Can't release routers IP address

I have my computer behind a netgear 814v2 router. I wanted to change to a wgr614, because the 814 refuses to accept wireless input anymore. While trying to switch the two routers I found that my computer will not release the 814 ip addy, I can't even hook up directly to my modem due to this problem. Now, short of doing a clean install of windows xp, is there anyway around this? I have tries disabling the LAN connection, hard rebooting modem, then enabling LAN etc, but it does not release. Would installing a new NIC card work?
