4 edits | IMG Bugs and missing features FAQ Please read this FAQ before posting questions about the new IMG. Most likely you'll find the answer here. If you do find something that isn't answered and you feel it should be added to the FAQ PM me or post your suggestion here. This is a work in progress and probably will be changed constantly to reflect bug fixes and/or updates Verizon adds at a later date.
•Important Notes: This FAQ was written in reference to IMG Build 3.40 and will be updated as new builds appear. The FAQ has also been divided into three sections: Bugs, Missing Features, and General Support.
Bugs Updated: 8/25/07
1. Q: Why is my box randomly rebooting? A: Apparently this is a bug and may never happen to you, may happen very rarely, or may reboot constantly.
2. Q: My box is missing more than half of its space for Standard Definition. What's happening? A: It's a bug, according to Verizon. The "recorder status" assumes you're recording programs at 8Mbps yet you're really recording at 3.5Mbps for standard definition. According to Verizon, you should still have the same space as you always did and a bug fix is coming soon. It should be noted that it's still a highly debated topic and some believe that excuse is incorrect and that we really are missing space. See the next question for additional information.
3. Q: Do I really only have 12 hours of HD space? A: Yes. Although it isn't clear why just yet. I have confirmed that after 12 hours of HD recording the DVR will start to delete programs. We should be getting 20-25 hours with a 160GB hard drive. This is either a different bug than the "Recorder Status" bug, since the space shouldn't be missing, or could be a universal missing space issue that Verizon has yet to confirm. This could very well mean we are in fact missing space with Standard Definition too.
4. Q: When I add channels to my favorites it also adds the Spanish equivalent. Deleting the Spanish version automatically deletes the English version. What's wrong? A: This is another bug. It only affects some markets apparently. Although Verizon has yet to confirm it I would assume a fix is on it's way. Calling Verizon to let them know this is happening to you wouldn't hurt and may actually get a fix out faster.
5. Q: I added HD channels to my favorites yet I can't see them. What's wrong? A: This is a bug. Apparently the favorites feature ignores HD channels. Hopefully Verizon fixes this issue. I would highly suggest calling Verizon and letting them know about this issue. Note: Apparently not everyone is affected by this bug.
6. Q: When rewinding/fast forwarding my stop button doesn't work. Is there something wrong? A: This is a bug. Verizon has confirmed they are working on a fix. A possible workaround would be pressing play, and then hitting the stop button. (Apparently Verizon claims this is an issue on their own site yet I haven't heard of someone with this issue. If you have it let me know!)
7. Q: While in a recording if I press info twice I'm presented with a screen where I can delete the program. Can't I use that when I want to delete a program I'm done watching? A: I would highly suggest against it. There is a bug where if you delete the program using that screen the space used by the program will remain while it'll still delete from your DVR recordings. The only way to get back the missing space is by rebooting the box.
8. Q: Why won't a particular series let me set up a series recording? A:There appears to be a bug with certain shows where the DVR doesn't recognize it as a series. Hopefully this will be fixed but a possible workaround would be setting up a reoccurring manual recording.
9. Q: The time on my DVR is off by one minute, whats wrong? A: Apparently it's a bug and has no affect on your recordings.
10. Q: My STB won't download program guide data (it just says please wait for every channel). It won't connect to VOD. In Settings->System Info it says Network Status: Offline. Cold power cycling the STB does not fix the problem. A: The only way to fix this is to call Verizon and have them reset your STB.
11. Q: I was watching live TV on one tuner and my box was recording something on another. Suddenly it told me it had to turn to the channel I was recording on yet I was recording only one show. Whats up? A: There is a bug that affects some users where the box thinks it needs three tuners when it's recording one recording and adding an extra minute to it. Verizon has told one person a fix is coming.
12. Q: A recording of mine didn't record the full show, what happened? (I.E. 1/2 hour show but only recorded 20 minutes or 1 hour show but only recorded 45 minutes) A: Apparently this is a bug where the DVR suddenly stops recording a show for no apparent reason. It should also be noted that this could have been caused by the "reboot bug". (See first question for more information)
13. Q: When I go to play a recording it asks if I want to resume watching it. I never started watching it, what gives? A: There are random times where the recorder thinks you already started watching a recorded program when you haven't and will resume playing at a random position. It's a minor bug and simply selecting "Play From Start" will fix it.
14. Q: I started watching a recording from the beginning which was still being recorded. I then paused it to come back to it later and when I hit resume it resumes at the very end of the recording rather than where I left off. Is this a bug? A: It sure is. There is no workaround other then not playing a recording while it's still recording, manually remembering where you left off, or watching the entire program completely.
Missing Features Updated: 8/24/07
1. Q: How do I set a reminder? A: Unfortunately you can't yet. According to Verizon this feature is coming soon.
2. Q: Can I delete channels I don't receive from the guide? A: Not yet. Verizon has confirmed that this feature is coming soon though! For now they suggest using favorites, but that doesn't do much good for those experiencing the Spanish channel bug.
3. Q: When a recording finishes I'm not immediately presented with an option to delete the program but instead put back into my recordings. Is this normal? A: Yes. Apparently Verizon chose not to include that option. You have to locate the program in your recordings and delete it manually.
4. Q: Can I change the default channel that the favorites guide starts at. (Mine defaults to the last channel I was watching before the upgrade so no matter where I am, going to favorites starts at the local weather channel instead of picking up where you currently are in the channel guide) A: No, as of now it is not able to be changed. Deleting that channel from your favorites will just bump the start point to the next higher channel.
5. Q: Can you use the favorite guide in a circular progression of channels. A: No, you start at your default channel and have to go either up or down the channel list. Once you hit your first channel in your favorites list you have to reverse and go through the entire list in order.
6. Q: Is there slow motion in the new guide? A: Unfortunately it appears the slow motion feature has been taken out of the new IMG. However, you can manually jump individual frames by pressing pause, and tapping rewind or fast forward.
7. Q: Can I view upcoming episodes of a particular show via the Season Manager menu? A: Unfortunately not yet but hopefully Verizon will add this feature. A possible workaround would be using the search feature or scanning through your scheduled recordings.
8. Q: Can I view upcoming programs on an individual channel? A: This feature exists in the new guide but is a little more complicated to get to. Hit Menu->Search->Search with keyword. Enter the channel you would like to see future programing of. You can now view upcoming programming for that channel. For example, if I enter HBO it gives me all of the current HBO channels. If I select HBO High Definition it then gives me several dates. I then select the date I want and it shows me all upcoming shows on that particular date.
9. Q: Can I set the menu so it is 16x9? A: No. Hopefully this feature will be added. Call up Verizon and let them know you want it!
10. Q: Can I record the same program, both in HD and SD, at the same time? A: No.
11. Q: Is there a way to swap between tuners with the new IMG? A: No. I would suggest contacting Verizon and requesting this feature. Hopefully they will listen.
12. Q: Can I add additional space to my box via the eSata or USB inputs? A: The USB? Never. The eSata? Not yet. Motorola released new firmware that enables the eSata inputs but unfortunately FiOS, or any other major TV provider, has yet to use them. Contact Verizon and let them know you want this feature!
13. Q: I set up a show to record and it never recorded. How come? A: Unfortunately theres no way to know why for sure. If you want Verizon to implement a feature that lets you know why something wasn't recorded give them a call and request it. If enough want it hopefully it'll be added in a future update!
General Support Updated: 8/24/07
1. Q: When will Verizon release updates? A: The only confirmed update is for December. There are unconfirmed reports that Verizon will be releasing a bug fix in the next 2-4 weeks. Several people have also been told that updates are coming soon.
2. Q: Is there a special number I can call for tech support, to find out when the IMG is coming to my area, or to report bugs? A: Yes. The number is: 1-888-811-1371
3. Q: I have a Scientific Atlanta remote control. Why won't the play and stop buttons work while in VOD? A: Try changing the code for cable operations on your remote from 0007 to 0008. This should fix it.
4. Q: Is there a way to speed up the rewind or fast forward feature? A: Yes, simply press the rewind/FF button multiple times. Unfortunately you're now limited to a max of x3 rather than the old guide which allowed you to do x4.
5. Q: How do I check what build of the IMG I have? A: Menu->Help-> System Information. "Release" and "Build Number" are the most important values here. This FAQ assumes you have Release: 1.0.3 and Build 3.40. I will update the FAQ as new builds are released.
6. Q: With the old guide I could turn the box off and press Menu to change resolution settings. This no longer works with the new guide. Is there still a way to do this? A: Yes and contrary to popular belief you don't need to unplug your box! Simply turn off your box, immediately hit OK which will bring you into the diagnostic menu, turn off the box again and immediately hit Menu. You'll need to hit the buttons directly on the box itself and not the remote.
7. Q: When is the new guide coming to my area? A: The best way to find out is to call 1-888-811-1371 and ask. It'll happen around 2-5AM on the given date. It's important to note that just because they give you a date doesn't mean it's set in stone.
8. Q: Considering all of these issues, is the new IMG really this bad? A: Depends who you talk to. I still prefer it over the old guide and think it will eventually be a great guide as long as bug fixes come soon. At times it does feel like it's still in Beta though. It seems like people either like it or totally hate it with a passion for the most part.

| Re: IMG Bugs and missing features FAQ Hi: Thank you for compiling this list. Let me share with you my own experience: * My list of Favorites does show my HD marked as favorites. No problems there * When FFWD or RWD my DVR, Stop button does work..brings me back to the list of recorded programs. Now, if I PAUSE and then hit the FFWD button, it does not respond (stays in PAUSE) until I hit PLAY or STOP but this seems to be proper behavior
* When a recording finishes, the guide was back to the list of the Recorded Programs, not need to press DVR again. From there, I browse my list and select the program to be deleted.
My system info shows: Release 1.03, Build Number 03.40

| Some shows which could be recorded as series with the old EPG can not be recorded as series with the new IMG (see the topic "DVR Not Recognizing Certain Series as Series"). Seems to be especially true on ESPN. This is not a guide data issue as the old EPG (using the same data) is able to record these shows as series. | |

| In VOD , Play, Stop buttons would not work. FFD, REW, Pause buttons would work. In my SA remote, I changed the code for cable operations, from 0007 to 0008. This may help for those who are using the Scientific Atlanta remote. Now all buttons work fine in VOD. | |

| Re: IMG Bugs and missing features FAQ Another bug someone discovered on AVS:
You can't record the same program name on two different tuners at once. This problem arises if you want to record the HD version of a program for local viewing and the SD version of the program for remote (MRDVR) viewing on a STB.

| Thanks for publishing this FAQ. Here's my list of bugs found with the Media Room DVR and Standard Set Top Box. The following bugs pertain to using the standard STB to watch Multi-Room DVR recordings.
1. If I watch a recording in progress on the standard STB, it doesn't start at the beginning. Instead, I'm viewing it as it is being recorded. Since I'm watching sports shows, this has the effect of spoiling the game for me because I can see the current score. There's no way for me to start at the beginning. I have to press rewind and wait for however long it takes to rewind.
[It appears that this bug is fixed as of 8/21/2007]
2. The progress bar doesn't work. You have no indication where you are when rewinding/fast forwarding when using the Standard Set Top Box.
3. There's no super fast rewind/fast forward. Only 2 arrows or 3 arrows rewind/fast forward.
4. If I'm watching a recording in progress, I cannot fast forward and then watch the show at the point where it was recording at the time. Let's say that I'm watching sports and it's set to record for 5 hours. 1 hour into the recording, I start watching from the beginning. When I hit the 1 hour mark, if I fast-forward & then hit play, it takes me to the beginning. Very irritating.

| Here is my list I have been keeping track of - a few of these you have already mentioned and some you have not...
1. Favorites bug: adding Spanish version of channel when adding english version 2. Slow motion no longer works; and frame advance keeps info screen up 3. Deletion bug: when deleting a recorded show while you are watching it by hitting info button twice causes dvd status screen to not update and show incorrect space usage. 4. After watching a recording to the end or hitting stop, throws you back out to a random menu - when it should give you the option to delete, watch again, etc. 5. Page up/Page down buttons sometimes work, sometimes do not in various listings including the guide. 6. Time on front of DVR is sometimes off by 1 minute compared to the info screen. 7. Removal of 'other listings' from series manager. Old guide would allow you to see upcoming recordings of a show in the series manager. Now there is no way to see this other than manually looking through the scheduled recording list or searching for that show in a search. 8. Listings for just one channel. In the old guide you could left arrow over to a channel name and hit ok, showing you a listing of scheduled shows for just that channel hour by hour. No longer works in the new guide. 9. Full screen menus, search, etc for a 16x9 screen. How about using the whole screen for a wide-screen tv, instead of displaying menus in a 4x3 box? At least give us and option to turn that on or off. 10. General widgets errors. I have seen the weather information on the traffic widget and vice verses. 11. Info screen not displaying correct length of recording. Three times now I have seen where the info screen shows 00:00 total time for a 1 hour show. Usually it gives you elapsed time and remaining time but in this case 0 for both. Each time the show was 'Attack of the Show' on G4. 11. Box reboots. I had the box reboot 3 times now... once during a recording, in which case it continued on with the scheduled recording once it came back up - leaving two entries for the show - one for the first half, and one for the second half. Also note that the box never reset with the old guide, so I am doubting it is hardware related. 12. Stop button sometimes does not work. Watching a show the stop button sometimes will not work. Seems to be random occurrence.

Q: My STB won't download program guide data (it just says please wait for every channel). It won't connect to VOD. In Settings->System Info it says Network Status: Offline. Cold power cycling the STB does not fix the problem.
A: The only way to fix this is to call Verizon and have them reset your STB.

It DOES appear to give you the option to "Record Series" now on shows like 'Rome Is Burning' and 'NFL Live' but it will only pick up that first show where you set up the series and not pick up any of the rest that should be scheduled. This is getting beyond ridiculous.

When in the "favorites" guide, if you hit "info" on a particular show and then go back, it dumps you at the first channel and the current hour of the favorites guide therby rendering the favorites guide useless.

| Re: IMG Bugs and missing features FAQ Great job, sgr215. I really appreciate the effort you've put into this bug list. I hope the techs at Verizon are following this carefully.
For me, the worst bug is not being able to quickly delete a recording when I'm through watching it. I hate being dumped into the list of all recorded programs where I have to find the particular one I want to delete.
On the plus side, the Skip feature has been improved greatly. It's fast and smooth now. I have mine set for the one-minute interval. Three or four taps of the Skip button will quickly take me through the usual long, obnoxious blocks of ads.

As far as their guide goes-they should steal DishNetworks design. Best (and easiest) I've used.

| Re: IMG Bugs and missing features FAQ The cable onscreen guide had programs listed either by time or by channel. I liked being able to see one channel at a time, presented vertically, with the programming listed chronologically- ie 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 9:00, 11:00 etc. On some channels you could see 12-16 hours of programming at a glance. Verizon uses by time, which calls for a lot of scrolling left and right to see what shows and movies are on a particular channel that day or days to come. The search function is nice, except when I keep searching for movies that aren't on. But, going to the cable network's website often allows you to see many days programming (or more) in advance, sometimes on a single page. I remember when HBO, Showtime ect. sent out monthly booklets listing all the movies and shows for each month. Sure was handy and made it easy to plan viewing and recording. Still, even though the guide takes some getting used to, I think it will be worth it. Anyway, I'm going to program my favorites so I can skip the home shopping channels and others I'm not interested in. But, hmmm! Why not his and hers favorites? We'd go for that. Mark F. | |

| I have mentioned this in other threads but now that this is sticky I would like to put my two cents worth in.
I came from Dish Network and two features they had would make the guide a lot easier and maybe solve some of the gripes.
1) They had a selection to just see what channels you were subscribed to without messing with favorites. That way you do not have build anything special. It also leaves you to use the favorites for what you really want to put in there. (as a subtext they also had the ability to have multiple favorites lists for different people). Also to get to different views of the guide (full, only subscribed, and favorites) you only had to hit the guide button multiple times to cycle through the view selections.
2) ALL programs and movies had the year they were created not just some of the movies as in the Verizon guide. That comes in handy when you are viewing repeats of shows to see how old they are.

For the life of me I can't understand why they didn't give us the ability to delete channels we don't subscribe to or care about. I'm not talking favorites just deleting channels.

| Re: IMG Bugs and missing features FAQ With most TVs we've had, you could add and/or delete channels. You could still call up the channel, if need be, by pressing the channel number on the remote, but during channel surfing, it didn't show up. But, that was with basic cable. The guide definitely takes some getting used to and is a bit quirky. But, once I get used to it, finding shows and movies I want to watch and/or record will be easier than now. Also, I was sure that the Pax and Retroplex networks weould be on FIOS, as they were on cable, but I can't find them. And, I can't find the TV Guide channel, just a pale version of it (the TV Guide Network?) with only sparse listings for local channels below reruns of Roseanne and Fresh Prince (Nick at Nite lite for those who only get the channels under 50?) The IMG says that the channel carries TV Guide programming, specials, Red Carpet interviews, etc, as we are used to seeing. Also, the TV Guide onscreen cable guide allowed you to change the colors of the guide. And, I do wish that we had the option of seeing listings by time OR by channel. Mark F. | |
