Hard Drive/CD Drive starts spinning

Hey my uncle is having a problem with his computer. He says out of nowhere his CD Drive/Hard Drive will just start spinning randomly quite often. Im not sure what could be causing it, whether it be a virus, Norton(yes, he has this), or just something wrong with it?

Are there any hard drive tests i can run on it? I remember a while ago i ran one on mine, cant remember the name though...it had a ton of little blocks that were green if it was good and red if it was bad.

Any help? Thanks:)

If I were you, I'd tell your uncle to back everything up, the HD *could* be getting ready to die.

What OS? I remember reading something about HD thrashing happening on NEW Vista systems, but if he doesn't use Vista, that wouldn't apply.

Yeah he's going to be backing everything up(whatever is important, today it didnt sound like anything really was) and then he's brining it over here for my dad/me to reformat it. That will see if any problems are resolved.
