 antiseriousThe Future ain't what it used to bePremium join:2001-12-12 Scranton, PA | [Poll] DVD Copying Software - 2008 Members Choice
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's time for the 2008 Member's Choice Poll for DVD Copying! For reference, Last Year's Poll found two 'oldie-but-goodie' free programs at the top of the list. Can they possibly retain their positions? Much has changed in the last year, with the advent of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray and the growing use of transcoding media for use in portable devices such as video-iPods. While transcoding is not technically copying, I would encourage anyone to post their favorites and experiences in the body of the thread - you never know when that information might help to improve the quality of a backup, and indeed some of these programs do double-duty.
We've also got ample choice of free or paid programs available, as well as 'one-click' solutions or multi-program methods. With so many options, it's a good thing we have multiple-choice polls. Feel free to vote for all your favorites, and we welcome your comments in the thread. I've tried to cover as many selections as I could, but there's always a few that slip by, so if 'other' is your choice we'd like to know what programs or methods work for you.
I will once again stress that we are not advocating piracy!. This is simply a technical discussion regarding the making of a backup copy of a work you own, to protect from damage, loss, or wear and tear, as Fair Use laws allow. So, please leave the moral debate for another time and place. And remember, this thread will be around for a year, so please be kind and think through your comments.
Thank you all for your time and participation!
Since last year's poll I've spent virtually all my time in Linux, so K9Copy has been my main tool, and it does a great job. I also use XDVDShrink and DVD95 sometimes. Twice I had to revert to Windows for copy-protected discs, once using RipIt4Me/DVD Decrypter/DVDShrink, once using DVDFab HD Decrypter/DVDShrink.
I still haven't found a DVD that could not be copied using free tools, but it sure is nice to have a variety to choose from.
 | reply to antiserious For most of my copies I use CloneCD, Yes it does DVD's as well as CD's. It makes a one to one copy for both SL and DL disks. It also keeps the layer break on DL disks as the on original. I only use CloneDVD 2 when I have a need to transcode to fit a SL disk. |
|
 | reply to antiserious I use AnyDVD in concert with CloneDVD 2 to rip DVDs to hard drive for short term storage. When I'm ready to burn a disc, I use Ashampoo Burning Studio 7 to create backups on either single or dual layer media.
Once in a while, I'll use CloneCD to make a 1:1 copy of an original disc when I want to keep the layer breaks intact. |
DVDRemake Pro - Great for editing out crap I don't want without a trace. Also can fix/change navigation. DVDRebuilder - Reencodes to SL, slower but better quality than DVDShrink/Recode for higher percentages of compression. -- "It is a future in which globalization really does work ... and everybody winds up getting to be part of the third world." - William Gibson |
No DVD burning software was included in this poll, unless it was part of a 'one-click' package.
I do agree that Imgburn is a fine program. If we had a poll about burning software I'm sure it would rate highly.
