I have looked at Kaspersky and I like some of the features but the index problem that people have talked about has me worried. I have also has avast recommended to me and like some of the features there as well. I am not worried about cost. And I trust the firewall built into the DD-WRT firmware running on my WRT54GS v1.1 router. As for surfing the web I am very careful about the sites that I go to and only go to know safe sites that I have frequented for years and never had a problem with those sites. I also know not to open emails from unknown sorces as I work in a IT help desk. I know there have been issues with symantic products that I have had to deal with in the past and with trend micro which my company uses and I think is garbage.....

Again, the problems that are talked about with Kaspersky are experienced by a very small number of users. Yes, they have experienced the problems that they complain about, but most of us have not.
But if you do not want to trial Kaspersky, then go for some of the others. If I were to add another to the ones I mentioned it would be AVGAM or AVGIS. There are some good prices around on them, and their detection is very good, as evidenced by the AV Comparatives tests.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I recommend either Avast (my favorite freebie) or Avira for the free ones. However, most folks I personally know use AVG free if they do not use the application that came on the computer.

Microsoft has slapped Kaspersky down for their recklessness regarding ISwift and the use of Object Identifiers. Kaspersky's response has been to write an obscure tech support article. They have abandoned those of us who have the problem permanently even though we may have uninstalled KAV a year ago. I don't believe the question anyone considering getting KAV should be in regards to how large or small the number of users with the chkdsk problem is. Rather, the question you should ask yourself is "Do I want to buy software from a company that acts recklessly when developing its software (twice now...not just the ISwift problem but before that the ADS problem with KAV 2005) and doesn't not act in a responsible manner to acknowledge and help those who suffer because of the company's poor judgement but instead abandons them"?
This is no longer a specific support issue that affects some but not others. This, properly seen, is an ethical issue and a philosophical one. The potential buyer needs to ask themselves if they want to get involved with a reckless, arrogant company that will behave in a less than acceptable manner when confronted with the results of their recklessness.

I agree with the other posters that you need to do some trials to see what works best on your computer. I use Avira premium and it just had an upgrade. If cost is not a problem, when you trial Avira, I suggest you do the trial of the Premium Security Suite. The new version has added an HTTP web scanner that a lot of users really like. That is only in the Suite. The Personal Premium version that i use and the free version do not have it. I don't mind because I personally find web scanner redundant so I don't care that this feature is not in the Personal Premium version. But many folks rave about Kaspersky's and NOD32's web scanners so that is why I suggest, if price is not an issue, that you trial Avira Premium Security Suite.
You will need to join the Avira support forum to get a trial key (I hope that gets changed soon as I don't think one should have to join a forum in order to do a trial of an AV product) and there is a sticky there for instructions on contacting via IM one of the Avira workers to get the trial key.
