My father wants to donate his old Toyota Corolla 1991 so he can add it to his tax-cuts or something. Anyone has information on how this works?
Also he doesn't know where he can go and donate it etc.

4 edits | reply to RobNyc I donated a 1993 Grand Am to charity cars a few years ago. As seen on NBC,CBS..bla bla bla. Below are quotes from the site »www.800charitycars.org/?gclid=CK···odyRCvLg
"The first and only national charity of its kind that provides donated vehicles free of charge to struggling families willing to work and become self-sufficient, tax-paying members of the community"
"Under the old rules, when you donated a vehicle to a charity, you could value the donation at the fair market value. This year, if you donate a vehicle to charity, you are limited to the sales price if the vehicle is sold, unless the charity uses the vehicle in its mission. If Charity Cars provides your vehicle to a struggling family, then you can still deduct the full fair market value. According to the IRS, the donor, not the recipient charity, must determine the Fair market value which the IRS describes as the price that a willing buyer and a willing seller would agree to if neither were pressured to do so. Assistance with vehicle values can be found at www.kbb.com Kelly Blue Books website. (Use private party value)"
They sent a Local auction Co. over to pick up my car. The car went to auction and sold for $35. I thought I was doing the right thing but was very disappointed in the way the whole thing worked. When I was doing my tax's I added $500 as a test to see if it would do anything for me. It didn't mean anything as far as a tax wright off. It isn't worth it with a car that old. I would sell it, give it away or junk it before I do that again!
EDIT: The car was in good condition had 65,000 miles on it and only needed tires and brakes. So maybe they took the lousy $35 and someone who picked up the car at auction sold it and made a few dollars! I was not looking for a tax break and the idea of someone needy getting the car sounded appealing to me. I was very disappointed in the end.

| reply to RobNyc A few years ago, donating a car yielded great tax return benefits. Everyone was doing it and it was the "in" thing to do. The Feds quickly caught on and closed out all the loop holes that made donating a car worthwhile as a tax advantage.
If your father wants to do it out of the goodness of his heart, he can probably stop at H&R block and ask them for the paprwork/handouts on doing or contact a tax accountant. Or, if it runs....Print out an ad and go post it at the local college.

| reply to RobNyc I recently donated a vehicle to the American Foundation for the Blind through Cars4Charities. I've been a long time supporter of AFB and have also volunteered for them. I can honestly say that it is a fine and upstanding organization.
I called up the 800# that was given to me and someone came to my house two days later to pick up the vehicle. They then sent me paperwork in the mail. (It was interesting, though. They valued the vehicle at the maximum the blue book allowed. They even quoted more options than were actually in the vehicle.)
Here's the link to 'em... They support other organizations, too. I just picked AFB because of my affiliation with them. »www.cars4charities.org/ |

Well actually I'm not sure if my father wants to donate it or does he knows what are the uses if he donate it. But I'm guessing is mostly for the tax interest. |

| reply to RobNyc I have donated one in 1995 to these guys:
The Jewish Heritage For The Blind 1 800 2 DONATE »www.jhbinternational.org
1655 E 24th St Brooklyn, NY , 11229-2401 Phone: 718-338-4999 FAX: 718-338-0653
Another one in 1998 and one in 2001 to this organization:
Heritage for the Blind 2920 Avenue R Suite #191 Brooklyn, NY 1129 1 800 2 DONATE ; 1800 236 6283
(address might have changed-the phones still good).
Their web page »www.cardonation.com resolves to this interesting page : »www.taxdeduction.com
I suggest the Heritage for the Blind because they sent me a Official Tax Receipt (although these two organisations might be one and the same :notice the common toll free number).
A tow truck came after a few days, picked up the car gave me a receipt and after a while I received a letter from them regarding the tax write off.
I got the full wholesale value on all cars as an tax-deduct in all those years. -- Give the world changes at a pace it can absorb. |
