| reply to SvS SvS,
One other thing that NIS 2008 breaks is Windows Live Messenger.
Once you install 2008 Live Messenger will not be able to log-in.
So you are force to remove NIS 2008 or use the WEB version of messenger. Yuk!
I honestly think this is a combination of bad programming from both sides M$ and Norton, but you have to wonder if they even test this stuff anymore. "The programmer said it was working so box it and ship it".
I just love Vista - "The Devil made me say it" honest. |

My upgrade from NIS2007 to NIS2008 with remaining subscriptions on NIS2007, was very smooth and newer interface looks kinda cool. They have a different add-on pack for NIS2008 and its installation was pretty smooth too. But wait-a-minute, where is the ad-blocking option? Can't believe they removed it. This is a real bummer for me.
I am going to remove NIS2008 and get back to NIS2007, if there is no ad-block in it. Yes, it is true that it is no longer there (don't know why). -- Ant @ The Ant Farm: »antfarm.ma.cx ... 3 edits | reply to bk9410 Installing NAV 2008 over 2007---Works fine!
I purchased NAV 2008 and downloaded the installer. Before I could uninstall NAV2007 or use the Norton removal tool, the installer started automatically. (Win XP PRO SP2 all updates.) I did turn off auto protect, however.
It took a few minutes, and rebooted.
Everything went well, after the reboot the installation finished and installed my key and also in my Norton account. Was not necessary to uninstall NAV 2007. I believe the installer does that before it installs the 2008 product.
Note: It also started the new subscription on the day my old one expired... a few days after the install: so I did not lose any time on the new account
BTW, I made a CD of the installer files and a text file that contains my product key. I also copied the installer files and the key text from the documents and settings file (all users Symantec temporary)to a utilities install folder for an additional backup. |

said by antdude Or just run luall via Windows' Run. This works. But using a shortcut has the advantage that you can easily run LU with elevated rights (on Vista with UAC enabled).
LU 3.4 apparently takes care this for the 2008 product line but (as usual) there are issues with other Symantec products. The latest Ghost update (12.0 to 12.01), for example, will not install on Vista with UAC enabled unless LU is run with elevated rights. Makes me wonder if patches and LiveUpdates are really tested before they are dropped onto the user. |

And Interactive Mode does not work in the 2008 version even if it is selected. LiveUpdate in the 2008 products works the same way it did in previous versions, there is just one difference - when LiveUpdate is started from the NIS/NAV UI or the start menu shortcut found in the NIS/NAV program group a different executable is called which displays a new UI for LiveUpdate. To get the old behaviour back, create a shortcut to LUALL.EXE (found in the C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate folder, or where ever this may be installed on your system) and use this instead. Or just run luall via Windows' Run. -- Ant @ The Ant Farm: »antfarm.ma.cx ... Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. Use the forum (I check often)! @poundhost.com | reply to SvS SvS you are right, thank you, that worked. Symantec in their quest to make a more simple UI I suppose. |

| reply to nunsuperior In the 2007 version when I selected to run LiveUpdate an Options selection appeared on the upper left side of the LiveUpdate screen (in Interactive Mode). This has been removed from the 2008 version. The only way to access the Options now is from Control Panel (classic view by the way).
And Interactive Mode does not work in the 2008 version even if it is selected. With Interactive Mode in 2007 versions you had the ability to see and select what you wanted to download. In the 2008 version with Interactive Mode selected, it acts as if it is in Express mode (where it is all automatic). |

| reply to zteardrop I noticed this comment in the PC Mag review:
"NIS or NAV users with a current subscription will receive the updates automatically."
I take this to mean that my NIS 2007 will automatically be updated to NIS 2008. Does this sound correct? |

@poundhost.com
| reply to zteardrop Symantec seems to have dumbed down the 2008 versions... I used to be able to set how often in minutes it would check for updates in the 2007 versions, but this feature is apparently gone in 2008 verions. Am I wrong on this? And how often in minutes do the 2008 versions check in for updates? |

from: antdude
| reply to bk9410 The free upgrade is possible only with products starting from 2006 and onwards. If you ever try this with 2005 and older versions of Norton products, you will need to purchase the upgrade.
Here is an example.
NIS 2006 or NIS 2007 upgrade to NIS 2008 is free of cost.
NIS 2005 or NIS 2004 upgrade is not free of cost and you need to purchase an upgrade. |
|
  Unease
@veritas.com | reply to Venkat That's correct. However, the other criteria is that you can upgrade only to the product type that you have installed. For example: NAV 07 to NAV 08 and NIS 07 to NIS 08. |
|
  Venkat
@net.in | reply to bk9410 You can upgrade your Norton 2006 or 2007 product to 2008 absolutely free of cost. The only criteria is that you need to have an active subscription. |

Yahman Premium join:2002-11-23 Nepean, ON | reply to bk9410 If you have a valid NIS2007 key can you download and upgrade to 2008 like you could last year going from 2006 to 2007?
If so does anyone have the link to the download ? So far I can't find it.
thanks, |
