| [Help Me] Admit it: DIR-655 has reboot or losing connection pro Okay guys, been on this forum, and am seeing consistency where people are losing either the connection or the DIR-655 is rebooting. Either way, there's a problem, and time for us to share ways of how to address it.
In my case, I'm running V1.10 firmware. I have Comcast for ISP, and I'm not running any torrents, etc. Furthermore, my DIR-655 is vertical in an open-environment where it can't be over-heating.
I'm seeing random "losing connections" both on my wireless laptop and my wired office PC (both sit next to each other). The loss in connection is occuring simultaneously, matter of fact seen it happen twice today. Connection gets automatically restored after 30 sec - 1.5 minutes.
My settings have hardly changed from the default settings other than, I do have WPA-PSK turned on and do have a printer and a server that require static IPs.
The DIR-655 used to work well for me, but after 30-days of ownership, this thing is getting flaky in the "losing connection" that I'm seeing at least once/day if not twice/day.
Agree or disagree? What are the suggestions?

| Well I've had my DIR 655 for about 6 or 7 months on bellsouth (PPOE) and had never needed to reset my router or have any issues with this unit...Now I changed to Comcast about a month ago and about 2 weeks ago it started to act up,I needed to reset the router at least once a day due to lost connection. I upgraded to v1.10 about 2 days ago and so far its been good. | |

New York, NY | When I upgraded mine 655 from 1.05 to 1.10, I started to experience drops in connection while downloading(both wired and wireless). I then upgrade to 1.11EU and everything seems to be good since. Haven't reboot or lose connection. | |

Just my 2 cents... am also a comcast user...south Florida... I would try running with no encryption, if you are, and see if it stabilizes.... I only run NG adapters for wireless, but for the N (Dlink PCI Xtreme N, I got the Atheros drivers as mentioned in a thread here back a couple months now I guess).
Have you tried bypassing the router, in that if your wired PC doesn't drop, then it may help point to the router or if it still drops a wired PC, then it may well be related to your cable modem. There are certainly many posts in the Comcast HSI forum about flaky cable modems causing weird problems...
I am a Beta tester using the Beta v1.11 firmware which is supposedly built off the v1.05 core but is labelled 1.11 but since DLink has released their own 1.11 (EU at least) it is bound to get confusing.

| Well, I have tried many different brands (5) of the wireless g standard routers. So far (4 months and counting) this 655 has been better than all (has not been long enough to compare to the USR). This one is much faster handling torrents,etc. The USR lasted 9 months before it started dropping the wireless. I hope this one lasts longer.

| Agree that it's a great router. I swapped my Linksys WRT-54G, and was thrilled at the performance, settings, features, etc. Get me past these intermittent outages (1-2 times/day), and I'm 100% satisfied.
Okay, will change from WPA-PSK to WEP and see if that helps (not sure why it would considering that the outage is also occuring on the wired OFFICE computer)... May also just live with the 1.10 firmware until a 1.11 american version comes out.
Will keep everyone posted on my progress/results. | |

| Have had the Router for 6 months and I am convinced the problems are not hardware or other NICs software etc. but firmware. Up to and including 1.04 everything 100% (and I've read this in multiple forums in multiple sites). From 1.05 on someone at D-Link missed the boat and its crap. Now loaded 1.11EU and runs like a charm.

@frontiernet.net | Uploaded v1.10 to my router and it started rebooting about every 2 minutes. Back to v1.05 and it's pretty stable.

| I'm sorta wondering why so many are still dealing with this problem...many of us have reported great results using the latest eu version fw for the 655.
If the reason holding you back is due to some potential warranty prob from flashing an eu fw is worth the headache...carry on I guess. | |

I have 3 wired PCs, 1 wireless laptop for playing, 1 wireless laptop to VPN to work for my wife, DNS-323 NAS, 1 network printer and 1 ATT VOIP box connected.
All of the wired connections are connected 10 dlink 8 ports Gigabits switch. My Internet connection is FiOS 15/2.
My wireless is using WPA2-AES encryption. All of the devices were never turned off except 1 laptop for the VPN because my wife took it with her to work whenever she is not working from home. | |

| Okay, as I was the one who started this thread. I owe you my progress/effort on this. Switched to WEP and had the router generate my key.
So far, not seeing loss of the wired and wireless PCs - which was occuring intermittently 1-2 times/day. Still going to monitor the process.
Did have a loss in internet access, but was able to hit the router instantly - blame Comcast likely on that one, d-link reported an IP address (had to renew it) - things stabilized after about 30-sec.
Again, simply went to WEP as suggested, still running V1.10. Will let you know how it goes. | |

| Re: [Help Me] Admit it: DIR-655 has reboot or losing connection I was havig this exact same problem, I got Dlink to RMA me the router, just got my new one today, and the exact same thing is happening. same reboots, i'll try going to wep and seeing if that helps, but thats not really a solution, as part of the reason i bought this router was for Wireless N, which you can't use with WEP. | |

Seems to me that being forced to use WEP is not a good answer to your problem. WEP is limited to .11B and .11G so if you intend to run .11N hardware, you can't run WEP (as it was explained to me by others in this forum).
Just curious...how do your PC's control their wireless adapters ?? Native utility or Windows WZC service ? | |

| I just bought the 655 at c*stco yesterday and spent a fun four hours with it last night. It came with the 1.10 firmware.
1) The install wizard decided the router wasn't on it's supported list, so I had to install manually.
2) When using the wireless connection with WEP or WPA, the router resets about 30 seconds after it's done testing the network performance. I was not able to get around this behavior, making it useless as a wireless router.
When connected only via cable, it seems to be more stable.
I ran a ping -t 192.168.0.1 from the command shell and verified that it would lose the hardware connection any time I turned on a wireless card and connected to the router. I usually had about 10 seconds of connection though.
So far, it has been a very frustrating experience. Without the positive reviews, I wouldn't even consider trying again. But I'll swap it out (and maybe try the EU 1.11 firmware) and see if that helps. | |

| Always glad to see others sharing my frustration.  I share the exact same issues with random disconnects and reconnects 30 seconds to a minute later. I have the DIR-655 in my upstairs office hardwired to my main PC, down in the living room I have their new DAP-1555 media bridge with my PS3 and Directv HR20 hooked up to that, both using wired hookups to the bridge to utilize the bridge's draft n capability. Then I have my laptop on g that I also use in the living room. I have these random disconnects with all three pieces of hardware, and I've tried using the PS3 wirelessly without the bridge and still the same issue. Definnitely seems like DLink has an issue on their hand. I only bought the router from BB 4 weeks ago and I'm hoping DLink releases the new 855 before 1/15 so I can swap the 655 under BB's holiday return policy. After reading all the great reviews about this router, I'm really quite unhappy. Thanks again for all the comments. I'll keep monitoring for solutions. By the way, I'm using WPA 2 Only with AES. Will not go to WEP since I want the N compatibility with the bridge to stream my HDV movies from my upstairs PC to my PS3 using Tversity. | |
