Yeah I kinda hijacked that other thread.
So to you vets with the phone co around here what do you think about staying employed after the end of a contract?
If you have read the other thread you know that I am up for outside plant tech, but worry about it being a limited term two year contract. I have applied for the premises tech now as well only because it is a regular employee position and I would not have to worry about losing my job in two years for no other reason than two years have gone by.
Anyone been in a situation like this with ATT before?
I did a job preview for the OPT and they said we would NOT be allowed to bid on any other jobs within the company while under the contract, but that a lot of people are due to retire just before the two years is up and they may allow us to apply just before the end of the two year term, but maybe not.
Lots of buts there so I don't know which way to go.
Any suggestions? |

| I'm sure I would stand a better chance than anyone off the street, but I can't afford a gap in employment. I also can't see how I would be any better off than anyone else hired today if there are more of us on the two year contract then there are retiring.
I dunno.
Does anyone think it may be better to do a less desirable job now just to get my foot in the door and be a regular employee and then be able to move to another position inside the company?
How does moving from one position to another like that happen anyway? I always heard that if you can get anything to get your foot in the door...do it. Then you can apply for other jobs and transfer locations, positions....etc.
Is this true? Or has this maybe changed since SBC took over? |

I would take the OPT title more pay and if you don't FU at the end of your term or maybe sooner you can bid out to another title or go non-term as on OPT.
