[TWC] RoadRunner Email issue - 550 Relay problem

Hello

I am at my wits end with this. This started with a friend down the street who is a former Adelphia customer. He can send email from Outlook Express to @roadrunner.com; he cannot send email to any other address (@yahoo.com, @gmail.com, etc). And I mean none.. Ive worked with RR tech support on three different phone calls. The second tech told me that his Outlook Express was corrupt and would need to be reinstalled. So we installed Outlook 2003 from scratch, and the tech walked me through setting it up step by step [Im not an Outlook guy, we use Lotus.. so just to be sure I let the tech walk me through it]. Same problem.. anything outside of @roadrunner.com gets the following error:

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxx@gmail.com'. Subject 'Again', Account: 'RoadRunner', Server: 'smtp-server.roadrunner.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relaying mail to gmail.com is not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"

Now, the last tech I spoke with tonight had me try the RR webmail, it works fine. The tech proceeded to tell me that the problem is outlook (yeah right)...

Note: I do not use my RoadRunner email account, and have not done so since they took over Adelphia; i did the migration to the Roadrunner but I prefer to use Gmail. Anyway, I came home and fired up my Outlook.. it downloads the messages I had from the RoadRunner email server. However, when I try and send an email to anything outside of @roadrunner.com it fails just like my friends email.

Here are the settings that are in my outlook:
*Servers Tab*
Incoming: pop-server.roadrunner.com
Outgoing: smtp-server.roadrunner.com
Account name: accountname in lowercase no @roadrunner.com
Password: correct password that works in webmail..
Log on using Secure Password Auth is Unchecked
My Server requires authentication Unchecked

*Advanced Tab*
Smtp port: 25 / SSL unchecked
Pop3 port: 110 / SSL unchecked
Serer Timeout: 1 Minute
The rest of that page unchecked

Now, here is what is odd with the Webmail.. When I send a web mail message to my Gmail account it shows up as coming from MyUserName@adelphia.net... Same thing for my friend, HisName@adelphia.net.

I think this is a server problem that is effecting old adelphia customers in my area... Anyone got anything I can try to fix this problem? Because Time Warner is not helping or listening...

Thanks in advance !

Re: [TWC] RoadRunner Email issue - 550 Relay problem

The error message you are seeing reflects that you are not connected to the Road Runner network. I had a gentleman call me last week about this very same issue. He had connected by mistake to his neighbors Wi-Fi (which is a DSL connection, off TW network) and therefore when he went to send mail to anyone but a road runner address, it gave this message. Once we disconnected from the neighbors Wi-Fi and connected to his own, it worked like a champ.

Double check where you are connected for one, see where your IP address is resolving to. If it isnt road runner, you have your answer.

Thank you for this simple solution ! I also had Bright House tech support on phone for an hour and she said my problem must be Outlook. Turns out, I was connected to a neighbor's wireless network, not mine. All works fine now. Thanks again !!!!!

Disregard @adelphia.net that is not causing the problem. Go to this site, »www.whatismyip.com . Please report what it shows for an ip address. It sounds like you aren't on the RR network or you have an IP that is not in the acls for the smtp server.

If my IP is not listed in the access control list of Roadrunners email server.. what can I do?

Call RR tech support. Give them your IP address (they probably already have it) and tell them whats happening. They should be able to get this escalated and finally resolved. Also, might be good to mention when it started happening.

Re: [TWC] RoadRunner Email issue - 550 Relay problem

Oh yeah this is alot of fun.

Im getting the same run around that I was at my buddies house. Even after explaining the situation.

They had me resetup Outlook again.. And when it didnt work the lady said "you need to either call the maker of your PC for help or you can contact Microsoft for outlook help, its not a problem with RoadRunner..

I asked her to escalate the issue and she put me back on hold again for the third time... I wholely expect that she will come back and say its not a RoadRunner problem again..

I am assuming your return to Field says xxxxx@roadrunner.com
I had the same issue. I can't use the roadrunner servers. I have to use the @adelphia.com return address, and connect through mail.adelphia.net servers. They totally screwed the pooch on the migration, and have been unable to fix it, or even find out what is wrong. I gave up trying.

This does not make sense.

C:\Documents and Settings\Hob>nslookup mail.adelphia.net

C:\Documents and Settings\Hob>nslookup mail.roadrunner.com

Both mail.roadrunner.com and mail.adelphia.net resolve to the same address as they are both the same servers.

I know... makes no sense whatsoever. But if I go the roadrunner route, it asks for autentication every time, and works one out of 5 times. Works every time if I go the adelphia route. Like I said, gave up trying to figure it out.

Well after going through three levels of tech support. I spoke with the NOC a guy named Seth.

Kudos to him for being the only person that listened to me. For any of you in former Adelphia land here are the correct settings (they changed in the last two weeks).
Incoming (pop): pop-server.roadrunner.com
Outgoing (STMP): smtp-server.sc.rr.com

The final guy I spoke with spend nearly an hour on the phone with me and working with his peers to figure out the issue. He thought it was an Outlook problem to begin off just like the other tech support. However, once I told him that a buddy down the street was getting the same problem he started listening.

So I hope this saves someone the multiple horrible hours on the phone with RR Support that I had to go through to get this.

Strtangely enough, I was having the same issue the past few days, but with getting my Yahoo mail to download into Thunderbird. Turned out that the Yahoo POP settings (port number) had changed.

Not even close to the same issue. Downloading email isn't the same as sending email. The original problem was that Road Runner failed to communicate the correct SMTP server names for their migrated Adelphia users to use in Southern California; for sending email.

Your issue is with attempting to download email from Yahoo! Web mail servers using a web-to-POP proxy.

I believe that "sc" is South Carolina, not Southern California (socal). The point is the same, however. The wrong smtp entry in the e-mail client will be a stopper.

Migrated Adelphia users should still be using smtp-server.roadrunner.com to send mail out.

This is true for former Adelphia across the country.
(unless you actually moved to a legacy TW area)

I don't know, I tried the smtp-server.sc.rr.com outgoing, and it has yet to ask me to re-enter my PW every 10 mins. Now if I can just get WebMail to stop calling me "me"@adelphia.net..........

I think they screwed the pooch on my migration a while back. I couldn't maintain my username for some assanine reason. But strangely enough, I set up a sub account with my old username, and it works just fine, so it obviously wasn't an existing account. Albeit "me"@adelphia.net" (according to webmail).

Re: [TWC] RoadRunner Email issue - 550 Relay problem

As of right now, I am having the same issue.

I'm a former Comcast customer and I've been sending mail through Mozilla ThunderBird via smtp.comcast.net just fine for the past year. Now, tonight it all of a sudden asked me for a password and even though I gave them the correct one, the password prompt still comes up.

So I decided to change the outgoing address to smtp-server.ca.rr.com(the "CA" is because I'm in California)

Now I get the same error the original poster is getting about not being able to relay mail to yahoo.com. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem?

Re: [TWC] RoadRunner Email issue - 550 Relay problem

The "year" is significant. It marks the length of time Comcast was under contract to keep your old e-mail account live. That year has passed, and the Comcast account is now, no longer active.

Do that myipinfo thing and let me know what your default gateway and subnet mask are.

You are absolutely correct. The year has indeed passed recently and it appears, like you said, that my old Comcast account is now completely inactive.

So...I've switched the outgoing server to smtp-server.ca.rr.com, and from *HOME* I've been able to send mail no problem. But here's the problem....I do almost all of my internet and email activity from work on my laptop, via Sprint's Mobile Broadband Service EVDO Rev.b, and use a PCMCIA Modem card to connect online. So is there a way to avoid the relaying error whilst connecting from a cellular broadband modem card away from home?

Why did connecting via the old smtp.comcast server allow me to send mail from this PC card, and the smtp-server.ca.rr.com one does not?

They must have been configured as an "open relay". Most systems are not these days due to spam and spoofing issues. If or until TW implements authentication for sending mail through their system while connected to another network, you will have to use your Sprint account to send the mail (assuming they gave you one with service.) I have Verizon and use their SMTP for sending e-mails (my roadrunner.com address still shows up as the "from" address so replies go to the proper place.) This works in most cases except if the receiving server checks the sending address against the "from" address, and in those cases I get bounces. Doesn't happen very often, but it does happen occasionally.

Meaning 'smtp.comcast.net'? I can assure you that the server has never been configured as an open relay. For former Comcast users sucked up by Road Runner, there was a one year "grace period" during which time their former "@comcast.net" accounts would continue to work with the Comcast message submission servers.
If or until TW implements authentication for sending mail through their system while connected to another network, you will have to use your Sprint account to send the mail (assuming they gave you one with service.)
That is certainly one of the weak spots of many ISPs, these days. At least 'at&t Yahoo! HSI', Comcast, and some levels of Verizon recognize that their subscribers may work on the road, and require SMTP message submission access from outside of the ISP's IP network. All run authenticating SMTP message submission servers which allow off network access.

Sounds like a poorly configured system. Something like this:
...shouldn't be rejected.

Re: [TWC] RoadRunner Email issue - 550 Relay problem

Actually, the new mail system does support authenticated SMTP.
The Legacy Adelphia system did not.

Until then....

»webmail.ca.rr.com

You can send mail at will via the webmail platform from any IP address on the planet.

by the way, Comsast e-mail is actually hosted by AT&T...perhaps yer on native AT&T address space at work or sprint EVDO.

Hosted "by", or hosted "on". Not that it makes any difference. A mail server can be hosted in any IP address space, and configured to only accept email from a specific range of IP addresses in another block of IP addresses.

I know that they were hosted in AT&T IP network space in the past, but that wouldn't affect access. Comcast's domain gateway mail servers now appear to be hosted in Comcast IP network space. As is their SMTP message submission server. As of 15NOV20072135 (U.S. Military date/time group, PST).

Known issue? If you were a former Adelphia person, your account STILL lives on the former Adelphia mail system.

And Time Warner owns all the former Adelphia assets. Including the domain name and mail system.

It isn't even an issue.

You're still using the Adelphia mail system. Time Warner just owns it.

@rr.com

I have had this exact problem for the last 5-6 days...and have been round and round with RR - with absolutely no help. I am also a former Adelphia customer. I just tried to change my outgoing mailserver to smtp-server.nc.rr.com (since I am in NC rather than SC) and it worked like a charm! How can this be that they changed their outbound server addresses - and none of the support people know it?
