| capping, so evil...
>WildBlue does cap their users, but, like HughesNet, calls >such caps their "fair access policy" or FAP(pdf). The cap is >a rolling thirty day limit on data use that varies by tier, >but if exceeded results in the customer's broadband >connection being throttled to 128kbps/28kbps. -------------------

·RoadRunner Cable
| Well you have to remember this, satellite is a totally different beast from cable. In cable it is a closed system that can use any of the available spectrum ranging from 0-750MHz or more depending on the cable plant's configuration. If they need extra capacity they can split nodes or lay new cable. Satellite on the other hand is a open system meaning its broadcast over the air and uses a much smaller part of the spectrum. I would guess around 100-200Mhz of bandwidth. This same signal is broadcast over the entire country meaning it has a single data pipe to move all that information through for everyone not 50-300 homes like cable. So that is why they have to institute caps to insure that their is enough available bandwidth for everyone. Yeah I know that sucks but hey that's physics for ya. |
