I had the same prob with macbook c2d 2.16ghz with the wireless n patch from apple. The connection dropped approx. every 5 min no matter how strong the signal. The problem for me turned out to be the wpa settings... Changed the cipher type to tkip from aes, and set the security mode to wpa-personal, wpa mode to auto.
Connection is now flawless...
(Firmware 1.05 and now 1.10) |

I am still having the problem. It happens with firmware 1.03, 1.04, 10.5, and 1.10.
At this point I think it's an Apple problem. |

I am having the same issue. I have a MBP 2.33. It was working fine on my DIR-655 with firmware 1.03. I upgraded to 1.05 and immediately started having problems, drops every couple of hours. I upgraded to 1.10 and it got worse, drops every 20 minutes or so.
I ran iStumble and discovered my neighbors at channels 6 and 11. My DIR-655 was set to auto channel, which chose channel 3, I turned that off and selected channel 1. I haven't been dropped in 3 hours.
I remember turning on auto channel when I upgraded from 1.03 to 1.05. This may have been the problem. Because there are only 3 non-overlapping channels, my neighbor on channel 6 was overlapping with me when I was on channel 3.
Hopefully this will fix everything. |

Okay, I was able to consistently replicate the dropouts by trying to stream music either over my network (from iTunes on another Mac) or from a website. This seemed to consistently kill the connection for me.
I redoubled my search for a solution after the false start I had earlier and I think I've found it. After applying the fix I've put the MBP to sleep, restarted it, etc... and it still seems to be rock solid.

OK...I just ran AirMoose. It found 5 other wireless networks besides mine. 3 of them are using channel 6 and 2 of them are using channel 11. Mine is using channel 1. So doesn't that throw your "same channel" theory out the window? (At least in my case) |

Be skeptical all you like. I'm just stating what worked for me.
Of course there's always the possibility that I am just trying to mislead you somehow for my own personal and nefarious purposes.
I hope this works for you. If it doesn't, then I certainly hope Apple's next release does the trick for you.

Hmmmmmmm...I'm skeptical of this, but I'll give it a shot in a bit. The problem with the dropping is not exclusive to the DIR-655, and is even happening with Apple's own AirPort Extreme router. This problem also was non-existent prior to OS X being updated to 10.4.10 (not just for me, but everyone), so that tells me that Apple did something in the 10.4.10 update that caused this. I had rock-solid connections to my DIR-655 prior to updating OS X to 10.4.10. Most people are looking for 10.4.11 to (hopefully) fix this issue. |

Skip to end of this message for the solution I used if you don't want to read the boring backstory.
I got a new Macbook Pro about three weeks ago and it worked fine with my old D-Link DI-624. The DI-624 isn't a bad router at all (came with my VZ FIOS install about a year ago) but I wanted something with a bit more range and speed. The DIR-655 came highly recommended so I picked one up and installed it about two weeks ago. Ever since then I've been having the dreaded MBP connection drop. Every couple of minutes I'd lose connection and have to manually reconnect from the airport menu. Of course I researched the issue and tried everything and anything I could find short of rolling back the OS ver (10.4.10) or the router FW (1.05) to no avail. Although I had tried changing the router's wireless setting from automatic to a fixed channel, I hadn't done an adequate local survey apparently. I found airmoose (search for it on macupdate) and it showed me a local wireless network that was bouncing in and out on the channel I had tried before. So I chose another channel (furthest away from any other channel in use) and my problems are over!! 
I guess the 'N' standard is a bit touchy about this.
Anyway, this worked for me, and I hope it works for you.
SOLUTION:
Step1 - Get AirMoose (free) »www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25661
Step2 - Find all local wireless networks and choose a channel not in use (if possible, choose one with an empty channel on either side as well)
Step3 - Go to your DIR-655 wireless set up page and uncheck auto select channel and choose the channel you decided upon in step2.
Step4 - Celebrate |

I updated my DIR-655 to firmware 1.05 yesterday, and have noticed no difference in my MacBook wireless connection. No better, and no worse. |

I can confirm this. I use Macbook Pro and DIR-655, I had no connection problem before updating to 10.4.10, since updating to 10.4.10, the connection drops every 20-30 minutes averagely, and it doesn't re-connect by itself. I thought it might be the DIR-655 problem, but it's not, I have tried several different routers, all the same.

| I've been running on 1.04 firmware for some time with no stability issues.
After upgrading to 1.05 I noticed that my C2D MacBook Pro (n enabled) would lose its wireless connection periodically, and not automatically reconnect.
I tried reinstalling 1.05, reset its configuration to the defaults, and manually reconfigured it.... same problem.
I've now returned to 1.04, and am no longer suffering the issue. |
