Re: Best DSL modem

My line is fine, I get 24.5db SNR and 7.5db attenuation, I just want the lowest latency possible, especially when uploading @ around half maximum capacity.

Does modem selection affect that, or is it just the way PPPoE functions?

tried 3 or 4 of them (RE: 2wire) - none of them worked, so i just gave up.

Picked up new SS 4200 from ebay.ca for $24 inclusive, got better speed in comparison to SS 5200, ST516 and TPlink 8810.

so for bad/saturated lines i would highly recommend SS 4200.

I thought the ST516 v6 could at least be tweaked to support ADSL2+ Annex M? (3.5mbit upload)

I read in another thread that by default it's turned off but the BCM6338 chip supports it?

Seems like ST516v6 is the best modem to get because of all the tweaking options.
There are no tweaking options on the 516/536v6 family. The various firmware give you better line stability, depending on your conditions, but that is all. Thompson has locked down the firmware.

I've learned from this forum that the 2wire modem can extract a better speed from a poor line than the Speedtouch.
I beg to differ. I have the 2Wire and the Speedtouch 516/536v6 and the 516/536 is superior in my marginal line setting.

Seems like ST516v6 is the best modem to get because of all the tweaking options. Does a modem's characteristics affect the ping times when uploading/downloading at half of maximum capacity?

For example, My 2wire 2700g seems to lag 3-4ms above my cayman 3546 on the same line, even when both modems are idle and I'm just pinging the default gateway.

When I'm uploading @ around 40-50KB/s and start pinging the gateway continuously, I'll get distinct 'pulses' of ping spikes up to ~200ms in a field of ~20ms. My max upload speed is 85KB/s so I'm only using about half capacity.

Is there a modem that can smooth out or eliminate these spikes, or is it just the way PPPoE works and there is nothing that can be done?

Also, are there different revisions of the 516 v6 or are they all the same? Is there a 516 v7 or something better/newer with the same DMT tweaking features?

Thanks

well i am on a "3/0.5 fast" profile as of now

so line quality and/or distance is a factor i guess in my situation

thanks again maxfield

i guess i have to try my luck again with 2wire modem until i get a working one.

However, you should always keep in mind that even if a modem works well with a particular DSL line, you might not get the same result with the same modem.

Different modems behave differently even on the same line. Some can extract a better speed out of a bad line than others.
If you have a good line then the ST516v6 is very good, if you have a poor line then the ST516v6 might not do as well. The 2wire modem should do better with a bad line than the ST516v6.

how would you rate this one in comparison to SpeedTouch 516 v6?
Hard to say, I haven't personally used the Dlink DSL-2320B.
However, the DSL-2320B has official support for ADSL2+ Annex M which increase the upstream from 1 mbps to 3.5 mbps, while the ST516v6 doesn't have official support for Annex M, but which can be enabled through telnet command line. ST516v6 uses Broadcom BCM6338 chip, and this chip supports ADSL2+ Annex M, but this feature is not automatically enabled by default in ST516v6.

ST516v6 should be a good little cheap modem. Can be found for around 60$ online.
Thank you for the detailed answer

I really appreciate it!

NCIX sells it too.

What is the best DSL modem possible?

Is the Efficient Speedstream 5200 a good modem?
There isn't a "best dsl modem". One modem that works great for me, might suck for you, due to line conditions, or the features might be better on one than the other.

I have played with a lot of modems over the years, SS5200 included. There are two popular revisions of the SS5200, one is E240 (older) and E242 (newer). The E242 has a newer ARM7 chipset vs ARM5 in the E240, and it's generally better on marginal lines. Key is to find one with uncrippled firmware.

Picking a modem also depends what degree of tweaking and line diagnostics you want to be able to do. SpeedTouch 516v6 modems are pretty good with that, with the correct firmware and DMT software you can see a lot of info and tweak options without going into the CLI (command line interface) of the modem via telnet.

The 2Wire 2700HG modems are a great deal, they are sold for around $20 refurbished from several retailers, and if you happen to get a working one, they are pretty good on crappy lines, among the best I've seen. They provide decent decent line stats from the web interface, however no DMT capability.

SpeedStream 4200/5200/6520 are ok, provided you obtain one with uncrippled firmware.

I would recommend you stay away from older types, such as Alcatel SpeedTouch Home/Pro, SpeedStream 5260/5360/5660, they use older chipsets from the early days of ADSL, and while they work fine on good lines, they arent great on marginal lines. General rule of thumb, if a modem does not support the newer ADSL2/ADSL2+, don't buy it.
