| ISDN questions
I'm a savvy Internet user who doesn't have DSL or cable coverage out where I live so I'm considering getting an ISDN connection so I can get something faster than analog modems. I do have a number of questions to ask regarding ISDN:
1. Verizon is my phone provider here in Cambridge, NY and they are supposed to provide ISDN phone lines for residential areas. Can I get an ISDN line here in Cambridge since I live 5 miles out from the village? My number is 518-677-XXXX.
2. I've heard that Verizon supplies equipment for ISDN Internet connections. Is this true? If not, where can I get the necessary equipment for an ISDN Internet connection?
3. For a provider, I'm considering wanting to get dedicated service off of PCStarNet, which is $100 per month, once I get an ISDN phone line and the equipment for a connection. Is this ISP worth subscribing to? |

| ISDN "has no distance limits", supposedly. My parents are 15 miles out of town and have it and I'm 7 and have it. From verizon you want voisdn, I think.
I doubt verizon supplies the equipment. I've never heard of that before. Ebay is your best bet. I have Cisco 804s (me, my parents, my uncle) that I take care of, and its all I'll use. Netgears are often recommended as well as Netopia. Think sub-$50 shipped.
For an ISP you can spend $100/mo. if you want to... I spend $100/year though. I use localnet.com and they've been perfect (for me). Not all numbers support both channels, but both exchanges I use do just fine. You have to try it to see. I stay on 24x7 for weeks at a time. Others have used yahoo, earthlink, peoplepc etc., though some with limitations. |

| reply to ggultra2764 Have you looked around for a Wireless provider? Seems like NY state would have that.
Onelasvegas has a couple of listings for cambridge, ny. I know in my area the stuff listed on there is usually out of date, but it is a place to start.

Good luck.

| Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I've checked with every local wireless Internet provider I know of in this area which was listed on the link and their coverage doesn't extend out to where I live. The nearest one, Hudson Valley Wireless, only provides coverage for the village and any road that goes out up north. I'm about 2-3 miles out of their coverage range right now.
What about wireless Internet through cell phones? I've heard that outside of large metropolitan areas, the bandwidth of cell phones used for Internet connections is comparable to speeds through ISDN connections. |

I've heard that outside of large metropolitan areas, the bandwidth of cell phones used for Internet connections is comparable to speeds through ISDN connections. Alltel is great for that. a $25 adder to your phone gets you unlimited "tethering". If you have 1x (digital), then it is 144k. If you have EVDO, supposedly it is up in the 2M range, I think. Regardless, you have fairly high latency. Signal is quite important with EVDO for speeds as well. I am looking into an amp to get decent enough signal for some speeds at my house. Time........need more time.............. |

| Three questions:
1. Is it possible to use Alltel Web services to browse any Web site and download any type of file like Sprint (which I have no coverage for in my area)? If the company's terms of Internet use are similar to Verizon, then I might have some issues with using it.
2. I can't seem to find a map of coverage for Alltel's Internet coverage with cell phones on their site. Know of a site that may have that information?
3. I can't seem to find a nearby Alltel store in my area within their site's store database. Would calling them be a good bet if I can get the phone mailed to me? |

I find it hard to believe that they don't offer ISDN. I would not find it hard to believe that the consumer sales side knows nothing about it, however. |

| I also spoke to their business sales side. They had no regular connection and they asked if getting a T1 connection would be possible. But that is too costly of an option for me to consider.
@splitpair: I've already looked into DSL as an option. There are no providers that have coverage out in my area. Right now, I'm trying to see if getting a wireless connection would be an option for me. |

Not DSL IDSL which is based on ISDN technology as such it can be provisioned out of a remote terminal by installing a BRI channel unit. A number of CLEC's offer it maybe one in your area does as well. The speed is only 144 but it is a nailed up connection (always on).

| I now expert, but I think you would be cutting yourself a little short in using an ISDN modem for ISDL. I have used a Cisco 804 ISDL modem for ISDN. It isn't dsl, despite it's name. AFAIK, the main difference between ISDN and ISDL is that ISDL uses the control channel as well as the 2 B channels for data. |

Hell you probably could even rent the modem for a small fee too boot... 144kbps always on connection beats the fire outta 128kbps 200 hours a month total, which at 2 channels to make the 128k, means your just getting 100 hours of useage at that speed... Rediculas.. Does isdn cost ATT that much or something? Please excuse my ignorance on this matter |

| said by decifal : Does isdn cost ATT that much or something? Please excuse my ignorance on this matter ISDN is a switch based technology which requires the switch owner to have the software in the switch and pay a per seat license from the switch manufacturer to offer the service through that switch.
