| [Vista] Print Spooler service will not start. I'm having a problem on my laptop which runs Vista HP. The problem is that none of my printers are available. I'm not sure what happened, but this was a sudden problem.
I checked for spyware/adware/virus/etc, but only found a few remnants that were left from a previous spyware infection. After checking I found that the print spooler wasn't starting because of a dependency. I then found that the SSDP service wasn't starting either. Both had a common dependency of the HTTP service. I've checked online and found some info on the HTTP service that basically said the HTTP service wasn't necessarily a service.
This was reassuring because I couldn't find it in the services snap-in. But still I can't find any references on this specific problem. Another not is that I can't run a Vista command prompt. When I attempt to run a command prompt whether doing it directly by clicking the file, typing CMD in the run option or by clicking the shortcut on my start menu, a window pops up and then shuts down. I can run command.com, but when I try to run any command from the prompt, I get "Program too big to fit in memory".
I've scanned and rescanned with various spyware/antivirus/adware/trojan/rootkit programs but they all come back clean. Scripts and removal tools that utilize a root command shell, don't run because they shut down as I stated before. I don't believe this is a spyware problem, but may be a left over effect of one that just manifested now. Either way I figure it would be an MS problem at this point so I figured I'd ask here.

| k....if you are on vista, and your spooler service does not work, you might have attached a network printer that is shared through a server.
i have a toshiba e-studio65 printer (tcp printer), but also have it shared off of the server. This caused the print spooler service in vista to lock up, not to be recovered. I could not even delete the printer anymore.
Next, i un-shared that network printer of the server, because vista could re-discover the printer, and i'm back to square one.
After restoring Vista to the ORIGINAL install point, i connected that printer through a local TCP/IP port, and installed the drivers for the manually (XP drivers by the way, because there were none for Vista).
From what i have read out there, this only happens to some printers. So, if you have a networked printer (connected directly to a network plug), do not go through another printer to get to it. Connect as a local port, and you will be fine. I think this might be a bug in Windows2003 Server printer sharing or the Vista print sub-system.
