking for otherwise they will never become the Voicepulse or the Viatalk of the voip world. Even when CallVantage first started they had a lot of growing pains.

KoolMoe,

I don't think JoiPhone is one of those companies that deceptively advertises "two lines", at least not that I've seen. In fact, on their site they advertise "two unlimited lines for the price of one" in the 2 for 1 offering. I have their "two line" service and each line has its own distinct number, each with all the features (not shared), and I have a third number which is a virtual number only.

my experience with Joiphone : Oredered on July 23,2007 and recived the ATA SPA 2102 on 30th. Tried to connect the ATA in front of the Verizon FIOS Actiontec router but did not work. Connected the ATA behind the router and I got the dial tone right away. Made couple of test calls, quality was not good as SR or Magicjack. Enabled the DMZ settings on router and still echos and static exists. Noticed that the callers name are not avialable on CID, the time zone was wrong( EST instead of PST) and almost 20 seconds of delay.Called support today and open trouble ticket.Rep. promised a call back today.Requested number port on 23rd and again on 07/30/07, did not receive any response.
So far I am not pleased with the service.

They have some nice features/add-ons. But no BYOD that I could find. Otherwise I'd try them out.

I switched to them after Sunrocket's demise. The quality of the calls are perfect, so was sunrocket. VOIP depends on your internet, and mine is very stable. The two lines, are TWO lines, not ONE line and a virtual number. I have nothing bad to say about them. There web site interface takes some getting used to, and the Simul-Ring rings the Joiphone first, when that times out, you set the timeout seconds, it rings all the other numbers at the same time. This is the only difference with Sunrocket that I see.

To sum it up, it works!

Can somebody here tell me more about Joiphone. I would like to try this company but I would like to see what people are saying about this company. They have now a good international calling plan that I would like to try.

How is the voice quality and service with them?
Also how they are if I want to port my existing number.
More info. I will appreciate

thanks

Well, perhaps the limited comments are due to the draconian language in their terms-of-service. "No public statements or announcements relating to this Agreement may be made by either party without the prior written consent of the other party." is only one such portion as are the sections dealing with forced arbitration in Miami, FL and a prohibition against joining any class actions etc. Many of these type terms I have noticed to be prime news here on DSLr... especially when tossed out by courts.

They nay or may not be a decent service, but I will not be doing business with them under their current terms.

After trying the service for almost one month I decided to transfer my primary number from my company provider and to change my plan to Unlimited world premium that include unlimited calling to 70 countries and 100 destinations because I have families out the country and that was the biggest mistake I did with such a VOIP company. The plan is not unlimited and after 15 days of use I got an email telling me that I was abusing the service.
This is the email.
Dear JoiPhone Customer,

Please be advised that your calls pattern are considered abusive according our Term Of Service, continue excessive use of your JoiPhone account beyond reasonable residential usage will cause service interruption.
Please reduce the usage or change your JoiPhone plan where you will be charge our low International per minute rate.
Please contact billing@joiphone.com if you have question or a need to change your JoiPhone plan.

Thank You
JoiPhone Billing

After this email I checked my calls record and I used a total of 522 international minutes in 15 days and they called this an abusive used. I called but not info about this and not email back to me explaining me this email. I told them that I signed up for an unlimited international plan, but they told me that if I use 5 more than the average of typical residential use will be considered as abuse calls and therefore violating Term of Service Agreement and then I asked how many minutes do I have and there was no info about this from costumer service. What I think is if you sign up for an unlimited plan should be unlimited. After this I decided to cancel the service with them, they are the worse and what is not advertised is the fact that you really do not receive unlimited calling and I don’t recommend this company.

You should file a complain to FCC, BBB, etc., too.

DLSReports.com actually has a section reserved for JoiPhone Reviews and an "Unofficial JoiPhone Discussion Forum"

There is a ton of good information there, including links to other threads on dlsreport.com about JoiPhone, other sites full of reviews of the company, the infamous Terms of Service, and links to the Better Business Bureau site for the company, where you can click the link to file a complaint.

As someone who has personally been victimized by JoiPhone's fraudulent activities, I wanted to try and collect all of the info I could in the actual JoiPhone forum where it would be easier for people to locate.

If you get a chance, go take a look and please add your input to some of the discussion topics.

Also, I have done quite a bit of research on this company, their parent company, their TOS, etc. and filed formal complaints with the BBB and claims with my credit card company for fraudulent charges. If you have any questions about the company or how to complain, or even just want to vent, please feel free to shoot me a note!

Thanks!
Mike
