OK - I am going to give it a shot but every time in the past that I have used the save and restore thingy I ended up having to tell the router to restore factory defaults. Good Luck

Whaddya mean .. some DIR-655 does not work with Shaw cable modems ???! I upgraded from 1.04 to 1.05 quite some time ago and everything was fine until this morning when the WAN port could not get an IP. Did Shaw update the firmware of their modems recently and messed some Dlink DIR-655 owners up ?
So via a direct connection from laptop to Shaw, I snagged the 1.10 firmware update. It did not resolve the Shaw issue unfortunately, so we all assumed it was a dead WAN port.
Is this a known issue?? Based on "decane"'s comment earlier in this thread I am thinking it might be. It would be nice to know if going back to 1.04 could fix this issue.
But at the same time I just swapped the unit under warranty and will be trying 1.10 tonight on Shaw with the new unit.
Any and all feedback would be appreciated regarding Dlink DIR-655 and Shaw modems.

2 edits | Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 I upgraded to 1.10 and restored my settings from 1.05. I was having trouble with WAN connectivity so I reset the router back to its defaults. That fixed it.
I tried restoring my settings from 1.05 again and that caused the same problem with WAN connectivity.
It seems obvious to me that some saved settings from 1.05 are not compatible with 1.10, and will cause trouble for the router if you restore them.
I would suggest writing down (copying and pasting) your settings and then re-entering them from scratch with 1.10. I finally did that and 1.10 has been problem free.

| Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 Just purchased a DIR-655 that was A1/hardware version and 1.02/firmware version. Took the leap to 1.10 today because I am seeing poor performance from the DIR-655 & the associated Xtreme-N PCMCIA card.
Upgrade was a snap as long as you backup your previous settings. Only issue I have now is one of my laptops no longer access the internet via cat5 cable or wireless. Oh well, the second cup of coffee this AM should help.
Anyone now how to manually choose a channel? I have a bunch of neighbors that are on channel 6...and want to move at my convenience.
Also....the DIR-655 runs HOT!

1 edit | Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 jmanganusa,
I don't know what the problem could be with the laptop but a second cup of coffee will fix a lot of problems.
But I did want to comment on manually choosing a channel, I forget where it is but it it there. Every time I go to do something on the 655 there are so many choices it is like an Easter Egg hunt.
But if you leave it in auto and a particular channel gets TOO busy it will switch to a less used. Seems like a better way to go. Albeit I know 99% of the folks that come home with a router leave it on channel six (and unprotected). I have seen mine go to channel one all by it self.
Anywho just a thought.
PS - On the "Hot" situation, they all seem to run a little warmer than most of us would like. If you run it horizontally got to Radio Shack and get some of those rubber stick-on feet (black) that are square and about 3/8 of an inch tall. The give the unit a little more breathing room. In the vertical mode I don't think there is anything you can do to improve the ventilation.

Any one tried version 1.10b04 from Oz? »www.dlink.com.au/tech/Download/d···Firmware
I have it running but was curious what the differences could be? All i can see is it has 13 channels. Is us normally 11?
On how to set channel manually: Go 'Setup' (on Top) 'Wireless Settings' ( on left) 'Manual Wireless Network Setup' (bottom) Untick 'Enable Auto Channel Scan' Select 'Wireless Channel' Cheers

1 edit | Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 I took a look at the read.me and all that seems different is they have fixed a problem with some types of modems.
The 13 channels is because is it not for American consumption, The FCC here limits us to 11 channels.
Now I am wondering if the European configuration has more or less power output, never have heard any one say. My gut feeling is they have a lower power limit, but it wouldn't be the first time my gut instinct was wrong.

| Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 @HolmanGT How to see whether the power output is less? I have a European bought DIR-655. Always downloaded and used the US Versions of the firmware. Never got any problems with it.
Will try now to install Version 1.10 and see how it's working. BTW: I have 13 channels to use in my DIR-655 to use.

| Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 stlgera,
I think it was in the 1.05 thread that someone posted that like you they had a European model with a US Version Firmware and they still maintained their 13 channels and I assumed power levels. The two of us came to the conclusion that the number of channels and the power level where hard coded into the units meant for the European market.
I too have switched between European and US versions and the channel count and I presume power levels followed the firmware (I have not done this with the 655). But as I said earlier the guy that stuck the US 1.05 in his British unit stayed at 13 channels.
stlgera, I would try the AU version but according to the Version text the only thing different between it and the 1.1 version is a fix for some specific modems, so for the sake of playing it safe I am not going to try it but I am sure someone else will come along and give it a go and we will see if the channel numbers follow the Version type.
Sure wish there was some straight forward method of measuring the power level out, but the only way I know to do it is by "try it and compare" the results. Which is a reasonable method but for posting to a forum it is pretty darn subjective and the answers would probably vary all over the place depending on a myriad of test condition variables.

| Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 @HolmanGT I have never had less then 13 channels. Think also it has to do for which marked the unit is produced. In US only 11 channels are allowed. In EU you can use 13 channels.
I could not load my old settings after upgrade to 1.10. The router always told me "Busy at the moment.. .please try late". Same problem I had since upgrade to 1.04.

For the one pc that can't use the internet, I found that I had used the "clone this pc's mac address" feature during the router setup, and that pc couldn't use the internet (firmware 1.10). Once I changed the router's mac to be something random, all was ok!

| Short version: if your LAN is not the DIR-655 default 192.168.0/8 based one then to avoid "too busy problems" applying old settings after upgrade: change the LAN subnet to what it was before you upgraded - i.e. what is stored in your settings file, it will reboot, then upload the settings again - you should be fine.
Long version (how I figured it out):
I just upgraded from 1.04 to 1.10 - I got the "too busy" error when I tried to restore the settings. Since I had not written the settings down (would be nice if their file was human readable, or XML...) I thought I was screwed - no amount of on/off, reset etc. etc. was working, always "too busy".
Drat!
Then I remembered some other hardware I'd had where it wouldn't let you restore the settings unless the admin password in the settings matched the current one. Since the upgrade resets the admin password I tried changing it to what I had before and then restore settings - still "too busy".
Drat and double drat!
So I went back to 1.04 and STILL had the can't restore problem "too busy" problem. Am I really going to have to reconfigure everything from scratch...
Doh!
But the idea of changing the admin password gave me an idea - I have my LAN the 10.0.0/8 based private subnet and the default after upgrade is 192.16/16 so I tried changing the subnet to 10.0.0/8 rebooting and uploaded my settings. Whadayouknow - it worked!
So then went forward to 1.10 - still wouldn't take my settings immediately after upgrade (as before) so changed the subnet again to 10.0.0/8 and was able to upload my settings. All is fine again and I am happy.
My theory is the update settings process looks at the new settings file and trying to ping or attach to the routers IP stored in that file. So if your subnet is not the default one then it wont work and the settings refuse to apply. Note I didn't have to change the admin password - only the subnet.

i've got Blue lights, so maybe the 1.02 didn't had the A2 rev in the firmware?
Overall EXTREMELY pleased with this router. my last intended reboot was after i've reloaded my settings when upgrading to 1.10 No disconnecs or unintended reboots whatsoever. I am running Cable UPC 20mbit down / 2mbit up

No reboot nothing. Having a 100 Mbit down, and 10 Mbit up connection and running Web-Server, FTP-Server and Bittorrent File sharing from my LAN. Great having this QoS function as well, where you can set up each service / computer / port, individual, so those traffics don't effect my speed when I'm surfing on the internet, or watching VideoOnDemand.
The only thing I found is that with FW V 1.10, some settings require a reboot. With 1.04 I could change settings in the Virtual Server, Port-forwarding, and save it without rebooting the router to make it valid. Now with 1.10 he wants a reboot after setting changes.

| I recently updated to fw v1.10, but I couldn't restore the settings from the Configuration file. Maybe it's just because I modify so many settings (Virtual Servers, WiFi Settings, Port Forwarding, Port Triggering, DHCP, and the list goes on...) that whenever I update the firmware, I'm out of luck restoring the settings from a previous firmware configuration file. Also I updated because I wanted to see if the "Bridge" option was back, but the sad news is that the Bridge is gone... I haven't really seen any change from v1.05, but I've being using v1.10 for a couple of hours now... | |

HAHAHAHA OMG!
I just spent like 5 hours today talking to Shaw and D-link technical support. I have been on 1.5 for awhile now with no problems, but this morning it would not establish an IP address.
Upgraded to 1.10.. several factory resets.. swapped out ethernet cables.. set everything to dynamic IP.. switched around all my network settings.
I eventually got a replacement from Memory Express. Hooked it up and it immediately worked. Flashed the firmware to 1.10 because you need to have the latest firmware, right?
Ohh man my whole day is gone because of Shaw.
So, do I just download firmware 1.04 off of D-link's site? I flash my firmware just like any other time?
We should all call into Shaw and make sure they know what the problem is. Hopefully they can fix it, so we all benefit from the new firmware.

The response? They've changed nothing with their systems, routers aren't supported, try older firmware, power cycle your modem and router, etc. etc.
Many of us were already using fw 1.05 without a hitch so I find it hard to believe that this is a fw issue. If it is, wouldn't the problem have existed right from the start of using 1.05?

| Re: DIR-655 New Firmware Version 1.10 Chalk up two more DIR-655 routers having issues with Shaw.
Yesterday I received a note from a friend who had the DIR-655 warning me not to upgrade to firmware 1.10 as he had just spent quite a while troubleshooting his Shaw connection with said firmware. The end result was that he had to downgrade to 1.04.
Today I woke up to see my internet was down as well. Although I didn't upgrade to 1.10, I had been running 1.05 for quite some time with no issues. Still, I pretty much figured I was having the same issue. Strange thing was, I still had to phone Shaw when I hooked a laptop up to the modem directly for it to work, as the laptop wouldn't even get an IP. They did a reset, and then the laptop worked.
I still had to downgrade to 1.04 to get the router to accept an IP from the modem however.
All I can say is that Shaw is darn lucky that a friend tipped me off to this beforehand -- otherwise I probably still would have no net connection.
