| [TWC] spyware invasion
I have a dumby question for anyone who can help me... My daughter-in-law computer xp started getting pop-ups, "alert!!! "invasions, your computer is vulnerable to attack"..or something like that.it instructed her to download immediately ...she panicked and hit the button...not long after her computer was under a major attack as close as we can figure she had attacks every 3 seconds...she could not even log on to nortons or any other anti-spyware site for help...finally she took it to a computer guy who removed the old system then reinstalled her win xp...in the shop it worked fine..on their internet(verizon) it also was fine...she took it home hooked up to TWC...and bam...all the pop up came again... Now the question whos at at fault??? TWC says its the computer at fault....(After the guy on the phone was unable to get to the bottom) Computer guy says it TWC cable system...... I am not well versed in computers...so i dont understand alot of computer terms... Please just as simple as possible or some help with what to do??? |

This computer guy sounds like a crock. Did you see first hand for yourself IN the computer shop that it ran fine? Being connected to any given network won't install or throw pop ups at you. -- BlockNews.Net- Quality Usenet Block And Unlimited Accounts |

| reply to stuck on stupid mba is probably right. Your daugher-in-law's computer is infected. Also, if the computer guy reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows from the original CD that came with the computer, then it should have been clean. Apparently, it was not clean.
Is your daugher-in-law's computer stand-alone, the only computer in her house and the only one connected to the cable? If not, then the computer could have been re-infected by another connected to the same local network. That would not have been TWC's fault, either.
You might try downloading from this site:
This is Spybot-S&D, a free anti-spyware program. Save the download to your hard drive rather than opening and installing it. You can copy the download to a CD-R and take it to your daughter-in-law's computer. You can run the downloaded program there and it will attempt to install Spybot on her system. If you then run a scan, Spybot _may_ be able to remove whatever has infected her system. I make no guarantees. There are other solutions out there, and the suggestion by "mba" to Google "Trojan-spy" is good. If Spybot doesn't do the trick, something else may work. -- No one is always right or always wrong, unfortunately. |

1 edit | reply to stuck on stupid The girl is at fault, i recommend she gets all XP updates and removes the firewall. Then install something like comodo, kerio, zonealarm firewall + spybot like the guy above me said. Spyware blaster, spyware terminator, spyware doctor etc. Also Windows defender from MS themselves (i know)
Though you don't really need them if you have safe browsing habbits and don't forget Firefox or Opera. |

| You are so right. Safe browsing habits are the best defense, but too many people don't use caution on the web. That's why all these security products have a market. Before the web, there were boot sector viruses that traveled from one computer to another via sneaker net. The safe practice then was to avoid putting strange floppies into your drive, and to write-protect any floppy that you carried to another computer. It was a simpler world, but computers still got infected. |

I'd get a new computer guy.

| reply to stuckonstupid Just because it worked fine in this person's shop on his Verizon line doesn't mean she is free and clear. There are some underlying problems this "computer guy" is not seeing or wanting to dig a bit deeper to fix. He probably just did a recover install and did not reformat the drive, thereby leaving the original problem there. You need to invest in a good router and put it between the cable modem and computer. And find someone else to look at that computer. Someone who is reputable and knows what they are doing. If I knew you lived in my area, I would offer to look at and get it fixed the correct way. -- PROUD TO BE THE DIRECTOR OF THE CRUNCHENSTEIN ASSOCIATION AND THE HOST OF CRUNCHENSTEIN #2 |

| reply to stuck on stupid This sounds very much like the computer may be infected with Vundo or Smitfraud (among other things) and the computer guy may not know how to completely remove those.
