[Help] Computer Locks up after shutting off PowerDVD

Here is a very strange one.

My computer is made by me. WinXP SP2 It is a AMD Athlon64 3000+ with 2 gig of Ram. half of Tb of HD space. NEC DVD- RW. Okay I think it meets the system requirements. IIRC two weeks ago I noticed that when using Power DVD ver 7. No additional SW installed in that time. It plays fine no problem. FF, REW, pause, no issues. Upon closing with a DVD in it. It locks up the computer. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't do anything it is a true lock up. Without a DVD no problem.

At first I thought it was the Drive, but using a different drive it happens still. Using a dif DVD disc, same. But when I use classic WMP it plays fine stop, start, eject no issues. I even went to Power DVD 6 and it still happens. I uninstalled, cleaned reg, defragged, anti-virus. Etc.etc.
It only happens with Power DVD any one experianced this or have any ideas?

Does this happen only when playing commercial disks or any disks. If only with commercial disks, it could be related to the dreaded DRM (digital rights management) copy protection. After the disk is run, it may try to prevent you from accessing it. If it happens with all disks, including ones without DRM such as home videos, you might consider reinstalling the software, if it started after an upgrade to the software you might consider going back to an earlier version of the program until they fix the bugs in the newer version.

You know I seem to remember once. I tried viewing a Disc, can't remember which commercial disc in Classic WMP. And it gave me some error regards commercial rights or what not.

BTW I did go down to Power DVD 6 and no joy, cleaned the reg before reinstall. Nothing.

What is interesting is when I mount a image of a DVD and play it it works fine.

I won't touch any Power DVD past 3.5. That is the only one that I like and that has the ability to fit to screen ...I don't have a wide screen monitor, nor do I want one, as I really like the 19" flat panel digital LCD that I have. You might go back further than version 6.

It begins to sound more like a problem with DRM. Since an image works normally, and usually to make an image you need Anydvd or a product like it that removes DRM, the image will not have any of that garbage in it. The DRM stuff will try to prevent you from accessing the disk which I am assuming is causing the problems. I can understand them wanting to protect their product, but it is a pain when the protection prevents or interferes with legitimate use of the product. If you have Anydvd try having it running when you play the disk, if it still locks up, then I am wrong about DRM being the problem. Hope this helps.

I was able to reproduce it using WMP classic. I can't play the disc, get a error. The only way to play is to reboot and then play it. The strange thing is using power dvd even with a home made (ripped and burned) dvd I get the lockup. When I get home I will enable anydvd and see if that helps.

Surprise, Surprise...Bobkd4dii was spot on.
I ran AnyDvd and had zero problems running Power DVD, no lockups on closing the program. Ejecting fine, etc.

What a PITA to have to use another program just to view DVDs.. sheesh..

Thanks Bob.

Glad I was able to help. As I said before it is a pain when copy protection gets in the way of legitimate usage of a product. That has bugged me since the old Apple II I had years ago.
