Google stock is not an issue. let's face it: the company is a industry revolutionizer. their entry into the wireless market should drive prices down and increase features. an added bonus is that it should hurt the lazy and greedy incumbents. |

Google is now a PUBLIC company and that has changed and will continue to change the way they do business. The current Google isn't the same risk taking company it was before their IPO.
My guess is that for PR reasons they will announce they will bid, but because it will hurt their bottom line and their stock price, they will not try very hard to win the bidding process.

Several people familiar with the matter said that the company believes that it would lose goodwill in Washington, if it didn't bid, given that it won changes to the auction rules that will force the winner of one block of spectrum to open its network to any mobile device or software application. --

Your "lazy and greedy incumbents" were revolutionizers at one point in time...and still are in some realms. If Google enters this market, it won't be for holistic reasons. Google isn't a savior, they're out to make money like every other corporation. The difference is, they've done a great job and hiding marketing their removal of privacy for targeting ads and services....and the sheep continue to follow. |

I find it very amusing that the same people who foam at the mouth over AT&T and Verizon, are positively fawning when it comes to Apple and Google. They actually BELIEVE that all corporations are not the same - i.e. profit seeking entities that will do anything short of illegality to goose profits and the stock price.
I am pro-corporate as many here point out, but I have no illusions over the actions of corporations and where their interests lie. It is to make money. People who ascribe any other motives to some corporations and not others merely delude themselves.

the difference is corporate ethics and responsibility. my personal opinion is that AT&T and their actions are the worst out there. Choosing to break the law and spy on U.S. citizens without a warrant is unforgiveable. Their excuses that the government strong armed them into cooperating is unbelievable especially if you look at Qwest, another telco that refused to cooperate because the actions were clearly illegal. AT&T chose to break the law and get what they wanted (merger approval). Also, their choice of technology for Uverse leaves a lot to be desired.
Verizon at least gets the technology part correct, using fiber to ensure their future competitiveness. However, they are in the same boat as AT&T. They made the decision to spy on citizens of this country. Unforgiveable.
Google is a young company that hasn't been completely taken over by the greed that the other telcos obviously suffer from. At least not yet. They are out to make money, and they manage to do so by breaking the expectations of what is currently in place.
You are deluding yourself if you believe that all corporations are the same. |

Like letting all of their information, browsing habits, and other identifiable attributes to be used by a company solely for the purpose of making money? Sounds like other corporations to me. Just because Google has performed one of the greatest marketing feats in history, doesn't mean that life will be cherry if they purchase this spectrum. I say if, because I don't believe Google will seriously go after the spectrum...at least on their own, or as a primary investor. |

I agree with you. However, the trick is being a good corporate citizen. Make money while doing "good" things. This is of course different than making money while having a great marketing department spin. |

I agree with you morbo. It is just facile cynicism to say that all companies are the same. They have a life cycle and google is still a young innovative company driven by the vision of its founders. It will, in the end, become like all the rest, a reactionary dinosaur run by overpaid mediocre managers, but it isn't there yet. It's agenda presently aligns much better with the interests of the public than the agenda of the ATTs of the world. |
