Waving Goodbye...

To all the good friends I made here I'm off to another ISP land. My account dies Sept 2.

I've been wrestling with phone line stability and, quite frankly, not interested in another round of getting my phone line straightened out for DSL. My 14db of noise margin is now running 10-12db on a good day and once a week or so has the expected conniptions. It started last May - after a storm of course. All this at 2016/384 safe mode.

Usenet looks like about the only reason to stay. Hope it works out for everyone so inclined.

Stay Well Everyone...

Damn. I feel like it's a changing of the guards going on. I cannot blame you or fault you a single bit, and it is sadly a testament to the problems the ILECs cause the CLECs/Resellers by not fixing obviously borked loops (another fine example of RBOC/ILEC feet dragging).

Take care and don't be a stranger. Post you super new speeds and make us jealous.

Regards,

Doctor Olds

Don't let my Comcast post fool you - they're on 3 month trial before they hit the roof for cost and lots of things may happen before then.

But of COURSE I can't resist...

Oh lord. I think Bill is (or was?) the only other guy who lived on the fringes like me and had DSL. If he's throwing in the towl, I see dark clouds on my horizon

Any clues as to which source you'll be getting your speed fix from ISP wise bill?

Sorry to see you go, Bill. With those trial speeds, I might be tempted too, except Comcrap has lousy usenet!
As has been said, don't be a stranger. You will be missed.

Hi H1. Be assured I like Comcast like you love Verizon. They're a transition so I'm not fighting any form of DSL switching time. I'm seriously looking at a wireless service or AT&T's low cost DSL package. I will downgrade the Comcast package if I keep it.

That speed test is deceptive due to "power boost" and won't sustain for much more than speed test time (is that milking the speed game for every drop or what?). Actually, browsing isn't all that snappier.

Rolfp and Starreem - thanks and I bet your services far exceed my DSL now.

DB, greener grass is a marketeer with an emerald paint bucket.

Doc, the forum will be in good hands.

How appropriate... a line of storms caused 50 resyncs of DSL and cable never flinched.

Hey, you are still among the living. Just because you are switching ISP's doesn't mean you are no longer welcome around here. Your ISP may change, but your knowledge doesn't. No reason we still can't keep you around for help. Don't be a stranger. Good luck with your Comcast.

I had good luck with comcast, as I never had elnk dsl even when I worked for them. I don't know what the state of the cable is in your neck of the woods but if the noise is that bad, and you are unable to get it fixed.. can't blame you a bit for ditching the DSL.

Folk are right though..don't be a stranger.

Hey SKJ. "No, I'm not really a customer but I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night..."?

I'll be here, missing the current Usenet arrangement. Guess who'll be doing some last minute downloading...

Hi Tra! I hope you're doing good. A nice tribute to the good people here that so many former official reps stick around. A good bunch.

Last Year

This Year To Present
I have to show the data - I guess the trouble really started in April. Some long seemingly good periods are actually syncing at a much lesser rate, like 1200k. I never thought I'd say 2006 was a good year.

I love storms. They make everything dance. From the plants, to the trees, and the lovely noise margins. Like the storm overhead right now that has me pulling margins to rival Bill's.

Hey, wasn't there an front page article some days back of how dial-up is the new broadband or something? Could always try that Bill

I didn't look in detail but most high-speed dialup is data compression based.

Take the ridiculous extreme...

A compression technique says send 1 billion character "A". So in the the blink of an eye you have "transferred" a billion character "A"s. Speed is 1GB+.

But pictures, like already compressed JPEG for example, never get any benefit.

Text, like HTML, is somewhere in between.

I sent something to a friend with dialup data compression - a 1MB text message of lines and lines of nothing but zeros. WOW did it work well. Attach a picture and it's back to snails.

Conclusion: Smoke and Mirrors.

Dial-up was the "new" broadband and we called it IDSN.

Wow, you had a bad 2003 also.

2004 July was an awesome time

2005 June was a switch from 3008k to 2016k safe mode
2003 was trying for 1536k but settling for 928k safe mode. That line sucked worse than I have now.

2004 was my favorite year: »Awright! 3008K!
The noise margin is misleading. Before July was going back and forth between 928k and 1536k. In July it was a previously unheard of 3008k.

2005 was when it last lost the good line. In June a storm knocked me from 3008k to 2016k safe mode where I had been since.

Sweet and not so sweet memories.
