MJ for Long Distance Calls Only

I wish to retain my local phone service and use MagicJack only to make long distance calls.
Would I insert MJ for long distance and then just remove it to revert back to normal service? Does removal create any software issues or computer glitches?

Not sure what you mean. Just get a phone and connect it to the mj adapter connected to usb port. No software issues so far.

If you want to connect it to homewiring thats another issue but I am not sure from your post thats what u want to do.

You could leave the telephone that you currently use plugged in to the existing jack for normal use. When you want to make a long distance call, plug the MJ into your computer and then unplug your telephone from its existing jack and plug it into the MJ. Make your long distance call, then plug your phone back into the phone company jack. Unplug the MJ from the computer and put it aside until the next time you want to use it.

This is way too cumbersome! If you had a Dollartree chain store in your neighborhood, I go there and pick up a Chinese made corded phone for $1 and plug it into your MJ adapter to use.

I bought a cheap phone at Walgreen's that didn't work well at all with MJ. Outgoing was fine, but on inbound calls the phone would only ring for 1 second and then cut off the caller.

I'd suggest paying a little more, if necessary, to make sure the phone works properly. There used to be a place on the MagicJack forum where people posted phone models that worked, but MJ wiped out their forums last week.

I am just curious. If you still have this phone, can you please try to plug it into any ATA device to see if such a behavior still exists. If it doesn't, then perhaps MJ fails to ring the phone that requires certain amount of currents. You have to remember that MJ is a USB device with a limited current.

Re: MJ for Long Distance Calls Only

Can MJ be used for data transfer, such as faxing or modem to modem connections? Does anyone know what the settings that are needed to make a connection. I've tried to dial out from my computer to a remote modem with no success. I can hear the connection attempt but my modem won't respond to the response sent from the remote modem.
