Cannot connect during mornings

Up until last week 9/28 or 9/29 my Speedstream 5360 was working normally. Lately there is a problem where the ability to connect worsens, where I have to power-cycle the modem to resync every few minutes, up to the point where no connection is possible. Yet, later in the evening the modem can reconnect. The affected time frame is daily from about 5AM to at least 8:30-9AM (when I have to go to the office). By the time I return (about 5:30/6:00pm), I power-cycle the modem and the DSL connection works normally.

In the mornings, the modem lights seem to cycle through a pattern. Power goes on, then enet. Sometimes enet flashes a few times. Then the DSL light can flash up to 30 seconds, before going dim for maybe 5 seconds, and then flashing for 30 more. Rinse, repeat. I also see the three rightmost lights flash three times in unison.

I'm tending to think this is a sync problem. There aren't any new interferences on my end. The upgrade I got back at the end of August had been working great until this time.

Would a newer model modem help (read: line stats), or would a speed downgrade help, or something else? Thanks for any suggestions.

Find a friend or neighbor who has a newer modem(SpeedStream 4100 or 4100b,5100b,or a Motorola 2210)and check your line stats. Could be a bad modem, since the 5360 is so old.

Yeah, I'm going to try that because looking at the modem's activity this afternoon, it is just endlessly self-rebooting without indication of attempting to sync. I think the 5 year old modem is toast. Thanks.

Are you hooked into a Router?

I do have a WRT54G, but it's not wired in line with the modem.

Then, if you have the 5360, I take it you are connected to it and doing PPPoE with the computer.

I picked up a 4100b, and am still unable to connect. I have tried swapping cables, filters, ethernet cards (computers), and modem. Best as I can get with the 4100b is the power, ethernet, and DSL lights lit steady green. The activity light flashes on once every 15 seconds or so with one computer, and will flash maybe three times every 15 seconds or so with the other computer. Normally PPPoE is run on the computer. The pppd log says "Timeout waiting for PADS packets". (I'll do a search on PADS next.)

The 4100b's diagnostic pages report the following: 3008 kbps down / 512 kbps up, software 1.0.0.63, SN margin 26.0dB, line attenuation 13.0dB. The modem came configured for hosting PPPoE itself, and in that case all four PPPoE test items were reported failed. I then changed the configuration to having PPP hosted on the computer, and it didn't fix things.

So you are getting a PPPoE authentication failure? Your SN Margin and Line Attenuation look fine. I had a similar problem a few months ago,it turned out to be a bad card in the RT that serves my area. My neighbor also had the same issue. After they(at&t)replaced the card, the problem went away.

I don't recall authentication failure being in the error messages. The messages had to do with PADS and other usual diagnostics. (I'm not in front of the log right now.)

Thanks for mentioning their hardware being a possible factor. I'll try to look into increasing timeout values on my end, and if that doesn't help, I'll post AT&TDirect.

Try the Speedstream modem spectrum analysis tool that deblin See Profile created, and post your results.

Attached is the spectrum analysis for PPP hosted on the modem. (If PPP is hosted on the computer, there never is any internet activity.) According to the modem web pages, authentication with the PPP server fails and "the far end did not respond to PPPoE requests". PPPoE server connectivity passed however.

deblin's tool results:
Downstream Maxrate (Estimated): 8420
Upstream Maxrate (Estimated): 972

Bit tones with notches/missing bits:

bit(s) 38:45 163.875 - 198.375 KHz
bit(s) 77:85 332.0625- 370.875 KHz
bit(s) 88:96 379.5 - 418.3125KHz
bit(s) 129:131 556.3125- 569.25KHz
bit(s) 147 633.9375- 638.25KHz

The DSL layer looks great. Do all the other diagnostic tests pass on this page?: »192.168.0.1/diags.htm

Ethernet, ADSL, ATM -- pass
PPPoE, Authentication -- fail
IP, DNS -- skipped

PPPoE connection to ethernet -- pass
PPP connection to PPPoE -- pass
PPPoE server connectivity -- pass
PPPoE server session -- fail

It said "the far end did not respond to PPPoE requests" on, I believe it was, the login page.

OK. I just asked that question to make it clear if the authentication failure was happening by itself (which it is) or if it was caused by failure at the lower level ATM layer.

Any chance that your ID and/or PW are entered incorrectly? Just a reminder, the ID now requires the "@ameritech.net" or the "@sbcglobal.net" domain name.

Don't think I'm trying to insult your intelligence here by suggesting the domain name in the ID, but just recently someone lost their internet connectivity that wasn't using the domain name. Supposedly the domain name has been a requirement for authentication for several years or more, but somehow they managed to escape having to use it until recently and were unaware of the requirement. Once they added to their ID, their authentication problems were fixed.

No worries. I had thought of the domain part, too, but I do have the @ameritech.net part included. I have also tried copy-pasting from my PPP configuration file on the computer as a check.

Just to recap, I had connectivity up through 9/28/07 or 9/29/07. Then over the course of about week, I was losing connectivity in the morning before I left for work. Power-cycling helped establish a new connection, but that connection would get lost after a few minutes of activity. When I came home, I power-cycled again, and then connectivity was stable. Currently there is no connectivity.

Hmm...this would have been just about one month into a new speed tier. I wonder if something didn't get renewed.

Arrrgh! I wasn't reading closely enough at the start of the thread about the "mornings - no authentication; evenings - authentication permitted".

This is probably a situation for the tech in AT&T Direct: »/forum/sbcdirect. Post a Trouble thread there ASAP.

I'm curious. Does the modem log say anything about what precedes the loss of authentication in the morning? I'm assuming that you leave the connection up all night and wake up to no PPPoE connection.

I'll take a look. It might be a bit before I can view the logs and get back to an internet connection.

User StillLearn IM'd me to point out in the FAQ where the generic user sbcyahooreg can be tested.

The sbcyahooreg authentication test was not successful with either the 4100b (with PPP on the modem) or with my old 5360 (with PPP on the computer).

I posted in ATTDirect last night, and as of this morning I am once again able to authenticate and surf.

Thanks everyone!
