A thing I had not said: in final point, the modem was not connected to the box with WinXP but to an other box acting as my LAN router, under Linux. This box was acting as PPPoE client (modem in Bridge mode) and still acting as DHCP server for my LAN.
I reconfigured it so that the modem now act as a DHCP server for my router-box and use it's own PPPoE client. Unfortunately, that does not seem to reduce my ping...
On the router-box, all three eth are back in DHCP. I don't know if the translation of the MTU from 1500 to 1492 (now made by the modem) is the problem, but it was the same problem when the translation was made by the router-box on eth1 (ppp0 over it).
Even when there's no traffic, my ping to my isp-gateway (the first hop in a traceroute) is never below 65ms when, it seem, there is DHCP in the setup...
Changing the MTU from 1500 to 1492 for all my eth in my router-box do not result in any improvement...
Edit: Please, forget it. Previously, after reseting my modem, I did not check if the synch was good... I supposed that it was become again perfect, disabled settings quickly and connected it to my router-box...
But anyway, I prefer doing the PPPoE from my linux box because the box get the isp-IP, it's simpler to route. Moreover (not sure of my english here), the DHCP server in the ST516 seemed to be in conflict with the DHCP server on the linux box... The ST516 saw the WinXP box, but not connected from the linux box, but directly to the ST516, and gave it a IP! But from the Win box, the IP used is the IP delivered by the DHCP on the linux box... So I think I will return to the Bridge mode, but checking the synch with DMT before connecting it to the linux router |

| Good to hear.
The first hop when you set the modem to routed mode will be high because the modem set to respond to ping at a VERY low priority. So dont look at first hop.
Ping google.com as bridge then ping it as routed you'll see no difference. I tried it.
Bridge MSS/MTU 1452/1492
Routed MSS/MTU 1440/1480
you can always use Raspppoe which is what I do to get the 1492 MTU
Difference in speed is 545kb/sec vs 550kb/sec. |

Hi Gabier77,
All right, here's a clue... Or two, actually!

Need more? Read the "CLI Manual"... |

Hi TilHasBB,
For 'DMT' to work it might be necessary to use the "disable Pingcheck" option (see "Misc. Settings"), that's all there was to do to make it work too!...

1 edit | reply to Bicephale Hello, Sorry to disturb this brilliant topic. I have a question: I use a SpeedTouch 546 v6 and just upgraded the Firmware from version 6.0.5.0 to UK 6.1.4.6 after reading mostly all 35 pages.... ouch ! DMT version 7.21 does not work properly anymore: The three windows are grey and If I enable SNR-Monitor (start), the modem reboot. Is there a clue ?. Thanks for any advice.
Edit ** Just got DMT 7344 and it works fine... Sorry

| Hi,
This reboot thing is a gift from control-freaks of the SpeedTouch team in Brussels... It's their way to demonstrate how highly they think of 'DMT', but you can thank the european ISPs because it's those morons who made such weird deseases even possible: Without their insistance, Thomson might have shown more friendliness for the few technically oriented customers who may choose to purchase a SpeedTouch.

| Hi, I agree... I use Alcatel SpeedTouch since 2001 with the first USB venerable "Green fish".. Then got a ST-510 and be happy for years. I switch to a ST 536 v5 for a while and bought (on Ebay) my ST-546 v6 just 3 days ago. My line is 4,2 Km and 53 Db attenuation. Of course I can't reach the 8000 Kbps down and 1024 Kbps. DMT helped me to get the maximum (around 3800 /860) depending of the inter-modulation from others lines. Too many Adsl customers around me (more than 45.000 for one DSLAM) Thanks for nice job. |

I tried to find some ANSI T1.413 variations, any luck with that?

| Within my ST-536 I have tried to play with default tones (12) to 10 or different values. This just affect the Upload margin SNR by moving down the speed from 992 to 776 kbps... I did not find how to get more download speed with a such long line with 1 km aerial wire copper with at least 20 Connection boxes on the way....!!! (Clean at home). |

| Hi Old Computer,
I was hoping there could be a way to use some very old v4.2.x FirmWares on a v6 SpeedTouch but that's not likely to happen, i also believed that there's a symetric CLI command for "maxbitspertoneUS" like "maxbitspertoneDS" but it must have been in awaken dreams only... Then, what about "extendedBWmode"?
Isn't there any real tweaking which can be done???

| I have to check your suggestion about "maxbitspertoneDS". The CLI is not very easy to read for me - My English is too bad - and there is no French translation for latest version. About "extendedBWmode"... I have to learn about...
My need (and for others) is to force remote DSLAM to send 1,5 Db more for download in order to increase SNR then Speed sync. I stick with 18 Decibels and DMT when using registers 0E or / and 0D does nothing. |

SRA was supposed to be hidden somewhere inside one of the MoDemOptions (Register 8, Bit 1), it seems:

Sra is supported by all French DSLAM. So it is not a problem with the ST546. (sra is NOT disabled). In fact, I would force the dslam to send more power to gain a little speed (SNR). With 19.5 db (down) the speedtouch synchronize at 4,228 kbps at home. Actually I got 3616 Kbps and 18 Db. (Seen during long holidays when most people are swimming somewhere...) |

| Hi,
I wish i could experiment with ADSL2+ but Spectrum Shaping under plain old ADSL will just have to do:

| I just wanted to say thanks for posting this information. I got my SpeedTouch 516v6 and was able to get DMT up and going within an hour.
