Everytime there is a thunderstorm, no DSL

My Qwest 7 Mpbs DSL connection dies everytime there is a thunderstorm in my area and takes about an hour or so to come back up. I am using the action tek GT701 modem.

It does not seem to be related to power fluctuations. The modem does nothing out of the ordinary, the only way I know there is a problem is because the green light internet light does not come on. It will ususally reconnect on its own several minutes after the thunderstorm quits.

I'm not sure what would cause this, anyone have ideas?

Do you have phone service also? Is it affected by the thunderstorms? It could be a problem in your drop, or cable, or it could be one of the T1 lines if you are on a remote dslam. Too many variables without knowing more info. Later... Mike....

Are you sure it's not lightning instead of the thunder? I've got that problem, and have for some time. Qwest has been unable to provide an explanation or resolution as they have went through the cabling. It doesn't appear to be a real common issue (other perhaps members don't report it), but there are a few members on this Qwest forum, and a few other Telco DSL providers, that reported similar issues where lightning either causes high error rate, and/or connection loss.

Yes I have phone service that is not affected by thunderstorms. Since I have 7 Mbps, my understanding is that my connection can only come from the CO, correct?

Since DSL cables are buried in the ground I am having a hard time understanding why a thunderstorm and no power interruptions would cause a connection to drop... It's not like satelite which is very prone to interuptions with weather conditions.

PS Christcorp - I was raised and lived in Cheyenne for 30 years before moving to Colorado Springs. Damn sometimes I want to come back! But I have 7 mbps here where in Cheyenne I could only get 1.5.

Cheyenne misses you too. FWIW, you CAN have 7mb from a remote DSLAM if it's fed with a DS3. So, it doesn't have to be from the C.O. Also, just because the cable near your house is buried, doesn't mean it's buried all the way back. I have worked on way too many cables where it went from aerial to buried and back to aerial a number of times. Later... Mike...

It's been so long since I posted on here I forgot I had an account.

It could be lightning related. I implied that when saying it only comes from thunderstorms because the only way you can have thunder is if lighting comes first.

I've had DSL in 2 other addresses and this is the first that drops the connection due to lightning storms.

I live a newer neighborhood and there are no visible power poles. From what I can see everything is buried underground (telephone, cable, electricity). That is why I don't understand how lightning could take down my connection.

Re: Everytime there is a thunderstorm, no DSL

Lightning could be affecting power which is affecting the DSLAM, if remote. If you are indeed a direct feed from the C.O., it is possible that the crossbox, terminal, or section that is above ground could be getting affected. And FWIW, lightning does affect buried services. I've had to repair a few cables that were buried and had got burnt by lightning. Later... Mike....

I have ATT/Bellsouth DSL and the same exact thing happens to me. The thunder can sound many miles away and it will still happen. In fact google sent me to this post as I was looking for answers.

Re: Everytime there is a thunderstorm, no DSL

Same thing in Atlanta with AT&T DSL 6MB. It did not happen when I had 1.5. With the storms this week it is up and down. If you hear the distant thunder - it will cycle down then come right back. Since I use VOIP for a business line it is terrible? If anyone hears what could be done to eliminate I would appreciate it.

Re: Everytime there is a thunderstorm, no DSL

I bet it's actually lightning and not the thunder. I don't see how thunder can really do anything to a physical line. In my case, when I had a much lower train rate, the issue was still there.

Maybe it's not the lightning. Could it be the rain? My parents had trouble with static on their phone lines whenever it rained.

Re: Everytime there is a thunderstorm, no DSL

In my case it is not, neither at the center office (which direct distance wise isn't far), nor in my area. It is most definitely lightning. I've been through this for a few years now. I used to think it was rain, simply because thunder/lightning/rain occurring as a package. However, at night, when you can see the lightning better, before any rain, it became obvious in my case.
