A Santa hat tutorial for PSP 7...

Since several people have asked about this, I'll show you how I do it. Since Mark was one of the folks who asked, I'm using his photo as an example.

First I did a search on Google to find a Santa hat:

(You can find lots of others there too.)

It's a little too large for your picture, so I used image, re-size to make it smaller.

I used 63% of original; you'll just have to play with percentages until it looks right.

Next you want to get rid of the background....since this one is solid white it's pretty easy. Take the magic wand tool (I have it set with a tolerance of 17...you might have to play around with those settings too, depending on your background) and click anywhere on the background.

As you can see, there is still a little white area around the hat. To get rid of that, Click on Selections in the menu, then modify, expand:

This little box will pop up:

I expanded the selection by two pixels; you'll just have to use your best judgement. Here's the result:

Use the selection menu again, and choose "invert selection". Only the hat will be selected now. Click on Edit, then "copy" in the menu. Click on the photo you want to place the hat in and click Edit, paste as new layer.

Use the "Move" tool to place the hat where you want it.

I used Image, "rotate" the change the angle a little:

Now just save the image as a .gif or .jpg and you're done!

Gee TT, you made it seem pretty easy with those directions.
I'm off to try and put a hat on a picture of my son!:)

I just got the trial version of PSP and all these tutorials are very helpful. I didn't know about the "expand' feature. It sure saves on time and the nerves. I am not sure that 30 days is enough time to learn it or not though. Thanks for all the help you folks give us "dummies".

The 'expand' feature is new to me too. Learn something new everyday. Thanks

Great work tiggerstales. If we get more tutorials like this we can start a book. This post needs to be at the top of the forum.

If you right click on the toolbar, and than click on customize, you can add the actions that you use a lot to the toolbar. I use invert selection, and add raster layer very often, so I put them on my toolbar so I can do it in one click.
