| More NAV Live Update Oddities Several hours ago, I ran a temp file cleaner on one of my computers. I was amazed that it had 328 MB of temp files. Even more amazing was the fact that all the files belonged to Symantec and/or Norton and they seemed to be definitions.
Normally, I let NAV auto-update. However, I do check up on it every now and then to make sure I show the current definitions. After clearing 328 MB of Norton temp files, I check for dates on this and other computers. All of them show the latest definitions as of 11/21/2007. I run Live Update on all computers running either NAV 2006 or NAV 2007. The computers running NAV 2006 appear to download and install the definitions for 11/22/2007 but that date is not reflected within the program. It shows definitions as of 11/21/2007 and Live Update does not error out.
When I run Live Update on my computers running NAV 2007, I get errors as shown in the attached screenshot. Details from Symantec regarding error LU1846 is here. Following the instructions from the Symantec Knowledge Base article does not prove to resolve the problem.
I decided to update via the Intelligent Updater and it seems to have cleared up the issue for me at least. All computers now show the current date of 11/22/2007.
Has anyone else seen this problem?

| Same problem here. XP, NIS 2007. Noticed that LU setting had switched to Express Mode. I have always had Interactive Mode selected. Found >300 MB of Norton temp files. LU "updates" me to 11/21 defs and get LU1846 error. Funny thing is that I have 1 day remaining on NIS 2007 subscription and NIS 2008 CD in hand. Am pouring a double right now before deciding how to proceed. | |

| Re: More NAV Live Update Oddities I'd say yes, but that's not for me to decide. Symantec must be aware something is seriously wrong as no daily definitions have been released for today the 23rd.
I'm more interested in why I have 7.05 GB in temp files spread over 5 computers running NAV 2007 and another 2 GB on 2 computers running NAV 2006.
Until such time as Symantec figures out what's wrong, I'm just exercising extreme caution when surfing and opening email. -- Alaska Aces 2007-2008 record as of this post: 10-3-1

The s32luhl1.dll file is found usually in your c:\program files\symantec\liveupdate folder. Or, do a search for s32lu*.* in your Windows Explorer search. Rename the s32luhl1.dll file to s32luhl1.old and then try again.
Worked for me Good Luck.

1 edit | NAV/Live Update does keep around previous virus definitions (I guess as a backup in case something goes wrong with the currently loaded ones).
Anyhow, there's an option under Live Update that will restrict the amount of space it uses as it's 'Update Cache' - by default, it's pretty big - the reason why some of you are seeing up to 1GB of space being consumed by old virus defs. Go into the configuration options of Live Update and change the caches size setting under the 'Update Cache' tab and see if it lowers the amount of wasted space used by old virus definition files. I've set mine to 100MB. Also, note the option to clear the cache as well.
Edit: according to the help file, by default LU allocates 5% of the partition size it's installed on as the cache (they really should set it to a fixed size instead of a percentage)...the smallest size you can set is 10MB.

| Re: More NAV Live Update Oddities We had the same problem on over 3000 PCs. 11/21 defintions and the PCs would repeatedly download 4MB to 25MB depending on the SAVCE version of updates. The download goes fine but the installs would fail.
The fix was either a reboot or to stop/start the Symantec Antivirus Service. The next download would go OK.
Ii guess I need to write anpother script to clear some hard drive space.
