Re: unions hate them? all the more reason to USE them!

I agree .. unions may have had their place back when labor laws didn't exist.
Now, with few exceptions, they hold back progress, and assist in offshoring jobs.

I'll give a hint... Toyota vs. the big 3. Guess who won.
I've been inside some of those plants, and many are job protecting slugs and union/management relationships are poor at best.
I've seen workers sleeping on the job (sleeping there, as they have a 'real job' when they get done their shift), some sabotaging production, others outright stealing things from engines/compents/electronics to janitor supplies. The union protects them, and they never get fired. The typical age of these employees are +50.

I've worked on both Union and Non-Union jobs (for the same company even), and I think Union jobs typically hurt the overall economy/industry these days.

Yeah, because Toyota was smart enough to pay a reasonable rate to skirt a union in the first place.
While unions, like the rest of America, has gotten fat and lazy, they are still very much needed.

TMMTX

@rr.com

I have no idea where you people think that "Toyota" pays good, trust me TMMTX pay SUCKS, I speak from experience. benefits are marginal, work ethics are EXTREMELY SICK (ex. 3 days out no matter the reason, YOUR GONE). How about bad weather/tornado? EVERYONE is stuffed into a so called tornado shelter (RESTROOM) which is roughly a 25x25 space x 50 - 100 people. want to call a loved one in an extreme emergency? your out of luck no phones/cells are allowed on Toyota site if caught its termination and banned forever at Toyota. Laws you say?
you sign a contract stating they are in right to terminate with or without cause/reason end of story. if you don't sign this don't think you will be working for this company or any on-site supplier for that matter.

Housing market pre Toyota in south side satx about 75k today's market for house on south side no less then 140k
Toyota pay DOES NOT support this trust me. all suppliers pay about same base line as Toyota assembly etc.

yet a truck sells for on avg. $30k x 150k trucks per year = $4.5 billion a year, way to go Toyota this is just the Tundra line

of course Toyota itself makes about $2k in profit per truck after all is said and done that still = huge profits.

TMMTX and all suppliers are non union so does it need a union? i say it needs something/control.

Wow, where to start commenting on your baseless rant(?!)

First, if you do the math, simply having Toyota as a large employer in that part of TX adds a lot to the economy, unionized or otherwise. You may not want to accept that fact, but it's true. The situation is by no means as black and white as you've unfortunately portrayed it. For example, even non-unionized suppliers/contractors can create a heck of a lot of local jobs which otherwise would not exist, stimulating further demand for more positions. Yes, a great deal of these jobs will not feed a family of four, but that's not the point.

I suggest you also consult with both an economist and a real estate professional regarding your ridiculous assertion that Toyota in some way would be solely responsible for current soft housing market.
