I don't know the topology of the Embarq service from CPE to aggregation router; but DSL is capable of better: I suspect a lot is dependent upon your distance from the DSLAM, and the condition of the plant. If your plant is subject to line conditions that destabilize DSL, they will put you on Interleaved data path, which trades low latency for stability (by allowing for more reliable error correction).
In my neighborhood, they just reconditioned the line for U-Verse (IPTV over copper pair). Even so, I have always been on Fast data path. I don't know what it would be like, though, if I was out in the hills around here. (A lot of which is covered by Verizon, instead of AT&T.)

Embarq switched me from a Static IP, to a DHCP IP the other night. I am still running almost tripple digits just to my Embarq Gateway. The high latency is playing Havoc with my VOIP.
I do not understand how almost a 100ms first hop is acceptable. It is a constant 90-100ms always to my first hop. Never any less. Of course I get the lecture from the Embarq tech support that 100ms is very low, and I should be pleased it is a steady 90-100ms.
If only you could Cyber Moon someone when they tell you that..... |
