So is it just me, or is the Westell 6100 flaky?

When I first got DSL at this residence, I had a Westell 2100, about 4 years or so ago. It was rock solid, never dropping unless I pulled the plug on the UPS. It even held up through Hurricane Ivan and Katrina. But the modem belonged to my parents, and they took it with them when they moved out and I bought their house from them.

Thus, Bellsouth sent me not one, but two Westell 6100s. The reason? The first one they sent, every time it rained, or even thundered, the modem would lose sync. They sent a second one, and it did the same thing. I resigned myself to believing something had happened to the line, but since it was an intermittent thing that only happened during a storm, I didn't worry about it too much. This lasted for a year.

I finally went on ebay about a month though and picked up a netopia 3346 on a good deal ($15 shipped). We've since had only two major storms (including this one tonight that I'm posting during) and the netopia has been rock solid, not dropping sync since I hooked it up. The Westell would have definitely dropped by now tonight--the lightning is horrible. But not even a hiccup.

I've heard tell of the 6100s being somewhat flaky on holding sync. Has anyone else noticed this pattern?

Many users (including myself) have had problems with 6100s through thunderstorms. Sync-loss topia when it storms =]

I replaced it with a Netopia 3347-02 and it works like a charm when it storms.

It was definitely rough earlier. I lost sync once, but I blame the fact that my SNR is 5-8 and synced at 3360 kbit (I'm on the edge for 3 meg; heck, I can't even get 3552 )

My wife and I, both our parents, and even my wifes grandparents have all had our Westhells replaced because of storm issues mentioned above with the 6100.

Re: So is it just me, or is the Westell 6100 flaky?

I'm not saying the 6100 is a bad modem; heck, I've even heard reports that it syncs on some VERY marginal lines where-as other modems don't sync at all, but I wish there was a user adjustable setting to "configure" this sensitivity...

That's why I think it's so sensitive to storms.

I was having the exact same problems with the Westell 6100 modem. I replaced it with a Netopia 2241N-006 modem and I have not lost sync one time during bad weather or a thunderstorm. With the Westell 6100, every time a thunderstorm would be within 10 miles of my house, I would lose sync. You would think AT&T would know this and stop sending out the Westell 6100 to new customers. Even when I was having these problems with this modem, tech support would tell me that its not the modem, they would say that it is somewhere in the line. They even sent a tech person out to my house two different times to check my line and they could not find any problems. I think the tech guy was just making something up about me being to far out from the CO and blowing me off because he did not know what the hell he was talking about!

Anyway, I'm 100% sync now with no problems, thanks to AT&T so called tech support!

We get some pretty bad thunderstorm here in Southern Middle TN.

I have never ever lost sync during a thunderstorm. NEVER.

The only time I have ever lost sync is when a city brush truck reached up a little to high and snag the Bellsouth line overhead.

I had that happen before, but that was back before the internet, dial-up and DSL days!

I have the same problem with my Westell 6100 during thunderstorms, but it doesn't bother me that much. It is pretty stable at other times, I have just learned to live with it.

Sound to me your line is causing it, especially because it is intermittent or during storms.

A few years back I had just a pots w/no DSL and everytime it stormed the line would hum and I heard crosstalk from neighbors line. My phone would even ring and it was not my line it was my neighbors.

Good old Copper.

I have no problem with the 6100 or the VersaLink 327W.

They both perform about the same in storms, rain, cold, hot.

Makes no difference. I had problems with one time but it was the line. Swapped the line and problem went away.

You should look into this possibility.

Considering there are 1,000's of 6100 users on the BS network if the 6100's were bad everyone would be complaining everytime it rained, thuderstorm, ect..

Hope you get it worked out.

EDIT: The only thing I heard about the netopia is that if you have line issues it tends to be more of a reliable solid connection if you have a troubled line.

But the Westell should not make a difference at least from what I have experienced. My copper is underground part of the way and arial to the box.

The problem with Copper lines is that its original and who knows how many places along the way to the box you may be tied to old pedistals which can screw up your line (which also happened to me until they removed it and found it. The rusted pedistal connection block was putting a hum on the line and all sorts of noise. )

A common issue is squirrels for the arial cable. Lots of factors to consider and to diagnose.

You will never find a perfect pair.

I still have noise when I talk on one line with DSL but it doesn't effect the DSL connection or speed or quality when I have a storm.

I'm not denying the line is not perfect, as I'm sure if it were a perfect line the Westell would do fine. And as Pashune said, I know that the Westell is supposed to sync very well compared to other modems. However, I have seen people in this forum complaining time and time again that the Westell drops sync during a thunderstorm.

Compared to the 6100, my 2100 and now Netopia 3346 were simply much better able to hold sync during a storm. I agree it's because the line is not perfect, but that doesn't change the fact that the Westell is not performing as well as the others.

I guess it just depends on the person. I haven't had any serious problems with it. But I here the Netopia is a good Modem for problem situations, dependable, reliable.

What ever works best for you.

Re: So is it just me, or is the Westell 6100 flaky?

what i know is that the westell 6100 does get you sync in marginal lines, especially lines where any other modem would not sync up. the netopia's just seem to hold the sync better. but the best is still those old alcatel. they hold and get sync the best...they just couldnt handle the new protocols used now.

Re: So is it just me, or is the Westell 6100 flaky?

There's definitely a difference in how the modem chipsets handle noise on the line. There is some funky intermittent noise on my line that no one seems able to fix, and the ONLY modem I've found that can handle it is the old STH. None of the Westells or 2Wires can hold sync more than a couple of hours at a time, but the STH goes usually 1-2 weeks without a resync. When my last STH dies I think I'm gonna have to move...

There's probably no way I can help you out here, but out of curiosity, where do your stats stand?

Last time I checked was about a year ago. With the STH I sync at 8128/512 with attenuation around 35 and SNR in the 8-10 range. The Westell was about the same with a slightly higher (10-15) SNR. I don't remember what the 2Wires gave me.

Stats are decent, but every now and then something slaps me offline unless I'm using the STH - I'm assuming there's a T1, or some alarm, or something generating noise bursts fairly frequently. I've had decent (and some not so decent) techs out here quite a few times and they pretty much did all they could. They improved my stats quite a bit, but nothing changed the sync loss every couple of hours except plugging in the STH. If not for it, I'd be pretty much screwed.

I also experienced the same issues with the 6100 that you described. I would lose sync whenever our weather consisted of high winds sans rain and lightning. I also had a 2200 from a previous install and switched back to that modem and haven't had nearly the issues with it that I had with the 6100.

Re: So is it just me, or is the Westell 6100 flaky?

My Westell drops out in stormy weather as well. Technician came out and checked it in the early spring. Told me I was on the outer fringe for 6.0 and I should drop back to 3.0.

That's funny, as I have had no more drop outs since we have been in the current drought this summer and fall. Now a storm front is moving through and I am up and down today. I am looking at the Netopia modems on Ebay.

Re: So is it just me, or is the Westell 6100 flaky?

Though there's always a minor chance it may not help, I can safely say with confidence that a Netopia will likely remedy your thunder/sync loss issues...but before you do so...

Does it drop out when it's rainy? Or when it thunders?

If it's the rain, the probably won't help.

If it's the thunder itself, it probably will help out. Look for a 2241N if you can.

I'm in Austell just west of the ATL and my 6100 always goes out in thunderstorms. Not rain, just lightning. I will be looking at getting the Netopia 2241N as well.

My 6100 seems to lose sync when it's:

1) stormy
2) very cold
3) very hot

And sometimes
4) very dark

During the winter it seems I have to power-cycle the modem once a day. I have fiber to the curb (DFITL, the Forgotten Technology)
