| Building 2 Dual Xeon Crunchers
I just bought 2 Tiger i7322 (S5351) dual socket 604 motherboards from geeks.com for 29.95 each (last 2 in stock actually). I am trying to find the max supported xeon cpu for these boards but with no luck. I looked allover the tyan site but came up empty handed. I just dont want to buy 4 EXPENSIVE cpus and not be able to return them. thanks in advance. |

| old board and DDR-333/266 ECC. and they taken the bios updates down form there site.
A old 940 amd dual cpu system will blow that away and it has more pci-e lanes with SLI.
This is a old intel board with 1 fsb that each of the cpus are on. |

My Safest Guess would be the Xeon Socket 604 3.6GHz (800MHz FSB) CPU w/2MB L2 Cache... With Tyan's lack of EXACT info on your particular board (S5351), I'd be hesitant to suggest even trying the 3.8GHz chips on that board. 
(Edit): I DID (finally) find a reference to the S5351, and it does indeed mention XEON DUAL-CORE capability, but the lack of any reference to this board on their CPU guide is puzzling: »www.tyan.com/product_board_detai···?pid=535

Is this for Team Helix?
Anyways, I've haven't found anything either for that board for 20 minutes now
One thing I recommend to those dealing with Team Helix and going to spend atleast 500 dollars to crunch could always go with a Playstation 3 which would be more cost effective. However, I doubt you will reach that price mark.

They should take the processors that Tursiops_G referenced. If you match up what processors the Intel 7320 chipset can handle it will give you a key.

I don't know that I would go for the fastest as the Xeon's are easily overclocked. I run 2.8's at 3.1, which is a minor overclock, but still within the specifications that Intel says they can handle.
You might want to do some digging around here »forums.2cpu.com/ as they specialize in dualies.
Update, I checked through 2cpu.com and did not find anything on that particular board.

you can get an used 20 gig for about 300 at an game store (Used)
it will also use less power (dual dual cores would use about 125 Watts each) once u add the other stuff it's over 400 watts
there for paying for it self ( it only uses 200watts) |

It's too bad you already bought the boards because I have a better suggestion for you. I would suggest looking on ebay or craigslist for a Dell PowerEdge 2600 server. These are very similar to what you want to do in that they support two Xeon CPUs but they do not support dual core versions (533 bus) and max out at 3.06GHz. There are several to choose from at $500 and cheaper, some as low as $300 but those don't usually have dual CPUs. Of course the case for the 2600 is huge so you may not want something that big in which case the route you are taking is better.
If you want to continue down this path I would suggest that 3.4GHz or maybe 3.6GHz would be the maximum those boards would support. But given the prices of even the 2.8GHz CPU, how much are you willing to spend on this? |

Newer chips, especially if integrated video is used tend to be lower in power consumption than their older cousins.

It looks to be an interim board that came out at the end of the socket 604 life cycle. Tyan probably patched it with an updated BIOS and a few tweaks so it could handle the last of that generation of Xeons.
I'd find a nice matched pair of compatible Xeons, a couple of good heat sinks some memory and a good power supply and then let it crunch. The Xeon family of processors are very durable.

| Im having a bit of trouble locating a cheap case for the two. All i want is a 1 5.25bay and at least 2 3.5in internal bays and in black. those are my only conditions. Im having trouble because it is a SSI CEB (12.0" x 10.2"; 304.8mm x 259.1mm) board. |

| Have you thought about setting them up like a blade and not using a case? That will keep them cooler.
If fan noise is a concern or you have cats it might not be the best solution.
If the object of the game is cheap crunchers though it might be an option.....

12" x 10"? That's doable. Not in the case you want but there is one though it isn't technically a "case". How about this guy: »www.highspeedpc.com/Merchant2/me···hStation. It has a baseplate that is 14" x 13", it is intended for an e-ATX board but I believe the SSI CEB boards share the same mounting holes. If not it shouldn't be hard to modify. Yeah, it's expensive but so is any case that will fit an E-ATX or SSI CEB board, especially if it is as small as you want (people tend to charge more to make things smaller). |

From what you are describing, you want a "Mini-ATX" Case style, but that board will require at least a Mid-3/4 to Full-Size ATX case... Black is indeed nice, but is usually a bit more expensive than Plain Beige/White... Also, "Cheap" PC Cases usually come with *CHEAP* Power Supplies, and that can put your Entire Hardware Investment at risk...
