| Is BitTorrent killing my AT&T DSL? I've had my DSL for a year now, started at Pro, went to Elite a couple of months ago, on lightspan RT. I have torred the entire time, using Azureus until recently. I switched to µTorrent with my new laptop (2 weeks ago). Running fine until today.
I have been downing some tors from a private board with no trouble whatsoever for about a week. This afternoon, I added about 10 new ones from TPB. About 20 minutes later, my sync started cycling about once a minute. Reboot modem, same thing. I killed µTor, sync is fine for hours. Start it again, starts to die within 5 minutes. WTF? I enjoy be throttled, but not like this.
So, what to do...switch clients, edit settings or use my 2Wire for target practice? | |

| There is a limit to the number of connections (sessions) the 5100/4100 modems can have open when the modem is making the PPPoE connection. That limiting number (something more than 100) is raised to a higher limit when the modem is bridged. Sorry to be so vague, but no one has pinned down these numbers.
Either limit the number of connections your P2P client is making or switch to bridged or PPP on the computer mode in the modem. I suppose that the 2Wires have similar connection constraints, but even less is known about their limits. | |

You're too greedy and the network is overloaded

| I can't have dsl where i live so i have time warner cable. i have a linksys wrt54g and use utorrent and had similar problems. i followed the firmware upgrade to the linksys listed in the faq and it solved my problem. you might try checking their faq, »utorrent.com/faq.php, to see if any of the issues listed fit your specific problem. | |

| I've run UTorrent across a Speedstream 4100 for the past 2 years with no problem. I have the 5M/1M Elite package. I run as many as 10 torrents at once, with no limits on upload or download.
I did have problems with the Linksys WRT54GS choking and slowing down so I switched to a DLink DIR-655. I've not seen any problems with the DSL circuit itself, just my router.

4100B. There is also a Linksys WRT54GL connected. I've had
to limit my BitTorrent upload to 60 KB/S in order to be able
to browse without trouble.
My older Linksys WRT54G couldn't handle a lot of traffic,
and after torrenting for more than a day or two would begin
to crap out. The usual signs of this happening were pages
that didn't load right.
You should also limit the number of connections that your
client can make per torrent and the number of total
connections as well. Too many can easily overload a router.
The Azureus wiki recommends a maximum of only 2 torrents
for best download speed; I've actually gone as high as 5
with no trouble.

| I am running a Speedstream 5100b (5 light) modem and a Linksys professional VPN router.(4000 series if memory serves, w/ stock firmware flash from factory.) The router has a hard limit of 30 simultaneous inbound/outbound connections. Controlling and hard capping maximum global connections allowed by Azureus took care of the stalling/stuttering issues I had. Everything runs as advertised.
