|  [Connectivity] Signal troubles - internet freezing
I'm having an intermittent problem with internet activity freezing up. Its completely random. I'll just be playing WoW and I get hit with a huge lag spike. I alt-tab out and ping myself in mIRC and get no response. Try to go to a website and it doesn't connect. But after 5-15 seconds, it all works again. Sometimes I'll get disconnected from WoW when it happens.
What I noticed though is the signal levels on my cable modem (Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem). Right now, my levels look like this:
Downstream
Freq/Power: 633.000 MHz 1 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 35 dB
Modulation: QAM256
Upstream
Freq/Power: 25.000 MHz 39 dBmV
Channel Type: DOCSIS 1.x (TDMA)
Symbol Rate: 2560 kSym/sec
Modulation: QAM16
But when I get hit by the lag spike, my Upstream power skyrockets to 58 dBmV and stays there for a couple minutes before coming back down to 39 or 40 dBmV.
Downstream stays pretty solid at 1 dBmV. The lowest I've seen is -1 dBmV. SNR hovers between 35 and 36 dB.
Any ideas? Could something be causing interference? The only nearby electronics are a small speaker about 6 inches away and a CRT monitor about a foot away. The router is on the other side of the monitor. |

| comcast might need to check out why your upstream jumps like that. see if they can look at your modem plots for the last few days to determine if you need a tech visit. the other two levels appear to stay within range but the snr is close to border line. |

You might take a 7/16 (?) inch wrench and gently tighten the connectors in the cable to the modem. If you have the modem anywhere near or next to a CRT, your CPU, or stacked on a router, move the modem at least one foot away. |
