What it is is the activation in msconfig of c:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007\AAWTray.exe
I just changed the name of the .exe file and rebooted. Now the icon is gone. Of course, I could have just unselected the checkbox in msconfig.
I don't know what the service does when it's running, but killing off the entire service rather than just the execution of the tray icon makes more sense to me.

I left the service running and just used Windows Explorer to c:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware 2007\AAWTray.exe and then changed the .exe file to changed_AAWTray.exe.
Rebooted and the unusable icon was gone.

3. Identification of NOTHING -- but cookies for newegg and such -- that, while I set to ignore, are obviously IMHO too tight and potentially destructive for most users -- feel good only?
4. More limitations for scans on free version previous versions -- an upgrade?
5. NO identification of MRUs versus previous version -- again an upgrade?
In short a program that only offers Vista compatability, identifies nothing more useful than the previous version, is more crippled as to features. Old version never found anything, suspect this one will not either.
Bottom line -- time to remove, do not even go back to previous version! Lavasoft, I suspect your days are numbered -- given this "reduction" in capability what makes you think I would even consider a paid upgrade! | |

I was having too many problems with AAW...updates, scans etc..so I thought there are too many other free spyware programs out there to put up with this.
I like SuperAntispyware so far. Real-time protection and light on resources. Updates almost daily.

| The start up registry key for the tray icon is created every time Ad-Aware starts up irrespective of whether the aawservice is set to manual or automatic startup. This service doesn't need to be running all the time if you have the free version, and you are running as Administrator, so, as has been said, you can go into services (Start, Run, type services.msc), stop the aawservice and set its startup type to manual. Ad-Aware will start the service when you open the program but, after closing Adaware, the service will continue to run.
To prevent the tray icon from appearing at startup, and to stop the aawservice after closing Ad-Aware, I've made a small batch file which automatically runs a reg file
To create the reg file, copy and paste the following into Notepad and save it as AdawareDeleteStart.reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AAWTray"=-
Place the reg file directly into your C Drive. This reg file deletes the tray icon startup key but don't run it yet.
Copy and paste the following into Notepad and save it as Adaware 2007.bat
"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\Ad-Aware2007.exe"
net stop aawservice
regedit.exe /s C:\AdawareDeleteStart.reg
This bat file starts Ad-Aware normally. As Adaware starts, it will start the aawservice and recreate the startup registry key for the tray icon (if it has been previously deleted). When you close Ad-Aware, the bat file will stop the aawservice and the startup tray icon registry key will be deleted automatically. (The /s switch means you are not asked for confirmation.)
To prevent the command window appearing every time you open the bat file, create a shortcut to it and in Properties set the shortcut to run Minimized.
To apply the Ad-Aware icon to the shortcut, just right click the shortcut, go to Properties, Change Icon, and browse to the Ad-Aware exe file in the Lavasoft folder.
If you don't want to mess about with the aawservice you can just create the reg file. Run Ad-Aware normally and, after closing it, double click the reg file to remove the startup tray icon registry key. Note : the startup registry key for the tray icon will be recreated when you open Ad-Aware the next time so you would need to run the reg file every time you close Ad-Aware. The bat file above will run the reg file automatically.
I've tested the above on XP and vista and missed Grey's Anatomy in doing so. Some good has come of it then. | |

After the latest program update (around 3pm UK time) the aawservice no longer recreates the startup key for the tray icon. (At least it doesn't on the 3 XP systems I updated.) Did you check the startup key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\"AAWTray"? Was it still there?
Did you reboot to see if the tray icon appeared upon restart? | |
