| reply to jfmezei Re: Thomson SpeedTouch 5x6v6 FirmWare v6.2.H (v6.2.17.5)
Hummm...
I believe the internal Thomson ST5x6 registers are reliable enough to generate overall long-term performance graphs, if monitored externally. But... Should one need to capture some micro-events with near 100 % reliability then i guess this may be a more suitable approach:
 ST516 - Strange discovery, Bicephale, 2008-Oct-16
What about a classic LM567 tone detector circuit to watch the pilot tone?!... After all, 276 KHz is well within the chip's specifications (500 KHz). Such probe would only need to be loosely coupled and galvanic isolation would ensure that it's sufficiently safe for testing purposes.

| reply to Bicephale No, am just telnetting into the modem when needed. Never got around to setting up SNMP for it.
Spent considerable amount of time trying to build its config , removing all the bells and whistles since I just use it as a bridge modem and have since moved to more important matters because it hasn't given me problems. But when the ISP tells you you lost sync (from their point of view), you'd want to check if your modem also saw a loss of sync (which I suspect it did not). |

| reply to Bicephale I don't have DMT available.
I just wish DMT folks just documented the commands they send to the modem to get their information.
Because the St516 has a broken/useless syslog, it is hard for an extranal monotor to "catch" sporadic sync drops that last just a few seconds. |

| reply to jfmezei I don't have an ST on-line right now but i can suggest you to use the debug feature in 'DMT'. I don't recommend you trust the ST5x6 counters to be 100 % reliable, though: i believe a proper way to catch these events is thru external monitoring tools like 'DSL_StatScope' or 'DMT' in "Diagnosis" mode...

| reply to Bicephale Not sure if appropriate thread but...
Does anyone know a ommand line command for the Speedtouch 516 that would show how long the DSL carrier/sync has been on ? (or last time the carrier was lost).
adsl info doesn't provide this information. |

| reply to bobo22 Yes, we've seen error messages often enough about a device being unavailable but it was generally obvious that Thomson's upgrade wizard isn't always accurate with its interpretations of the actual events. Perhaps it's simply because of timeouts while waiting for something to happen which can't be verified directly before the user observes it himself... 'TFTPD32' would show you more accurate information as it's not hidden behind a "Wizard" front-end for dummies, in any case, and that's one method which corresponds more closely to what's widely used by many other brand/models anyway. |

| reply to Bicephale Is it normal that during the upgrade (flashing), the Wizards pops up and says that the modem is not recognized?
Here's how it happened :
While flashing, the power led blinks red/green and when it says that it's not recognized, the modem seems to restart and the firmware seems to have been flashed successfully.
Checked with the Wizard Tool and it reports the new firmware version and says that it's operational. I also have no problem connecting to the internet.
At first, I was spooked because I thought the modem was going to get bricked, but it works fine!
Any ideas why the wizard tool didn't complete? |

| reply to taytong888 Hi Taytong888,
This is a router issue which this thread can't help you with, it's a classic that keeps popping up every few months since the ST5x6 frenzy, a few years ago, so it shouldn't be hard to find some help around... Possibly over here, for example:

1 edit | reply to Bicephale Hello Bicephale,
I just set up Speedtouch 516v6 modem for the first time ever. Set it up in Bridge Mode because it is in front of a router, for a PPPoE connection. Did not change default firmware.
Could you please help me set up DMT tool v 7.35?
When I open DMT, I typed in IP=192.168.1.1 (router) or 192.168.1.112 (PC connected to router) and Port 23. Auto connect when startup. User: Administrator. Password: (Left blank). Clicked Connect button.
Error message:"Connection establishment failed. There's no server running on given port or won't answer". I did temporarily disable the firewall before hand.
Thanks in advance. |

In case i failed to make myself clear enough, the filenames in cyan or red are those of your actual configuration files:

| reply to Madwand Hi,
The 6.1.4.6 UK version was made 'DMT'-hostile but it will still work with it. As proof, this animated .GIF made of successive captures:

If your problem is with the VPI/VCI pair then just edit the setup files mentioned previously in this thread. If you must insist to try an older FirmWare then i suppose this post may suit you better:

Thomson SpeedTouch 5x6 CleanUp via FTP |
Hi,
Your configuration files might be corrupted... You can make sure they are gone before you invoke the wizard by proceeding as i've shown above. One of these URLs should launch whatever you've defined as your default FTP application:
ftp://10.0.0.138/dl/ ftp://speedtouch.lan/dl/ ftp://dsldevice.lan/dl/ ftp://192.168.1.254/dl/
Starting from there, if you still can get the MoDem connected i'd check the VPI/VCP pairs and use this GUI resource as a 1st test:
Home > Broadband Connection > Internet Services > Connectivity Check
That's pretty much basic. If you can't get any satisfying feedback from you MoDem/Router at this stage then the TelNet CLI bible is going to be your next stop, i suppose... |

| reply to peter_m Good for you! Sorry but i won't rewrite my reply, though...
There are eleven International FirmWares available from the 14th link of the initial post (which has grown old), two more if you don't pay attention to that. A google search for the "SpeedTouch ZZQIAA" string would have got you even more:
'ZZQIAA#.###' Int'l:
5.3.2.6 5.3.3.4 5.4.0.14 6.1.0.5 6.2.15.5 6.2.16.3 6.2.17.5 6.2.29.2 7.2.0.8 7.4.1.7 7.4.3.2
'ZZQIAA#.###' Deutsch:
5.4.4.1 6.1.9.6
'ZZQIAA#.###' (Bonus):
»download.modem-help.co.uk/mfcs-A···irmware/ 6.1.4.6 8.2.1.5 8.2.2.?
Good luck finding out which works best for you!!!
