Re: [DSL] Can i buy my own modem for Verizon DSL?

Ebay for used and cheap Verizon branded; Best Buy, Circuit City, and even Walmart carry Verizon branded Actiontecs. For any other brand, they'll work, you just might have to do an extra step at setup to get it to work on the Verizon network.

Verizon uses standard's based ADSL so any modem/router that supports the standard will work. I replaced my aging standalone Westell modern and Multitech router with a Netopia 3346N I got on eBay. As others have said there many choices both new and used.

One recommendation is try to get a modem that supports ADSL2. That is second generation ADSL specification. It is backwards compatible with previous version. Verizon does not officially support ADSL2 but newer DSLAM line cards have it build in. Provides several enhancement that improve overall performance.

Yes, absolutely. Go to ebay...you can get a Westell 6100 for very little $$

I have three extras myself. You acquire them over the years...each time you move they send a new one. They just sent me another one last month for no apparent reason. They are so cheap on ebay it's worth having a spare

I was wandering around at Best Buy the other day. They had an integrated DSL Modem/Wi-Fi router on the shelf with a Verizon logo on the box. They were indeed for sale.
