|  T-1 setup questions.
First off let me state that I am a college student studying computer science and working on Cisco CCNA certification. The small business that my mom works for is expanding and adding more employees so they are getting T-1 internet and phone service. I do not at this time have any specs on the phone system being used or what they are being provided from McLeod and the company installing the phone system, all I know is that the phones are not IP based.
I am in the process of getting quotes for the 24 port switch and wireless router that they want. I was wanting to know if the Cisco 871 router will work with the T-1 setup or will the provider offer a router with all the functionality of the 871 router? They are wanting wireless, VPN functionality and most importantly a firewall. The other reason for the 871 is that they do not want a windows 2003 domain because of the costs involved for a server, so I am going to need something to hand out DHCP addresses and provide DNS.
Their current setup is DSL modem hooked directly into the switch with static ip address and mapping the modem as the default gateway. (I did not set this up)My guess is the Netopia modem provides some sort of routing but no DHCP requests.
Since I have never dealt with T-1 before, and esp. one that will serve as phone and internet. Is there a special CSU/DSU that they put in or does the phone PBX provide the Ethernet jack for the internet that then would get plugged into the 871 router. I am wanting to know what to expect once it gets installed.

| you will need to understand from McLeod what is included before you start making plans. typically they will provide an integrated access device to terminate the T1 circuit in your phone room. they will split off the voice channels to a 66 block to interconnect as analog into the phone system. for the data they might include a T1 router for connection to your server or LAN. you will need to find out what model router is included, if any, and what functionality it will have. once you know what they will be providing, then you can figure out what you have to fill in.

One possibility is to terminate both voice and data at the T1 router itself. From the router, voice line goes to a PBX and data line goes to a Ethernet switch.
There is another possibility of having separate incoming lines, one for voice and another for data. In other words, the voice and data split process takes place at the CO.
As mentioned, this is something to discuss with McLeod and installer company. |

Ok I have got some information from McLeod, they are sending us an AdTran 900 router. The tech support recommended a Sonicwall, so I have been researching the Sonicwall 01-SSC-6086, but I notice that it costs more than the Cisco 871w, plus there are annual subscription costs with the Sonicwall.
Are there any good selling points that would want me to push them more towards the Sonicwall vs going with the Cisco 871w?

I would go with the Cisco 871W I have one in my house (not the wireless version) and I love it, no stupid annual subscription or anything. It's very powerfull and since your are working on your CCNA it's a good learning tool. The 871 will handle everything, NAT, DHCP, NTP, firewall, VPN etc.. |

| I think I will make that recommendation to them, they will like it because it is cheaper. They did not want to do the subscription if they did not have to.
Quick question you said you had the 871, how well does the easyvpn client work and how many users are allowed to connect in? |

| I have not used the VPN feature yet, I tried once setting it up and could not but that was probably because I never read the documentation.  There is a web GUI to config the router with so it can't be that hard. |

The Adtran device is a Total Access 900. It's an integrated access device. It takes the T1 line coming in and splits it out with voice lines and an ethernet connection. |
