[Need Info] What is TV over IP?

Stuff like Joost? Or full fledged TV on a computer? Or something like TVAnts? My brain hurts just thinking about this

weird

When I think of IPTV, I think of how my TV is deployed here. we get the equivalent of cable tv over the DSL line.

AT&T's U-verse uses IPTV to transmit their TV service...I assume this is the same thing as TVoIP?

Here's a fairly easy to understand description (PDF):

I guess the definitions here are a bit blurry for me.

I just read this: "The set-top box is the subscriber interface to the TVoIP system, receiving the media stream and decoding it for display on a television set." from that PDF. Is that not what Verizon's FiOS and what AT&T's U-verse does?

I guess what needs to be clarified is...Software IPTV (TVoIP) and hardware.

Software solutions would include services like Joost.

Hardware solutions would be services like Verzon's FiOS and AT&T's U-verse that requires the use of a set top box.

I may be far off base here though, and if I am, please correct me.

So is a slingbox a form of tvoip?

If I set up a MythTV box and view it remotely - is that tvoip?

Is a service like mobitv or joost tvoip?

I don't really see how Myth would fit into this. that's more of HTPC, than TVOIP

Myth running on a single box might be htpc (home theater pc) or dvr (digital video recorder), but myth running in a multinode client-server topology is certainly sending TV over IP.

I am still confused, especially after reading the UTStarcom paper. I have worked with UT for many years and they are basically the Asian version of Fios and yes, they also create the gear for that and it is sometimes deployed in the US.

So, is this just for the segment of the industry that is Joost or is it for all TVoIP or somewhere in the middle? I cannot seem to find the demarcation line yet although it is beginning to look as though this forum intends to only talk about applications?

The only reason this question is vital to me is whether I want(need) to be looking at this forum or if it is just of marginal interest. I run a small CLEC and we do analog tv, what appears to be called IPTV here and the IPTV is also accessible from a PC (which appears to be TVoIP). It can be run realtime or it can be run delayed through hardware or for that matter, stored on a pc and played through a standard MPEG player.

I certainly do not want to take your threads or forum off topic but there is a significant lack of information, both technical and empirical in all of these areas and I am continually searching for more information.

So with all of that said, what is the real difference of the TVoIP and IPTV? By the definitions given, I still see little or no difference except whether the end use is on a tv or a computer, and in the end, that is simply a hardware or software extension (both activities need hardware and software to function, if you don't think so, try running your video on your computer without a graphics chip) The screens are becoming more alike and the appliances (TV & Computers) themselves are becoming more alike.

So where does that leave us in this discussion? In either event, thanks to the mods for starting this, it is an interesting set of questions that will be relevant for some time.

I have been holding off from posting here for a little while for that very reason...

I have been lurking here though, and it looks like if it is a program that runs on your computer, lets you watch pre-recorded content (not live as in actual TV stations) and delivers it using the Internet Protocol, it is worth talking about on this board, anything else is not.

That is the direction this board seems to be taking as of now. It will be interesting to see how this board turns out.

aaahhhh!@#!@

I got it

watching ABC tv shows on their site after they went live and finished would be TVOIP ????

And we are expecting some providers will sell this content to us which was aired before.

hmmmm

why would I do that since I can record the program on my pvr. for free ???

any way lets see if I am guesing tvoip correctly~~~

It all depends on how loosely you want to interpret the term TVoIP...It can take several paths, and the path of this forum is not quite clear. Until it has been made truly clear (hopefully mods are working on that) I will just not post, but I will be monitoring this board.

This is exactly why I am getting confused...but I will step out of it for now and let the forum pick its own path.

Hope to be able to join in on the discussions soon.

Re: [Need Info] What is TV over IP?

Good to see theres finally a forum for this kind of stuff @ DSLR. I hope we get some more members in here for collaboration purposes.

I downloaded joost a few days ago, and I'm pretty blown away considering its a free service. I don't really have many channels on my cable (never really been one to pay for TV) so I'm loving joost!
