Voice based?

That is exactly what we don't need. Yet another reason for more people to yap into their cell phones in public places.

"No, I said ebay.com"
"No ... eeeeeeee bayyyyyy ..."
"Eeeeeee baaaaayyyyyy ...."

Aren't the new phone systems that now require you to announce your intentions to the whole world bad enough?

AMEN!!!

I would bet if the phone companies decide this a service they can make more $$$ on, it'll soon be coming to an idiot near you. People are so adicted to this stupid text BS, I dare say, typing a web address should be no problem at all.

Agreed. Another reason I've never understood voice-dialing. I've had quite a few phones that did it and never found it any easier than speed dialing (and quite a bit more likely to make a mistake when you have a person with multiple numbers that you frequently call).

Most people shouldn't even use the Internet.

I think voice prompting on cell phones has a very promising future and I see Google taking the lead on that. They've already got a voice-prompted 411 directory service, GOOG411, which not only provides a phone number, but can also send an SMS with a URL to a location on Google Maps. They just need better linkage between GOOG411 with the downloadable version of Google Maps on my cell phone, GMM, to sew things up, such as:

•ability to use GOOG411 to add a new destination to my GMM "favorites" on my cell phone with whatever new destination I was asking for

•ability for GMM to send my GPS location to GOOG411, so it can do proximity searching (right now GOOG411 is limited to proximity searches based on city name).

•ability to use Google Maps from my home PC to edit my "favorites" destinations in the GMM app in my cell phone.

•ability for GMM to give me GPS-triggered directions by voice read-out, just like GPS car-dash systems do now.

The above would satisfy 90% of my needs in using a cell phone beyond just voice calling. It frees me up from having to do any real typing on the cell phone and fully leverages the information that I need from the web. Google has all the pieces to this puzzle - it's just a matter of time before they bring it together.

P.S. I typed this using my home PC.

The voice operating software will be outsourced to india or pakastan.

"Hello this is habeeb in paca stan or in dia.

You want to connect to de internet?

Okay so I see your problem you want to connect your phone to the internet?

Okay thank you for calling let me see what I can do so you can connect to the internet.

Thank you for calling do you have a phone to connect to the internet?"

7 hours later and 10meg of web usage and a phone bill of 1,000 dollars.

And you still can't find Google.com
