New Franklin CDU-680 Modem Review

Sprint is working with the Franklin some what. You must ask for level 2 tech support for any simple issues you have. The tech I talked to was great, but didnt have any information on this modem. They are sending you directly to Franklin for any in depth info. Franklins number is 800-959-3558 Also the engineer from Franklin is sending me all the information today via email for this modem. I will post it as soon as I get it.

Now the connection manager looks exactly the same as the Sierra's but says Franklin. To get into the modem HA settings its a bit different.

You have to close up the connection manager so the incoming and outgoing is minimized and put your mouse on the + sign then use the shift key and type either ##DATA ##DEBUG or ##RNT depending on what you need to do.

Sorry but Im going to have to continue with other posts as I cannot get the pictures where I need/what them to be.

If you make any changes in the modem settings it will hang for about 2 mins saying to insert your modem. It will finally clear.

Make sure you uninstall ANY other modem software you have installed. I couldnt figure out why my upload speeds would either stop or post as above LOL

I havent found a way yet to DR TCP to find a network adapter for this modem. I'll post when I do. But I did get good results from the "tweak" test here a BBR.

Speeds are different at each site, but latency is not all over the board anymore. Seems to stay between 90-110

Once I get the registry changed I will post speeds again.

Franklin just sent me some info and a link that explains the modem a bit more.

These are my speeds again after the registry edit I used with the sierra and it worked well.

Run Regedit, then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters

Add "DefaultSendWindow" (no quotes) as a DWORD and I enter 78000 in HEX as the value. You must restart your computer for it to be added.

My download speeds are off a bit still (usually 1050-1200)as I cannot use Dr TCP to get the settings I had with the Sierra.

Thanks blazintails for the first look at the CDU680 on this forum. I think I am going to give EVDO a try using this modem.

What info did Franklin send you besides the link?

Re: New Franklin CDU-680 Modem Review

Thank you both for the replies.

Franklin just sent me the link I posted above and the ##DATA ##RTN and ##DEBUG lol that was it.

And here the way the SR Engineer spoke he was gonna send me some good info.

One thing I have found is I'am getting a better dBm than I did with the Sierra.

That's interesting. Millenicom customer service three times now have told me "Never change the HA" as it will cause problems. I'm confused on the issue.

That's strange since 3 different Millenicom reps have told me the same thing on the phone. Actually though does changing it really make a difference if you are static and not traveling around?

Sptint speed tests:

Atlanta:

Chicago:

Ft. Worth:

I think if I relocate the Franklin to a better spot then the upload would be a little better. Since you change your HA settings are your speeds a lot better than mine? If they are I will persue getting the info from Millenicom or Franklin.

I wish they had told me that before I changed it! Changing the values back to 0.0.0.0 doesn't work either!

I have changed my HA many times when I travel throughout the country. It has not been a problem for me. What is your specific issue?

When it tries to connect, I see "Connecting..." and then it just times out, and reverts back to "Disconnected". This happened just after changing the "Home Address" from 0.0.0.0 to an area4 value, and rebooting. Of course there's clearly a signal, since there's a green light and it was working right up until the change. Also, if I go into ##DEBUG, I can see two EVDO towers, and four 1xRTT towers. When I restore the HA back to 0.0.0.0, it still fails.

So I'm offline now. Millenicom tech support wasn't able to help (yet.. I'm waiting for a return call).

Re: New Franklin CDU-680 Modem Review

I know that when I've done HA changes after it goes from "connected" back to "disconnected" you have to wait a while.
You will see a window pop up with the Franklin folder in it (close that), then the same window again a little later. Close that, and you "should" be able to connect. At least that's how it worked for me. But you do have to wait for those windows first.

In the course of rebooting the device, I did notice that the file manager for the mass storage would popup a couple times over the period of 30-60 seconds. And I let it run its course before trying to connect. But even after disconnecting the device, and running it on another machine, it still fails to connect. The connection used to be pretty immediate, so I know when it takes a few minutes something is wrong. I still let it take up the time, and eventually the status goes to "disconnected".

so you don't have any HA values at all in ##DATA? or it just won't save the one's you put in?

Right now I just want my original functionality back, so I have it set back to the original values:

Home Address: 0.0.0.0
Primary HA: 68.28.49.76
Secondary HA: 68.28.57.76

Changing the first value is what got me into trouble. I should have never touched "Home Address".

[EDIT] For the record, it appears that changing the first HA value has the effect of de-activating a device even if the value is restored. After factory reset in the ##RTN dialog, and reactivating, functionality is restored.

Re: New Franklin CDU-680 Modem Review

When you saw that tweaks about the modem, you didnt see the strings that showed primary and secondary HA's?

But because of your mishaps, Im sure Hitman will change the directions so another person wont change the HA 00000's

Glad Jim helped you to get it all sorted out.

I did. I saw a dialog box identical to the ##DATA screen shot in the 2nd post. I changed the first HA field on the form, which I should have left as 0.0.0.0. I didn't realize it was only the primary and secondary HA that I needed to change.

Your first HA line should be all zeros. NEVER CHANGE THIS LINE.

Since you are in Indiana, use the Chicago HA 68.28.145.76 as your HA_1 and use the KC HA 68.28.81.76 as the secondary.

You may have to go thru the whole re-activation process again, so you'll also need your MDN number, MSID number, and MSL number. If you are with Millenicom, call support and they'll give these to you.

This post was very useful to me and I thank you for the information. I contacted support at 3GStore and they provided me with the SPC. I am now experimenting with different HAs and have obtained some good results.

The mobile connection has replaced DSL for me. The last couple of days I've been getting around 2200+ download and 400+ upload. Anyway, thanks again.

I emailed Millenicom yesterday asking for my MSL and told them why I wanted it (to change HA) and they responded really fast. No hassle.

There is also one more function to this modem that has not been mentioned alot here.

##GPS

The modem *must* be disconnected to use this feature. If you have Google Earth or similar applications that this modem supports, you can use that mapping software. It's a very cool feature.

This unit has a real GPS receiver in it. It also has a hidden GPS Antenna Connector on the back of the modem under the little circle. There are 3 little circles on the back of the modem. The GPS ANT is under the biggest one.

I love my CDU680!

I don't think you are supposed to change the HA on the line that says all zeros - just the primary and secondary lines. Be sure to write down the original values before changing anything!

Actually that won't save someone in this case. If I had any trouble remembering 0.0.0.0, I also had a screen capture of the configuration. Restoring the configuration to original values was useless, because the device actually deactivated. I had to fix it by doing a factory reset, and /activating/.

Here's two more little tidbits of info for those of you who use the Franklin in conjunction with the MBR-400 Router sold by Millenicom, but made by assent wireless.

1. Although the router interface doesn't have much in the way of modem control, you can remove the CDU from the MBR and plug the CDU into a desktop or laptop that already has the desktop connection manager installed, then go into the ##DATA entry and reconfigure whatever you feel brave enough to try! You can reset the HA's amongst other useful adjustments. Once you finish the reconfig it gets saved to the device and these settings will be effective when you put the device back into the router.

2. The intermittent disconnecting accompanied by overheating of the Franklin seems to be just that; intermittent and not all devices do it. I suspect that if enough of this is reported, the Millenicom people might exert a bit of pressure on Franklin to replace those devices under recall.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, since mine seems to stay connected, goes in and out of dormant mode (blue solid - blue flashing) correctly, and my signal light has been very constant at flashing green, indicating good signal. If I plug the device into my laptop for a signal level check it's generally in the 81dBm range, sometimes it hits -79, sometimes down to -83. I've changed my HA from US west coast to Atlanta and Chicago and that boosted speeds. I understand KC is also a good choice for HA. My speeds are considerably better than when I used the Sierra Aircard.

Another thing about the Franklin CDU-680.

You can set the unit in connection manager to only use EVDO, but there is a place in ##DATA to set it under the modem tab, to only let it use EVDO.

So, if it is dropping off into 1xRRT while it is in the router, you need to use ##DATA while the modem is connected to the computer to set it to EVDO only.

^..^

Re: New Franklin CDU-680 Modem Review

Interesting about the EVDO only settings. Clearly the connection manager prevails over the router settings, as far as the 'modem' is concerned.

I petitioned Eddie at assent wireless to put the ##DATA functions inside the router interface but he couldn't say yes or no, but he did like the idea.
